Filcom back to holding public celebrations of Philippine Independence Day

Posted on 04 June 2023 No comments

It's the first time since 2019 that Independence Day will be celebrated in Chater again

For the first time in four years, the Philippine Independence Day will be celebrated on Chater Road again, and Filipinos are expected to turn up by the thousands to join the festivities and shake off the gloom wrought by the pandemic.

This year’s Kapangyawan Friendship Festival which will commemorate the 124th anniversary of Philippine Independence, will be held next Sunday, June 11.

As in years past, there will be cultural parades and dances, street performances, and a variety show in the afternoon to be topbilled by GMA-7 actor Ruru Madrid and singer Jay Marquez.

The Tultugan Performing Arts of Maasin National Comprehensive High School will also perform during the day-long celebration.

Two days earlier, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee will join Consul General Raly Tejada and Filipino community leaders at the National Day Reception to be held at the Aberdeen Marina Club.

This will also be the first time after a long while that Hong Kong’s top official will join the Philippine Independence Day celebration hosted by the Philippine Consulate General.

In the past several years, the Chief Secretary was often designated as Hong Kong’s representative to the event.

EXTENDED TO JUNE 30!!

However not a single high-ranking official managed to attend the last such reception in 2019 as anti-government protesters laid siege to Pacific Place, nearly trapping guests who gathered at the Conrad which was in the vicinity.

The National Day reception in 2019 was marred by anti-government protests: Here, former
Congen Tony Morales does the customary toast with a representative from the HK government

Also making a comeback this year is the Philippine Independence Day Ball, which will again be held at the Conrad Hotel ballroom on June 10, Saturday.

The formal event co-presented by Ayala Land, First Pacific and Philippine Airlines, will also feature Jay Marquez, a former soloist of The CompanY band; as well as the 2.5 and Jaywalkers bands

Tickets to the Ball are priced at $1,780 each and may be booked by calling telephone number  6183-7919.

Karamihan ng beach sa HK pwedeng languyan

Posted on No comments

Stop sharing stabbing video, CE urges

Posted on 03 June 2023 No comments

CE Lee urged the public to stop sharing the gory videos
and for those disturbed by them to seek help (File photo)

Chief Executive John Lee has urged the public to stop sharing the video of the gory stabbing of two women at Plaza Hollywood in Diamond Hill yesterday, Friday.

In a statement issued early this morning, CE Lee said he was saddened by the murder and extended his condolences to the families of the victims.

“Noting that members of the public may feel uneased and worried, especially as videos of the incident were widely circulated online, I urge everyone in the community to stop sharing the videos, and to extend care to family members and friends,” he said.

“Members of the public are advised to seek professional support if they experience any emotional distress.”

His appeal was echoed by the Committee on Mental Health, an advisory body to the government, which called on the public to stop circulating the video clips and pictures on the incident, and be aware of their own mental health and of those around them.

They are advised to seek assistance from professionals if they need it.

Among those that have offered help is the Social Welfare Department, which said it will provide immediate telephone counselling, support and referral to those disturbed by the widely shared videos and photos of the crime through its 24-hour hotline, 2343 2255.

The SWD has also set up a mobile service counter operated by clinical psychologists near the scene of the incident to provide support for those suffering from emotional distress because of the incident.

The service counter can be found outside Exit C2 of MTR Diamond Hill Station (i.e. the open area at the Public Transport Interchange outside the entrance of Plaza Hollywood). The operation hours will be from 11.45am to 6pm.

Pamphlets on handling emotional distress will also be distributed.

The SWD also said it has reached out to families of the victims and the suspects to help them cope with the tragedy.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

HK Police, meanwhile, dismissed earlier reports that the assailant arrested at the scene was the husband of one of the victims.

They said their initial investigation did not show any link between the victims and the 39-year-old suspect who has a history of mental illness.

In their early-morning media briefing, an officer said, "There is no concrete evidence to support that the suspect has any acquaintance with the two victims."

The police said the suspect first stabbed one of the women repeatedly with a knife, before turning on to her companion who tried, unsuccessfully, to stop the attack.

The officers who arrived at the scene shortly after said they found the two victims, aged 22 and 26, lying in a pool of blood with multiple knife injuries.

They were both declared dead at United Christian Hospital due to massive bleeding.

The suspect is still being held for questioning.

The Police is appealing to anyone who has witnessed the murders to come forward and help with their investigation.
