The prosecution said Corpuz went to the store on the ground floor of Hang Lung Centre on Patterson St at 4:30pm. A female security guard saw her acting suspiciously.

The guard saw the accused take one handbag worth $159 and a pair of ladies’ shoes worth $329 on the first floor of the shop, then put them in a recyclable shopping bag.

Corpuz then left the store without paying, but was stopped by the guard outside. The unpaid items were found in her bag. The case was reported and a police officer who responded arrested her.

In a video recorded interview, the defendant admitted her offense, saying she did it out of greed. She had no previous record.

The defense lawyer said the defendant, who has a child, came to Hong Kong to work as a helper last February but was terminated after just a few months. Failing to find a new employer, she applied for recognizance when her visa extension expired.
