4 variant carriers test positive on arrival in HK

One of the 4 infected patients carried two mutant strains of the coronavirus

Four newly arrived travelers – one from Greece and the three others from Turkey – were reported to have tested positive for Covid-19 with mutant strain on arrival in Hong Kong.

All except an eight-year-old boy who arrived from Turkey had received one dose each of the BioNTech vaccine in the United Kingdom.

All the arrivals from Turkey, which also included a 33-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, were found to carry the L452R mutant strain commonly linked to the Delta variant.

The 20-year-old female passengers from Greece, meanwhile, carried two mutant strains, N501Y and E484K. She was asymptomatic.

The man from Turkey was also asymptomatic, while the woman and the boy developed symptoms on Aug 1.

As four passengers from flight TK083 operated by Turkish Airlines from Istanbul, Turkey tested positive on arrival in Hong Kong, the Department of Health has ordered the flight suspended for two weeks starting tomorrow.

A statement from the Centre for Health Protection said that in the past 14 days, a total of 32 cases had been reported, and all of them are imported cases.
