| Andrada offered no excuse for the thefts when she appeared in Eastern Magistracy |
A 30-year-old Filipina domestic helper has been sentenced to
two months in jail for stealing a total of $9,000 from her employer in Chi Fu
Fa Yuen, Aberdeen
Jilliane Andrada pleaded guilty in Eastern Court
Andrada, who had been working for Cheung since Jan 14, 2017,
first took $4,000 from a locked drawer in the bedroom where the employer kept
her money. Cheung kept the key in another drawer inside the bedroom.
On Jun 10, Andrada again entered Cheung’s bedroom and stole another
$1,500.
She did the same thing on Jun 23, this time taking $3,500.
Cheung told police that on Jun 14 she put $30,000 cash she had
withdrawn in the drawer, but when she checked the money on Jun 23, she noticed some
was missing.
The employer asked her husband if he took the money but he
said no. Cheung then asked the helper and she readily admitted the theft. The
police were called and Andrada was arrested.
During a police interview, the helper confessed stealing
money from her employer’s drawer on three occasions. She even wrote a
confession detailing the dates when she took the money.
Andrada said of the total amount that she had stolen, she remitted
$7,500 to her family and kept $1,500 for herself to buy food.
In mitigation, the defense lawyer said Andrada had just
renewed her employment contract with Cheung in January this year. She was supporting
her parents and a child.
The lawyer asked for leniency, pointing out that the helper
had admitted the charges at the first instance and was remorseful.
Magistrate Peter Law told Andrada her crime was a serious
breach of her employer’s trust committed on three occasions. He imposed a
sentence of two months for each offense, to be served concurrently, after giving
a one-third discount for her guilty plea.
