| Immigration officers escort one of those arrested |
The Immigration Department (ImmD) arrested 12 persons in raids on multiple target locations -- including restaurants, massage parlors and flats under renovation -- during anti-illegal worker operations last week.
The raids were part of Immigration’s territory-wide anti-illegal
worker operations codenamed "Twilight", "Contribute" and
"Lightshadow"; a joint operation with the Labour Department codenamed
"Fastrack"; a joint operation with the Hong Kong Police Force
codenamed "Windsand"; and a joint operation with the Hong Kong Police
Force and Hong Kong Customs, from July 31 to August 6.
Of the 12 suspected illegal workers arrested, 10 were men
and two women, aged 35 to 62.

Among the men one was holding a recognisance form which
prohibits him from taking any employment.
An investigation into the suspected employers is ongoing,
and the possibility of further arrests is not ruled out, ImmD said.
Charges of breach of condition of stay are exected to be
filed against them.
Domestic helpers and visitors are not allowed to take
employment in Hong Kong, whether paid or unpaid, without the permission of the
Director of Immigration. Offenders are liable to prosecution and upon
conviction face a maximum fine of $50,000 and up to two years' imprisonment.

“Aiders and abettors are also liable to prosecution and
penalties," ImmD said.
The prohibition from taking any employment, whether paid or
unpaid, or establishing or joining any business also applies to an illegal
immigrant, a person who is the subject of a removal order or a deportation
order, an overstayer or a person who was refused permission.
“Offenders are liable
upon conviction to a maximum fine of $50,000 and up to three years'
imprisonment,” it added.
“Under section 20(1)(a) of the Immigration Ordinance, the
Chief Executive may make a deportation order against an immigrant, prohibiting
the immigrant from being in Hong Kong at any time thereafter if the immigrant
has been found guilty in Hong Kong of an offence punishable by imprisonment for
not less than two years," The ImmD said.
