| This cocaine haul has a market vaue of $3.6 million |
A 22-year-old Filipina who flew in from Phnom Penh, Cambodia on October 31 was arrested on arrival at the Hong Kong International Airport after 6 kilos of suspected cocaine was found inside her check-in suitcase.
The drugs have an estimated market value of about HK$3.6 million.
A government said the cocaine was discovered after the woman was stopped for customs clearance.
The woman will appear at West Kowloon Magistrates today, Monday, charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug.
The drug route and the kind of drug seized varies from the usual cases involving Filipino tourists arriving in Hong Kong recently. Most of those stopped at HK Airport in recent months had flown in from Bangkok, Thailand, carrying with them several kilos of suspected cannabis or marijuana buds.
Customs says it will continue to step up enforcement against drug trafficking activities using intelligence analysis.
Travelers or residents are strongly advised not to engage in drug trafficking activities for monetary return, as the offence is punished with stiff prison sentences in Hong Kong. They must not carry unknown items for other people, in and out of Hong Kong.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, the maximum penalty for trafficking in drugs is life imprisonment and a fine of HK$5 million.
Any suspected drug trafficking activities should be reported to Customs' 24-hour hotline 182 8080 or its dedicated crime-reporting email account (crimereport@customs.gov.hk) or online form (eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002).
