A group of 14 young enthusiasts from the Philippine Taekwondo Union who flew into Hong Kong to compete, copped third place with 6 gold medals. The members aged 4 to 15 were accompanied by their parents and coach Anthony Angeles.

A total of 17 teams competed in the Taekwondo Kyorugi, Poomsae and Hanmadang 2019 tournament organized by the China Hong Kong National Taekwondo Alliance. Apart from Filipinos and Chinese, there were also Indonesian and Nepalese teams that took part.

One of the big winners for the OFW team was Marites Pepe who topped the 57- 62 kgs. (Kyurogi sparring) category. Winning silver in the pommsae contest was Geraldine Besa, while Judith Viray and Janette Onsat both got bronze.

Coach Crisel said the team’s goal is to teach more OFWs to keep fit and have a healthy lifestyle.

“Martial arts is not only a self defense but (a way of) pushing yourself to know your limit and maximize capabilities, developing confidence, self-discipline and respect,” she said.

She noted minor incidents during the contest like complaints over the scoring of judges that were settled afterwards. One of her players was also injured in an accident, but went on to win her category, anyway.

Part of the action.

Singapore-based Filipinos dominated the Australasian Filipino Bowlers’ Friendship Games 2019 held on Apr 6-7 in Hong Kong by winning the ladies’ singles, ladies’ masters and men’s masters.

But the bowlers from Makati took top honors in the overall team standing.

Hosts Filipino Bowling Club of Hong Kong picked up a gold trophy courtesy of its founder and president Jenny Gafate, who rolled 236 for the ladies’ masters high game.

The Hong Kong-based team reaped thanks and praise for their successful hosting of the event, which this year saw a team from Britain join their fellow Filipinos in the fun.

On their flight back to London, the guys from the UK said the “fun and laughter were remarkable memories to treasure” while the Australia-based bowlers, on their journey back to Melbourne, called it “one helluva event”.

The two-day tournament opened on Apr 6 at Dacos Bowling Centre in Tsuen Wan with Deputy Consul General Germinia Usudan welcoming the various teams.

Former Ambassador to Australia Minda Cruz, who had served as a consul in Hong Kong, set the tone for the tournament by exhorting players to help a charity of their choice through their events such as this.

Responding to her appeal, Gafate said part of the funds raised during the event was donated to the children’s cancer foundation that the retired diplomat was supporting.

FBCHK’s Miko Cabazor, Jimmy Manalo and Jon Suarez added to the hosts’ trophies by finishing second, third and fourth in the men’s masters.

The Makati Thursday Bowlers Club Team 3 and Team 4, playing for the first time in Hong Kong, captured trophies for placing first and fourth in the team event with 112.5 and 25 points, respectively.

Filipino Bowling Club of Singapore Team 8 logged 62.5 points for second place and FBCS Team 12 scored 12.50 points to salvage fifth place.

Jun Orlina took two more gold trophies via his first place finishes in the men’s singles and all-events, while teammate Mark Matias placed fifth in the men’s masters and Manny Laurel took the silver in the all-events.

FBCS, however, had the most copious harvest with gold trophies in the ladies’ singles via a first-place finish by Arlene Midoranda at 56.25 points, and in the ladies’ masters through Josie Isip’s 112.50 points.

The Filipinas from Singapore swept the ladies’ singles with Fay Lugue earning 31.25 points, Josie Isip 18.75, Sani Poseco 12.50 and Aida Rebellon 6.25 on the top five places.

Then Isip, Roselle Martin and Midoranda finished first, second and third in the ladies’ masters. In the all-events, Lugue was the only woman in the top three.

John Kiac added a gold trophy for FBCS by earning 112.50 points in the men’s masters while Ronnie Santos Jr rolled a 252 to win the gold trophy for men’s masters high game.

SCC Divas trumps USRC for second win in T20 league

By Vir B. Lumicao

SCC Divas scored a convincing victory on Mar 24, as Jennifer Alumbro and RomelaOsabeldisplayed fine batting to beat veterans United Services Recreation Club,92-93, in 7 overs in Cricket Hong Kong Women’s T20 League.

The triumph was auspicious for the all-Filipina team, which has just one more game left - against the Caigengrower Cricket Club on Apr 7 - as the T20 League approaches the end of its season.

Josie Arimas, captain of SCC Divas, excitedly relayed the news of their win from the Po Kong Village Road cricket field.

“Ang score nila(USRC) kahapon 92/6 out in 20 overs, tapos nahabol namin in 7 overs only 93/0 no out,” said Arimas.

Alumbrowas named the MVP for having bowled 3 opponents in 1, effectively depriving USRC an opportunity to hit back because its strong batters were dismissed three in a row, Arimas said.

The captain said the match was SCC Divas’ 11th in the league’s 12 matches, two round-robin league format.

“Two wins lang kami pero meron kami mga points sa mga cancelled games kasi umuulan. So, kapag cancelled, makaka-earn kami ng 2 points for each team na nagkansela,” Arimas said.

Call now!

In the 35 overs, the Divas have 3 games because they were postponed when the National Team of Hong Kong went on a tour inThailand.

The Divas’ matches in the 35 overs are scheduled for Apr 14, Apr 21, Apr28. The dates coincide with matches of the Divas, renamed as SCC Pinay in the Women’s Development League, so the Filipinas will be playing both in the morning and afternoon games, Arimas said. She said that situation provided the 28-member team much-needed training.

CALL US!

“We still need training lalo na sa bowling meron naman may nag improve lalo na sa bagong players,” she said.

Arimas said SCC Divas comprised its older players and SCC Pinay, mostly young and new recruits. She said she would boost SCC Pinay with older players to give them a fighting chance.

OFW leads all-Pinay rugby team

Khaz Brizuela takes a selfie as her fellow players limber up.

By Ellen Asis

Like most Filipino migrant women, Khaz Brizuela chose to work in Hong Kong to give a better future for her children. But her work here also gave her an opportunity to improve herself, and discover a passion for rugby, a game not familiar to most Filipinos

In the Philippines, the term rugby is often associated with the chemical solvent that is used as an adhesive, but is often inhaled by drug addicts to give them a quick fix. Thus, whenever Khaz mentions rugby, some of her Filipino friends are bound to joke about its addictive effect.

But the jokes don’t bother Khaz, who now captains Exiles Rugby, a team entirely made up of female domestic workers from the Philippines. She has found fulfillment in the sport, and cannot imagine herself doing anything as intensely in her spare time.

Call us!
The group was formed on Mar 7, 2016, when Tom Walsh, a professional coach from Hong Kong Rugby Union, encouraged nine Filipino domestic workers who volunteer as ambassadors for Enrich, a non-government organization that provides financial education to migrants, to form a team.

Among them was Khaz, who threw herself into the game wholeheartedly that in no time, she became the team captain, and now also plays coach to the girls sometimes.

Exiles Rugby currently has 66 very dedicated members (including 42 who joined only in July last year) who train hard every Sunday, and do not mind the grueling demands of the contact sport.

The all-Filipina rugby team take a break from their grueling practice rounds for a photo.

The team intends to reach out and encourage more migrant women to play rugby and join different friendly tournaments across Hong Kong. This way, it can help integrate migrants into Hong Kong society and provide them with a recreational activity that will help them develop lifelong skills and values like cooperation and teamwork.

Call us now!

For Khaz, the past three years playing rugby taught her to keep her eye on her goals, no matter how distant they may seem. She has learned that there may be bumps along the way, but one has to choose whether to step back, or go head-to-head with the task and emerge bruised yet victorious.

She says the game also taught her that sometimes, admitting defeat is the bravest thing to do because with that admission one can drop the shield of pretense and find the courage to face reality and reach out.

Call us now!

“Each Sunday makes me more eager to help them (members) with the help of my co-captains now, Myra (Tapiceria)  and Celine (Tomugdan), who stepped up after a coaching course last May at Hong Kong Rugby Union in Causeway Bay,” says Khaz.

To date, the Rugby Exiles has played in various tournaments, with the most recent being the All Girls Beach Festival held last Jan. 13 in Discovery Bay. But the biggest event they have joined was the Hong Kong Corporate Sevens held in December last year.

Call now!

Khaz relates that their Sundays are called “Rugby Day” which they spend not just as a team, but as family.

“We laugh, we have fun as we love being with each other,” she says. “So many people (in Hong Kong) think that maids cannot do what ordinary people can do or achieve.”

By just embracing the sport, Khaz and her team have proven these naysayers wrong.
