A chance encounter paved the way for migrant artists group, Guhit Kulay, to take part in the Malayang Kultura art exhibit which opened on May 12 at Nido Asia Gallery on Hollywood Road, Central on May 12.

The show came to life when this writer dropped in on the gallery and said a simple hello to a fellow Filipino there. Jovs Apo, who was then putting together a Philippine week show for Nido Asia, lost no time in extending an invitation to Guhit Kulay to take part in the exhibit which was to be staged in just three weeks.

Guhit Kulay, which was formed by a group of migrant domestic workers who met at a free art workshop at the Philippine Consulate, immediately grabbed the chance to show their works in the prestigious gallery.

Apo, together with his Hong Kong-based colleagues Janice Gonzales and Kate Leanne Reyes, volunteered their time to Nido Asia so the event could materialize. Apo curated the exhibit which focused on the works of Guhit Kulay and other Filipino community organizations.

The show was made possible by the generosity of Nido Asia’s founder, Trevor Lin, who believes that art should be shared freely for all to see and appreciate. He offers his gallery and studio for free to artists who believe in creating art with “no boundaries, just pure love.”

Nido, which comes from the Italian word for “nest,” has two galleries. The first is set up as a “nest”, which is meant to nourish the eggs, a metaphor for arts. The second gallery is called the “tree,” meaning more nests are incubated there.

Lin said Nido has two art galleries, the first art gallery is set up as the “nest” meant to nourish the eggs, a metaphor of arts, and second gallery is called the “tree.” The “tree” gallery meant more nest to be incubated, Lin explained.

He said that in opening his door to everyone he hopes to not only be connected to different cultures through all the people he met, but also to learn more about the world.

Guhit Kulay feels lucky to have found a home where its artists could show their works to a bigger audience, and also have a space for their future workshops. The group has now expanded from photography to embroidery, sewing and design, video editing, jewelry making, upcycling, and now, solar art.

Their works will be on show at Nido Asia everyday until May 26. On May 19, the Malayang Kultura exhibit will also feature Philippine music and face painting as an interactive activity. The shows are open to the public,

Nido Asia is located on 2/F, Lee Wah Mansion, 177 Hollywood Road, Hong Kong, diagonally across Man Mo Temple. To get there, take bus no 26 which stops at the Landmark in Central.

Panalo-talo sa mga artista sa eleksyon

Posted on No comments

Call now!

- JC Parker na dating Viva Hot Babes bilang konsehal ng lone district ng Angeles City;

- Gian Sotto, anak ni Tito Sotto, bilang bise alkalde ng Quezon City, katuwang ni Mayor Joy Belmonte;

“It’s a sad day for the family,” sabi ni JV sa isang panayam.

Penaflor marks her ballot in a cozy room reserved for voters with disabilities

Forty-nine year old cancer survivor Flordeliza Penaflor made her way to the Bayanihan Centre in Kennedy Town at 3:30pm on May 13, less than three hours before the month-long overseas voting in Hong Kong ended.
The emaciated breast cancer victim was one of the more than 1,700 last-minute voters who flocked to the voting center to get their voices heard through their ballot.

Penaflor and about a dozen elderly people, persons with disabilities and others who could not climb the flight of stairs to the polling precincts had taken advantage of the privilege to cast their votes in the cozy waiting room of Bayanihan’s administrative office.
Another beneficiary of the special arrangement was a 56-year-old woman whose legs could hardly carry her weight up the first flight of stairs of the voting center.

They were all there to choose 12 senators and one party-list whose nominees could sit in the House of Representatives if they win enough votes.
Bayanihan administrator Tess Ubamos and the center’s volunteers took turns ushering each physically challenged voter to the waiting room, then contacted the election secretariat so they could be assisted.

In less than 10 minutes, a member of the voter’s designated Special Board of Election inspectors would come down to the waiting room with a light blue folder containing the voter’s ballot. In another 5 or 10 minutes, the voting was over.
The special arrangement was a big relief for Penaflor, a native of Llanera, Nueva Ecija, who had undergone mastectomy on her left breast in Tseung Kwan O Hospital in March 2017 and completed her chemotherapy sessions in December last year.

The childless widow said she was still too weak to climb stairs, as she spent six days in hospital starting last Black Saturday because of a bout of pneumonia that sparked fears cancer cells had spread to her bronchial area. She had to undergo tests to check this, and is still awaiting the results.

Penaflor, who is on her eighth year with her British employer, initially feared she would have to shoulder the cost of her treatment as she had no medical insurance, and knew this was not part of her employer’s obligation to her.

But on the day she was scheduled for an operation, her employer told her she would bear the cost of the treatment.
Penaflor said she will renew her contract, which falls due this year, so that she can continue with her medication.

Hugpong candidates in early sweep of overseas voting in Hong Kong

Consul General Morales (in white shirt) leads the tallying of votes in Bayanihan Centrre
Senatorial candidates of the administration-backed Hugpong ng Pagbabago coalition have taken an overwhelming lead in the initial tally of the votes cast in Hong Kong for the mid-term election in the Philippines.
With about 10% of the votes tallied (or 19 out of a total of 88 SD cards from the vote counting machines) as of 11pm of May 13, Hugpong stalwarts Bong Go, Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, Imee Marcos, Pia Cayetano and Glenn Chong are each shown to have consistently won about 70% of the ballots cast.

Each of these four candidates often garnered around 700 out of the 1,000 possible votes contained in each SD card taken from VCMs in the nine precincts at the Bayanihan voting center.
But all of them could yet be beaten for the top slot by Willie Ong, a doctor who is popular among common folk for the free medical advice he dispenses online. Ong, who was originally in the Hugpong line-up, appears to have won votes from supporters of both the administration and the opposition. For every 1,000 votes counted from each SD card that was tallied initially, Ong often got more than 800.

Ong was among the 15 candidates originally mentioned to have the support of President Rodrigo Duterte, who, however trimmed it down to just 13. Former presidential spokesman Harry Roque quit the race and was dropped from the slate, but no explanation was given as to why Ong was taken off the list.
Apart from Ong, the only other non-Hugpong candidate who could make it to the 12 senatorial slots that are up for grabs is incumbent Grace Poe, who is neck-and neck with administration bets Koko Pimentel and Lito Lapid. Freddie Aguilar is farther down the list, while fellow Hugpong candidate Larry Gadon is well within, at no. 7.

Opposition candidates who make up the Otso Diretso slate are far behind in the race, with top bet Bam Aquino only at no 23, and fellow former senator Mar Roxas at no 25
Even the party-list race, which has traditionally been won by supporters of the Makabayan bloc in Hong Kong, has now been dominated by administration-supported groups. The runaway winner in this election appears to be ACT-CIS, which is closely linked to Tulfo family members who figured in a Php120 million corruption scandal that resulted in Wanda Tulfo-Teo giving up her post as tourism secretary in the Duterte administration.

CALL US NOW!
ACT-CIS has been getting more than 300 votes in each SD cluster, compared with just over 30 for Makabayan’s top drawer, Bayan Muna. Another favorite with voters is Kasosyo Party, which counts among its nominees Mocha Uson, a former social media influencer in the Duterte administration.
Given the slow tally, Consul General Antonio Morales said the final results from Hong Kong won’t be known until about 5am Tuesday.

Labor Attache dela Torre helping man the verification counter on last day of voting
Earlier, more than 1,800 voters cast their ballots on the last day of the month-long overseas voting for Hong Kong-based Filipinos at Bayanihan Center in Kennedy Town.
Voters who were mostly foreign domestic workers, took advantage of the public holiday to seek leave from their employers so they could cast their ballots at the last minute.

Call now!

At the 6pm close of voting, two women rushed up the stairs at Bayanihan to vote. According to Comelec rules, voters who are within 50 meters of the voting center at closing time will still be allowed to vote. The last voter fed her ballot into the vote-counting machine at precisely 6:15pm, after which she was given her ballot receipt to compare, then drop into a designated box.
At 7:30pm, SBEIs from the nine precincts were still printing out the contents of the SD cards in which data from the ballots cast were stored.
The printouts were then delivered to the Bayanihan auditorium, where the Special Board of Canvassers chaired by Congen Morales began tallying the votes.

CALL US

A total of 36,009 voters cast their ballots in this year’s elections, representing 42% of the total 87,441 certified overseas voters in Hong Kong. Morales it was the highest midterm election overseas voting result in Hong Kong on record.
Two persons with disabilities were allowed to vote in the ground floor administrative office of Bayanihan, including a cancer patient.
Among the last to exercise their right to vote were six voters who were registered in other places abroad but were allowed to vote in Hong Kong by the Commission on Elections.
At lunchtime, Labor Attaché Jalilo dela Torre who was helping verify voters’ registration and precinct assignments, said the target tally for the day was 1,000. But by 3pm it became apparent that the target would be overshot, as hundreds came rushing in a last-ditch bid to exercise their right to vote.
