Theft case is being heard in Eastern magisracy

A 33-year-old Filipina domestic helper has been charged in Eastern Court with stealing jewelry from her employer valued at more than $130,000.

Jenny Lou Nualan, single, appeared before Magistrate Bina Chainrai on Oct 3. but was not asked to enter a plea.

The prosecution said Nualan stole a Hermes watch, a bracelet, a pair of diamond earrings and a necklace belonging to her employer Wu Ping-yi between Apr 8, 2018 and Jan 31 this year.
The theft allegedly took place in the house of Wu at Tropicana Court in South Bay, Hong Kong Island.

Found in the helper’s possession were pawnshop receipts for the items, indicating she had hocked them, the prosecution said.

Police are now reportedly trying to recover the stolen items from the pawnshops, said to have been valued initially at $134,100.
A search of Hermes USA’s website showed the price of its ladies watched ranged between US$1,399 to US$70,000.

The prosecution said the maid’s work contract had been terminated. She was granted police bail and is now staying with friends.
Chainrai adjourned the case until Oct 17 at the request of the prosecution to give the police time to complete their investigation and confirm the value of the stolen goods.

The magistrate extended Nualan’s bail and ordered her not to leave Hong Kong, not to go to Macau or the mainland, and report to the police from 6pm to 9pm Monday to Friday.

Filipino tourist jailed 2 years for bogus US$500 billion gold certificates

The legendary Marcos treasure was again cited as the source of a fake US$500 billion bank certificate

A Filipino tourist convicted of trying to pass off a fake gold certificate for US$500 billion as genuine at HSBC a year ago was ordered jailed for two years by a District Court judge today, Oct 2.

David Morano Jr, who was described as a president of a construction company in Davao City, was found guilty of using a false instrument by Judge David Dufton after a trial that lasted six days.

Morano arrived in Hong Kong with a male companion on Oct 28 last year and presented the fake documents to the HSBC headquarters in Central the next day, in an attempt to check their authenticity.

An alert bank staff showed the certificates to her boss, who in turn called the police. The bank manager said the certificates were not printed in the standard layout of HSBC documents and did not have the correct name of the bank.

Morano’s companion disappeared when police arrived and his identity was never known.

Judge Dufton said that had the HSBC staff not detected that the bank instruments were bogus, the bank would have lost a huge amount of money.

Morano claimed that the certificates were given to him by the deposed Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos to fund his own humanitarian projects. But it was not clear why he had kept them for more than three decades since they were issued.
The instruments consisted of an HSBC deposit receipt for US$500 billion gold certificates in the name of Morano supposedly issued by the bank on Jun 12, 1983, four HSBC cards bearing his name and 12 documents certifying he owns the gold certificates.

The judge said the documents were forged letters from the United Nations, the United States government, the IMF-World Bank and other institutions certifying that Morano owned the gold certificates.

Dufton cited that in similar previous convictions for attempts to pass off fake bank instruments as genuine, the sentence was four and a half years.
He said he considered the fact that Morano came to Hong Kong purposely to commit the offense, which involved a huge amount of money, and that he brought with him other forged documents.

The judge said he also considered the convict’s clear record in Hong Kong and his good behavior while in detention. He said he was sentencing him to three years but discounted it by a year.

After the judge left the courtroom, Morano’s counsel told him he should be released by Oct 28 next year, counting the 11 months he has already served in prison.

The reason for the judgment was read to Morano in another courtroom by a Tagalog interpreter before Dufton called the parties to his court,.

In mitigation, Hemmings said Morano was president of a construction company in Davao, a widower who has two daughters aged 11 and 12.

When Dufton asked who was looking after his daughters, the lawyer said they were now in the care of the defendant’s sister.

HK Police urge people to stay off streets as ‘rioting’ continues

The police are appealing to everyone to remain indoors, saying there has been rioting across Hong Kong, with “many people” getting injured as the rioters set fires at various places and damaged property.

The warning, issued just after 7pm today, Oct. 1, came about an hour after police apologized for firing live bullets at protesters, critically injuring an 18-year-old student in Tsuen Wan.

Various reports said the Form Five student was with a group that was using rods and sticks to beat an officer on the ground when another policeman approached and fired at the group with his pistol at point-blank range.

The injured youth was rushed to Princess Margaret Hospital where he was operated on, and will reportedly be transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei for further examination.

The biggest anti-government protests to date was held on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The traditional early-morning celebration of the event was held at the HK Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wanchai without incident.

Leading the Hong Kong celebration was acting Chief Executive Mathew Cheung. Chief Executive Carrie Lam joined the national celebration in Beijing, led by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The anticipated city-wide demonstrations shut down many malls and key stations of the MTR, starting with Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and Admiralty, and as the protests spread, included the entire Tsuen Wan and Ma On Shan lines.

By this evening, 50 of the 91 stations of the MTR had been closed. Many road routes were also blocked, forcing many buses and taxis off the streets.

Throughout the day, protesters armed with molotov cocktails, metal poles and even corrosive liquid, engaged police in pitched battles, who in turn used tear gas, rubber or bean-bag bullets, colored water from fire trucks and now, live rounds of ammunition.
As of 6pm, the Hospital Authority said at least 31 people have been injured in protest-related incidents, with two in critical condition.

The massive protests led thousands of people stranded in several areas, particularly in Tsuen Wan and Tuen Mun.

Many people spent the day relaxing on the beach,
seemingly unmindful of the tension brewing across the city
But for others who chose to stay in relatively peaceful areas like Quarry Bay and further down South, life went on as usual, with many frolicking on the beach and dining in restaurants.

But for the first time in so many years, the throngs of visitors from the Mainland who used to spend the “Golden Weekend” encompassing China’s National Day were nowhere to be seen.
