Only 1 Covid-19 case reported in HK, and it’s imported

Today's lone case is a female student who flew in from the UK on Apr 2, and tested negative initially

Today, Apr 16, marked the second day in a row that not a single locally acquired coronavirus disease or Covid-19, was recorded in Hong Kong.

There was only one case reported by the city’s health officials, and it involved a 19-year-old student who just recently returned from the United Kingdom, and initially tested negative for the virus.

Her case brought HK's total tally to 1,017, with about half of the patients still in hospital.

Yesterday, three cases of residents testing positive after returning from overseas were reported, and no local one.

Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection said today’s patient flew to Hong Kong from London on Apr 2, and tested negative for the virus. But in line with government health protocol she was put under mandatory home quarantine for 14 days.

On Apr 13 she returned home from quarantine and felt a tingling sensation in her throat, but paid no need.

Yesterday, she ran a fever, so she sought treatment at Caritas Hospital where she was tested again for the virus. This time, the result was positive.

There is one suspected case of Covid-19, but the officials said it will not be added to the total tally pending further tests.

Also today, 26 more patients were discharged, leaving 528 confirmed cases still in hospital. Nine are in critical condition, and another nine in serious condition. The death toll stands at 4. All the rest are in stable condition.

Local dengue case reported; officials warn an outbreak could derail Covid-19 work

The first local case of dengue has prompted a warning for people to stay away from mosquitoes

Hong Kong health officials have reported the first local case of dengue fever today, Apr 15, and warn ongoing efforts to combat the spread of Covid-19 could be derailed if attention is diverted to treating patients with another disease.

Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection identified the patient as an 84-year-old man who went to a clinic in Yuen Long on Apr 3 after running a fever. He was tested for Covid-19 on Apr 6 but the result was negative.

On Apr 7 he went to Pok Oi Hospital when the fever did not subside. He was then transferred to Tuen Mun Hospital where his blood sample showed he had dengue, a mosquito-borne disease.

Investigations showed the man did not travel recently, and has been living with his wife in Sung Shan Village in Yuen Long, where he did farm work in a neighbor’s backyard garden.

Chuang said they fear an outbreak because the weather has remained cool for this time of the year, making the spread of dengue more likely to happen.
She said this should not happen “because if we have an outbreak, and on top of that we have Covid, it will be a headache for us.”

This is the 20th case of dengue fever being detected in Hong Kong this year, but all previous cases were imported from different countries, notably the Philippines, which accounted for seven of the cases.

Health officials say it's not likely the newly arrived patients got the virus on the plane
Meanwhile, there has been some good news on the local anti-Covid front. For the first time in more than a month, not a single case of local infection was recorded over the past 24 hours.

But the news is grim elsewhere around the world, with the overall tally of infections from the pandemic passing the two million mark, and deaths rising to almost 130,000.
Cases in the new epicenter, the United States, rose to nearly 610,000 while the death toll exceeded 26,000.

In Hong Kong, all four new cases reported today involved patients with recent travel history. They brought the city’s total tally to 1,016.

But when asked if it was possible the new arrivals caught the virus on the plane, Dr Chuang said she didn’t think so, adding that the cases reflect the situation in the place they had come from, particularly Britain.

“If it came from the plane we would have seen a cluster of cases,” said Chuang. “The patients didn't travel together, they don’t even know each other.”

The new cases include a British permanent resident who caught the virus in his native country and was cleared to return to Hong Kong. But he again tested positive on his arrival in the city on Apr 14.

A 22-year-old student in Britain and a 36-year-old resident in the Netherlands who both tested positive, arrived on the same day. Both showed no symptoms.

The third case was a 60-year-old woman from Morocco.

The new cases marked a fourth straight day of single-digit rise in Hong Kong infections.

A total of 550 patients were still receiving treatment in 14 public hospitals. Ten were in critical condition, eight were listed as serious, and the rest were stable, said Dr Linda Yu from the Hospital Authority.

The city has so far reported four deaths from Covid-19.

UP alumni in HK donate P210k to PGH in Amba Bernie’s memory

Ambassador Bernie's casket is met at the airport by Secretary Locsin (7th from left), his key officials and family members

University of the Philippines alumni in Hong Kong have donated a total of $32,501 (Php210,281) to the medical frontliners at the UP-Philippine General Hospital in Manila in memory of alumna and Ambassador Bernardita Catalla, who passed away in Beirut on Apr 2 due to Covid-19.

The donation was sent today, Apr 15, just as the body of the well-loved diplomat arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila on board a Qatar Air flight from Lebanon, where she was serving as the country’s ambassador when she was stricken, aged 62.

On hand to meet her remains was Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin, Jr. along with his top officials, including the immediate past consul general in Hong Kong, Antonio Morales, as well as members of the ambassador’s family.

A brief ceremony was held at the airport to pay tribute to the late ambassador’s 27 years of service to the country, before her remains were brought to a crematorium in Pasay City.

DFA Assistant Secretary Eduardo Meñez later told reporters that flags at all DFA offices in the Philippines and overseas will be flown at half-mast until Friday in honor of  the late ambassador.

Locsin earlier said he was putting forward a nomination for Gawad Mabini and Sikatuna for Catalla.

Before being posted to Lebanon, Ambassador Bernie, as she was fondly known to many, served as consul general in Hong Kong for three years, from 2014 to 2017.

Consul General Raly Tejada said he, his officers and staff are still grieving over Ambassador Bernie’s sudden death.

“Ambassador Bernie was one of the few public servants that I truly admired. Her legacy especially to the Filipino community in Hong Kong is immeasurable. We lost not only a dedicated and selfless public servant but more importantly, a wonderful and compassionate human being who gave everything in order to improve the lives of Filipinos overseas,” said ConGen Tejada in a tribute to the fallen ambassador.

Consulate staff gathered for a small memorial service for the late diplomat on Apr 8, led by the Chaplain for Filipinos in Hong Kong, Fr. Jay Flandez.

Members of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association in Hong Kong also offered five online masses up until Easter for Ambassador Bernie, who endeared herself to the group by participating actively in their gatherings, including their end-of-year assembly.

But most memorable to many of them was her presence in the first-ever Rambulan friendly games among alumni of four top universities in the Philippines, where she proudly wore UP’s colors, and celebrated with the group when they copped first place.

UPAA-HK president Sherina Erno said it was fitting that a donation was made in her honor to the teaching hospital of the university the diplomat was proud to have attended.

Erno added that it was also an opportune time to give to a cause for which Ambassador Bernie had given up her life, which is to protect Filipinos from the onslaught of the dreaded coronavirus.
Equally important, Erno said, is the UPAA’s desire to give back to the university at a most crucial time.

Remittance slip for UPAA's donation to UP-PGH

UP-PGH has just been designated as a Covid-19 referral hospital, and its medical frontliners have been appealing for donations for personal protective equipment to protect them from the virus.

This comes amid a study that shows the Philippines as having the highest fatality rate among medical workers in the battle against Covid-19, at a disturbing 9.95%. A far second is Indonesia, with 4.90%.

In contrast, Hong Kong has not had a single health worker at the frontline being infected with the disease.

Inadequate PPEs is often pinpointed as the main reason for the high fatality among health workers attending to Covid-19 patients.

Call now!

TRAVEL: Walk in HK woods offers spring of hope

Posted on No comments
By Vir B. Lumicao

The beautiful Tai Tam Reservoir and Country Park is a sanctuary to the weary

Nature seems to be a refuge for mankind during a crisis, no matter whether it is today’s novel coronavirus pandemic, a political conflict or a personal predicament.

Artists retreat into the woods to absorb new elements. Lovers go on long, solitary wilderness walks to harness their emotions and return with a trove of poems. Rebels get lost in the jungles and emerge with a cutting edge.

Although the idea of the woods as a refuge is universal, Confucianism has enshrined it as a basic principle, Ren.
Kongzi or Confucius (551-479 BC), the great philosopher of the Late Spring and Autumn period, considered that all things in nature were the material foundation on which humans lived, so, people should be friendly towards them.

This perhaps explains why Hong Kong has incorporated nature in every aspect of city life.

Vast nature gardens are found in the middle of business districts purposely to provide nearby space for relaxation to players in the city’s highly stressful financial boardrooms or share market.

Finely built nature retreats like Hong Kong Park, Tamar Park, Hong Kong Botanical Garden, Chater Garden and even tiny Cheung Kong Park are just a few steps away from the city’s giant financial houses and are open to everyone, from corporates to migrant domestic workers.

Yet, if one is looking for a real wilderness setting to commune with nature, a walk up Old Peak Road and around Lugard Road fills that need with plenty of green canopies and a magnificent city view to offer.

The jungle, in fact, is literally just in the backyard, no matter where in the city you live.

There's a real jungle beyond Hong Kong's concrete jungles

One of the most popular and accessible jungle treks on Hong Kong Island is the Mt Butler-Mt Parker-Tai Tam complex where a nature lover can design his own hiking route.

For a beginner, one can start at Quarry Bay MTR Exit A for the 8-kilometer Mr Parker-Tai Tam Reservoir walk, an easy concrete jungle road up to the ridge then winds downhill to the upper reservoir dam.

On weekdays, wild boars and their litter wander out of the brush to scavenge for food. But on Apr 10, when the Saturday crowd swelled on a bright day after weeks of bleak and wet weather, the boars that we used to watch on the steep slope below were nowhere in sight.
The paved road splits left towards the peak of Mt Parker or downhill to Tai Tam reservoir and country park. Or one can climb about 600 steps uphill behind the pavilion to the summit of Tai Fung Au and follow the trail on Mt Butler and Jardine’s Lookout to Wong Nai Chung Gap.

From there, one can add another 5km to his hike up Violet Hill and the Sisters Twin Peaks for a breathtaking view of Stanley Peninsula and wait for the sunset on  a view deck near the peak.

Whichever route a hiker chooses, all trails cut through thick vegetation and sedimentary rock formations on lower reaches of the mountains. Be warned that sections on the upper slopes are covered only with rhododendron, cassia or camella shrubs and no canopies, making a summer hike really tough.

In mid-spring though, one is rewarded with a variety of colors of buds, blooms and sprouts and well as brilliant contrasts of old and new leaves. The varied hues offer hope in depressing times such as this.
Beautiful spring blooms offer hope amid the pandemic

One can get so much of nature from the easy walk with lots of picnic and barbecue grounds along the way. Whether one is an artist seeking new ideas, a lover deep in thought or a warrior contemplating strategy and tactics, the route has everything to offer.

But a basic Confucian tenet is: “show love and care for nature in all our dealings with it.”

As Confucius follower Xunzi (Sun Tzu) said: “Respond to it with peace and order, and good fortune will result. Respond to it with disorder, and disaster will follow.

“If the foundations of living are strengthened and are economically used, then Nature cannot bring impoverishment. But if the foundations of living are neglected and used extravagantly, then Nature cannot make the country rich.”
