The man, who was asymptomatic, was the fourth patient to have been found with the virus in the past few days despite receiving two full doses of a Covid-19 vaccine. The vaccines used with the three other patients were Sputnik V, Sinopharm and BioNTech.

The woman from Bangladesh is a domestic helper who arrived on Jul 14 via Qatar Airways flight QR818 from Doha, the CHP said. She was also asymptomatic when she submitted her specimen on the third day of quarantine at Silka Seaview Hotel in Yaumatei.

The two new patients took the number of cases to 11,959 in Hong Kong so far. Yesterday, no new infection, either imported or local, was reported

The CHP said there are about five preliminary positive cases that are being investigated.

Of the total of 17 cases reported in the past 14 days until yesterday, 16 were imported cases and one was an import-related case.

The Hospital Authority said as of 9am today, a total of 29 confirmed patients were being treated in nine public hospitals and the Infection Control Centre in North Lantau. One of them is in serious condition while the remaining 28 are stable.

Tso Kung Tam Waterfalls offer quick access to nature

Rock climbing for the intrepid by Tso Kung Tam Waterfalls

Tucked in an inconspicuous nook where the urban area of Tsuen Wan ends and its mountain range begins, Tso Kung Tam Waterfalls continue to draw visitors.

The tourist site is where young and old nature lovers go for a cool and quiet place to laze around on a weekend. The attraction of the hidden cascade lies in its accessibility.

The shallow pools by the falls provide a venue for group fun

The scenic spot is just a kilometer away from the northwestern end of the MTR Red Line, near the Discovery Park shopping mall that is served by both double-deck buses and green minibuses, yet it is untouched by the rapid urban development of the town.

Its nearness to the shopping centers makes Tso Kung Tam Waterfalls a preferred destination of visitors, hikers and plain picnickers alike. They don’t have to worry about where to pick up food and beverage in case they want to just visit the spot, have a picnic and then leave.

For those who want to stay there until sundown to relax, they can easily replenish their food and drink stock.

It takes only a few hundred meters’ walk to get to the nearest supermarket in a cluster of high-rise buildings that make up Tsuen King Circuit, a residential district on the western bank of the Tso Kung Tam Stream.

Call now!

A visitor does not have to climb a mountain to reach Tso Kung Tam Waterfalls. The walk from the Tsuen Wan MTR station Exit A is only about 20 minutes.

One can take the air-conditioned covered footbridge from the station, go past Tsuen Wan Regional Library to the newly renovated D-Park mall, then descend to street level at the end of the bridge.

From there, take the service road just outside the security fence of the rail yard that ends where a slightly inclined concrete path begins. About 100 meters on, the path leads to the rocky banks of the stream, a risky route as the granite rocks are slippery when wet.

But one can take an alternative route that cuts through brush, weeds and grass.

Party on the rocks is another way to enjoy a trip to the falls

The concrete trail was built in the 1960s when Tso Kung Tam Park was obviously the only nearby nature getaway for Tsuen Wan residents. Now the park’s facilities have long fallen into disrepair.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

At the beginning of the footpath one can see a disused toilet with walls darkened by the elements in the passage of time. There is no working toilet in the area. A few meters away stands a neglected pavilion where concrete benches have toppled long ago.

A little further up the trail, one runs into ruins of former village houses or perhaps noodle shops that catered for visitors in bygone days. They are now overgrown with weeds and shrubs that have also covered what used to be a safe route to the cascade.

Its being in a state of neglect made the periphery of the waterfalls a dumping ground for rubbish by undisciplined picnickers who are too lazy to carry their garbage back to the bus terminal where there are bins.

Even so, the main waterfall and its dark, deep pool remain a magnet to people who want to dip in the cool water.

Not a lot of people visit the falls despite its accesibility

On Saturdays, about 50 to 100 visitors, mostly migrant workers, gather in small groups on their favorite spots atop the shady rocky banks of the stream. On Sundays, the number easily doubles as FDHs find a corner when they can celebrate a birthday or simply gather.

A handful of members of the DWC Help Group, an informal Facebook group of Filipino domestic workers, have a favorite place at the site, a shallow and shady pool where they sit or recline in the water and share food, drinks and stories until dusk.

“We always come here on Saturdays, except when we volunteer for community projects or go elsewhere with the group,” said Rachell Cipriano, an administrator of DWC Help.

“Sometimes we stay here until 7pm or 8pm to optimize our rest before we go back to our employers’ flats,” she said.

On these hot summer days, Tso Kung Tam Park offers a cool, very accessible retreat indeed.

Irate clients of shuttered cargo company to seek Consulate’s help

Posted on No comments

By Daisy CL Mandap

Tiger & Son's shop in North Point remains closed today

Dozens of distraught customers of cargo company Tiger & Son are set to go to the Consulate on Sunday, Jul 18, to ask for help in making the owners of the company held liable for failing to send their boxes to the Philippines.

Tiger & Son Cargo Transportation Service Limited, which was registered in Hong Kong only on Feb 22 this year, appears to have collapsed on the weight of its operational expenses, resulting in its failure to pay its forwarder and maintain its office in the Philippines.

Its promotional offers, including a buy-one, take-one-for-half price and a rebate of up to $110 for on-site packing; and rental for four shops across Hong Kong, must have cut deeply into its earnings, even as the cargo business continues to flourish despite the pandemic.

As a result, the boxes of goods which they had collected from their clients who are mostly foreign domestic workers, had been held up at the company’s warehouse in Laguna, Philippines, or remain piled up in their shops in Hong Kong.

Call now!

Its irate customers say that when they tried to contact the company’s listed number in the Philippines, they were told to pick up the cargo themselves and pay for the cost of transporting them home as well.

Yung nasa warehouse nila April pa daw na pick-up dito,” said one angry customer who contacted The SUN. (Those in their warehouse there were picked up in Hong Kong as early as April).

Another said a relative who called up the company's Philippine office was told that it had closed down as well, and staff there had yet to be paid their salaries.

A flyer lists all of the company's shops and agents across Hong Kong

"Hindi na po namin alam kung nasaan ang mga box namin, three months na. Sabi nasa Laguna daw. Yung may-ari dito hindi na ma contact. Ring lang nang ring ang cell phone nya, ayaw nang sumagot, said another.  (We don't know anymore where our boxes are. They say they're already in Laguna. The owner can't be contacted here anymore. His phone just keeps on ringing and he doesn't pick up. )

"Ang mga shop nila closed nang lahat. Stressed na kami." (All their shops are closed. We're so stressed).

Boxes that are still in Hong Kong but have been paid for are piled up inside the shuttered shops of Tiger & Company originally located in four districts: North Point, Kwai Chung, Tsuen Wan and Hung Hom. Customers who just want them back are also clueless as to how they could pull them out.

Their desperate customers have been staking out the shops, but nobody from the company had been to any of them in the past few days.

Angry customers post notice asking other complainants to meet tomorrow

The company’s Facebook page, which until a few days ago was still in operation, was shut down amid the deluge of complaints and bashings from customers demanding updates on their cargo delivery, or compensation for their losses.

Staff tried to fend off the complaints by posting pictures of newly delivered boxes, and appealed to others who were venting their ire on the social media site to calm down and delete their posts so as to defuse the tension, to no avail.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

The customers say Tiger & Company is owned by a certain Glenn Calalang, who handled the Hong Kong operations along with his partner and other family members. The Philippine operation, which is based in Santa Rosa, Laguna, is said to be run by his brother.

Several telephone numbers listed on its Facebook and webpages are not being answered, or have been disconnected. A mobile number listed in the name of  "Chloe" was answered by a woman who said she no longer worked for the company, and gave another number which however, was not picked up. A customer said it was one of those used by Calalang.

As of Friday, the complainants said they had nowhere to go to ask for help in at least getting back their boxes of goods, the contents of which cost far more than the shipment fee collected by them by the company. They were also in grief over the amount of time and effort they had spent packing them.

A number of them have sent desperate messages to “Tulfo in Action” in hopes of getting media influencer Raffy Tulfo to focus on their plight. Others are preparing to go en masse to the Consulate early on Sunday, hoping to get much-needed help.

Staff at the Consulate's assistance to nationals section say they are aware of the fiasco, and of the customers' plan to file formal complaints with them.

Fake goods owner escaped prison sentence while her overstayer-seller was jailed 15 months

The Filipino-Chinese owner of a shop in Tsim Sha Tsui who confessed to owning the fake branded goods that a Filipina overstayer was caught selling was sentenced today, July 16, in Kowloon City court to 80 hours of community service.

Atilla Quiao Ma, 56, thanked Magistrate Wong Tsz-ho for the sentence, which he said was appropriate after considering the woman’s guilty plea, clear record, remorse and the probation officer’s recommendation.

Filipina says she did not intend to hurt fellow DH in boarding house tiff

The defendant allegedly threw a mug at a fellow DH, accusing her of gossiping

A Filipina domestic helper told the Eastern Court today, Jul 16, that she was shocked upon hearing that somebody was bleeding after she threw a coffee mug on a table during an argument in a boarding house in Siu Sai Wan, Eastern District.

Lilian R., 32, took the witness stand during her trial before Magistrate Peony Wong on a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm on the alleged victim, only identified as “Virgie”.

The prosecution said the spat happened in the afternoon of Jan 9, a Saturday, while eight domestic workers gathered in the hostel.

Lilian gave her testimony in the afternoon, after the court listened to the Virgie and her fellow boarder, Edna, give evidence for the prosecution.

Virgie told the court that she and Edna were having lunch on a table just outside the defendant’s room when she had an argument with some of her fellow boarders over a missing Octopus card.

Virgie said Regidor, who was roused from her nap, joined the squabble and accused her of gossiping about her. She said the defendant then grabbed her coffee mug that was on the table and threw it at her.

Virgie said she moved back but was still hit on the corner of her right eye and on her upper right lip, causing abrasions and bleeding. Two of her teeth wobbled as a result, she said.

Aided by other boarders, she reported to police and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Edna said on the other hand that she was on a video call with her boyfriend and her mother as she ate lunch when Regidor suddenly got out of the room.

Edna said the defendant reached for the mug from behind her, splashed the leftover coffee and slammed the mug on the table before throwing it in Virgie’s direction.

She said the mug hit Virgie on the right side of her face.

Lilian denied taking aim at Virgie. She said that when she heard her name being dragged into the fray, she said she stood up and berated Virgie for talking about her and poking into other people’s lives.

Asked if she was mad at Virgie, Lilian said she “was not angry at her, I was just annoyed”.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

She said as their fight intensified, Virgie cursed and fumed, so two other female boarders tried to pacify Lilian and get her back into the room, one pushing her and the other pulling her.

“Half of my body was in the room and the other half in the living room,” Lilian said. Then she said she grabbed the mug by its rim and threw it on the table.

Lilian said she saw the mug bounce off the table but could not see where it landed because her view was blocked by another boarder who intervened. She said she was shocked when the other women frantically said somebody was bleeding.

“I did not intend from the bottom of my heart to throw the mug at her,” she replied when the prosecutor put it to her that she intended to injure Virgie.

About the alleged injury to the victim’s teeth, the defendant said everyone in the hostel knew they were wobbly even before the spat because the victim had told them about.

The trial will continue on Aug 12, when another boarder gives evidence for the defense.

The magistrate extended Lilian’s bail until then.
