The employer's diamond earrings which Areola had pawned were no longer recovered

A jobless Filipina was jailed for six months today for stealing a pair of diamond earrings valued at $80,000 and $4,000 in cash from her employer in South Horizons, Ap Lei Chau, between Dec 5 last year and September this year.

The defendant, Felomina Areola, 51, pleaded guilty before Eastern Court Magistrate Daniel Tang to one count of theft for taking the jewelry and cash when she was still employed as a domestic worker by the victim, Bonnie Kam, 40.

The prosecution said the employer kept the pair of diamond earrings in her wardrobe inside her bedroom at Flat C, 9/F, Hoi Ning Court in South Horizons sometime last year.

Kam also put stuffed cash totaling $4,000 in banknotes of various denominations into 48 red packets which she kept in a table and her wardrobe inside her bedroom.

On Oct 24, Kam discovered that the money inside the red packets was gone. Then, on Nov 7, she also could not find the earrings in her wardrobe.

The employer confronted Areola on Nov 22 and the helper admitted she had taken the money and the earrings.

On the same day, Kam dismissed the helper, who had been working for the family since January 2018. After some consideration, the employer decided to report the case to the police.

The police launched a search for Areola and found her at Statue Square in Central on Nov 23. She was arrested and taken to the Western Police District Station.

Under caution, the defendant admitted stealing the earrings on Dec 5 last year and hocking them in a pawnshop in Aberdeen on the same day.

Areola admitted stealing only $2,500 from the red packets

As for the $4,000 cash, Areola admitted she had stolen $2,500 from the red packets inside the study and wardrobe between April 2021 and September 2021. The helper also said that she stole the earrings to repay some debts.

The defendant was charged with theft and taken into custody on Nov 23.

The prosecution said police did a pawnshop check and found that Areola had pawned the earrings last December at the Aberdeen pawnshop. They could no longer be recovered.

In mitigation, the duty lawyer who represented Areola appealed for a lenient sentence. He said the helper was forced to steal to pay off debts and send money to her family.

But Tang said stealing from one’s employer inside her own home is a serious offense. He gave Areola a one-third discount for her guilty plea and sent her to prison for six months.

Everyone who enters a restaurant will have to use the app from Dec 9

The government has announced that the use of the LeaveHomeSafe app will be mandatory in all restaurants as well as gyms, cinemas and other regulated premises, starting on Dec 9, a Thursday.

This means that all diners or guests at the venues will no longer be allowed to write down their personal details in lieu of using the contact-tracing app.

The government statement issued tonight, Nov 23, also included an announcement that most existing social distancing measures, including the restriction against group gatherings of more than four people, will be extended for 14 days until Dec 8.

Tempering the announcement was a declaration that cruise ships that offer “trips to nowhere” to local residents will be allowed to operate at 75 percent capacity from the previous 50 percent, starting on Dec 1.

According to the government, the mandatory use of the LeaveHomeSafe app is needed to boost the efficiency and accuracy of its contact tracing and testing, especially in tackling the more transmissible variant strains.

"We will closely liaise with the relevant trades in the coming two weeks to ensure the smooth implementation of the relevant measures,” the statement said.

Cross infection in Regal hotel, 6 new Covid-19 cases reported

3 passengers on Emirates flight from Dubai tested positive for Covid-19 on arrival

Emirates flight EK384 from Dubai and Bangkok has been suspended from flying to Hong Kong for two weeks after three of its passengers who arrived on Nov 21 tested positive on their arrival test. The suspension will last from today, Nov 23, until Dec 6.

The three passengers on EK384 who originated from Pakistan, were among six new confirmed Covid-19 cases reported today.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Earlier, health experts said they found evidence of airborne Covid-19 transmission in Regal Airport Hotel in Chek Lap Kok between two men who stayed in opposite rooms on the fifth floor.

Genomic sequencing showed a 36-year-old man who had flown in from South Africa with the N501Y mutant strain had passed it on to a 62-year-old man from Canada who was diagnosed five days after the first man was confirmed to have the virus.

PRESS FOR DETAILS!

Microbiologist Yuen Kwok-yung said the younger man did not wear surgical masks in his hotel room and sometimes even opened his door without wearing any masks, allowing the coronavirus to get into the corridor, and eventually infecting the older man.

Yuen also noted the first patient mostly wore a valve mask, which he described as “selfish,” as it mainly filtered the air he breathed in, and not what he expelled.

Experts found cross-infection between two guests at Regal Airport Hotel

Meanwhile, the three patients who came via the banned EK384 flight comprised two women, aged 33 and 24, and a six-year-old boy. The older woman and the boy both had the L452R mutant strain while the test result on the other woman was inconclusive.

The three other patients included a 23-year-old man who came from Pakistan on Nov 13 and was on his 8th day in quarantine at Silka Far East Hotel when he tested positive, and a 74-year-old man who flew in from the United States on Nov 19 and spent his quarantine at Best Western Hotel in Sai Ying Pun.

The last was a 27-year-old woman who came from the United Kingdom via VS206 and tested positive on her arrival test on Nov 19. She left for London on Nov 7 after testing negative for Covid-19 in Hong Kong the day before.

As she was in Hong Kong during the incubation period and carried a mutant strain, her residential building, Winning House on Wing Lok Street, Sheung Wan, will be put under compulsory testing notice.

BASAHIN ANG KWENTONG DREAM LOVE

A separate CTN will be issued for the 37th floor of International Commerce Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui, where the woman last went to work on November 3.

The new cases took Hong Kong’s total coronavirus tally to 12,410 confirmed cases and one probable case.

Unified, meaner Fate softball team in bid to regain Bracket A slot

Fate's consolidated team aims to get back to Bracket A league

All-Filipina softball team Fate has returned to the field this season as a single squadron determined to claw its way back into the Bracket A league after being relegated to Bracket B in 2020.

Captain Don Gaborno said this time around, her 16-player team has honed up its skills and built its stamina to prepare for its campaign to regain lost glory.

Fate’s form carried it to Bracket A in 2016, so team owner and manager Law Wai-ho asked Gaborno to form a team in Bracket B where new players could hone their skills.

The two teams consolidated when Fate returned to Bracket B last year after most of its veterans, like former National Team player Ma. Eva Mendez, Liza Algonez, Romela Osabel and several others either retired or shifted to cricket.

Gaborno said the current re-energized team has combined sheer determination and teamwork to win its first two matches in Bracket B so far, with four new players helping the Pinay powerhouse to each victory.

“Four players ang bago. Naipanalo din ang unang dalawang laro at kayang ipanalo dahil sa puspusang training at pursigido lahat. Malakas din ang mga kalaban, four times din kami na zero,” said Gaborno. (We have four new players. We won our first two matches and we can win more because of our intensive training and everyone’s determination. Our rivals were also strong, we could not score four times.)

In upcoming matches, she is counting on her players’ discipline, intensive training and resolve to rise to the challenge posed by Fates’ nine league opponents this season, SCAA-WSC, Satan, Feliz, Deborah, CUHK Phoenix, Red Castle Infinity, Minions, Sirius and Kith.

To get back into Bracket A, Fate has to beat top contenders Sirius, Deborah and SCAA, which have mostly well-trimmed, fleet-footed and youthful varsity players whose advantages include more practice on the field, more time for rest and better nutrition.

In contrast, the all-domestic helper Fate comprises women aged from 27 to 43, worn out by long work hours on weekdays, have insufficient rest and little food. The only day they can devote to training is Sunday, their day off, which incidentally is their game day.

Fate players go early in the morning to the Shek Kip Mei reservoir pitch to practice batting, throwing, catching and tagging to sharpen their offensive and defensive skills. Then they rest for their scheduled match for the day.

Gaborno in action: she wants Fate players to focus on their goal

For Gaborno, admittedly the league’s fastest pitcher, her additional job on Sundays is to train two younger pitchers who she expects to take over when she is unable to pitch.

She has more time to train Fate now as a single squad, unlike when it was made up of two teams from 2016 to 2020.

The decision to consolidate is for practical reasons: it is easier to train and sharpen a single team than two on all aspects; it also cuts maintenance costs.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

On top of these, the merger saves Law some $14,400 in registration fee per team by the year and every season. It reduces uniform and gear expenses as well.

The consolidation also froze recruitment of new players, giving Fate more time to focus on training, said Gaborno, who requires complete attendance in training and matches.

If the coronavirus pandemic had one positive impact, it was the ample time it had given teams like Fate to focus on training while the leagues were still suspended.

PRESS FOR DETAILS!

Fate stopped training for three to four months only when the field was closed, Gaborno said. That time, the weather was cool so the team went hiking and resumed training only when the pitches were reopened, she said.

While many employers barred their helpers from going out on their rest days at the height of the pandemic for fear they would bring home the virus, most of the Fate players were allowed to go out, said Gaborno.

"Alam ng mga amo kasi na lahat ay nasa field lang at nagti-training, wala sa indoors. At pinapaiwas lang ang katulong nila sa pagtambay sa Central na dating umpukan,” she said.

(Employers knew that all the players were on the field training, not indoors. They only wanted their helpers to avoid hanging out at their usual haunts in Central.)

For now, Fate has stopped recruiting new players, but Gaborno said any softball enthusiast who wants to play can join the training at Shek Kip Mei. Maybe, towards the end of the season she will update the community for tryouts some players leave, she said.

Gaborno said even the children of Filipino residents here are welcome to the team, but they must be able to practice with them every Sunday and give softball priority over other activities.

With Fate players now focused on the sport, Gaborno hopes her ultimate goal to lead the team back into Bracket A will happen this season because of the great improvement of her players.

She cited the team’s easy victories in 2021-2022 Bracket B league that began recently. Fate reasserted its dominance by beating Minions, 6-1, on Nov. 7 after vanquishing Chinese team Kith 13-4 on Oct 31.

The first three innings kept Fate on its toes when Minions’ tight defense left the Filipinas no room to score. But Roselle Joy Coloma stole a run in the fourth, giving the team 1-0.

BASAHIN ANG KWENTONG DREAM LOVE

Fate played an equally tight defense, foiling the locals’ bid to score until the sixth inning. The Filipinas added five more scores in the sixth courtesy of Coloma, Chelo Garbo, Maribel Sitchon, Daisy Maano and Editha Hidalgo to end the inning 6-0 for Fate.

Gaborno’s fast balls combined with catcher Sierra Tebia’s tight defense had a big impact when they successfully made nine standing outs in total in the entire game.

Minions were given extended time to play their last inning after the buzzer to make up for the estimated 20-minute time out when Abadilla got injured. The locals got a chance to score through Sin Yon-ying to end the game at 6-1 in favor of Fate.

In their first match on Oct 31, Fate scored six runs in their first inning against Kith via Percy Jayme, Garbo, Roselle Joy Coloma, Maano and Sitchon on their way to a 13-4 finish.

Kith only scored a run by Hui On-ying as it yielded the first inning to Fate 6-1.

In the second inning, the Filipinas made it 9-1. Jayme added a run in the third to lift Fate, 10-1. Then Gaborno, Maano and Ganitano scored again in the fourth.

Kith’s Li Tsz-yon logged a run in the fourth while Pang Way-ting and Hui On-ying made two in the last inning to end the game with Fate up 13-4. Fate now has a 2-0 slate.

DH who suffered seizures after Sinovac jab now faces illegal work charge

By Vir B. Lumicao

Abad shows the ECG electrode patch on her chest while recovering in hospital

A Filipina helper who collapsed and had a seizure on Friday night in the house of her intended new employer reportedly faces prosecution on suspicion of doing illegal work, apart from a hefty hospital bill.

A. Alba said Monday night that her doctor in Queen Mary Hospital had not yet discharged her pending the results of her two CT scan sessions, blood tests and electrocardiogram that were taken earlier today.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

The patient is also worried about her medical bill, after the hospital sent a reminder of the  $5,100 per day hospital stay fee, plus $1,230 emergency fee, the regular charges of public hospitals for non-residents.

Today is her fourth day in hospital, meaning her bill should now amount to $21,630 in total.

Her hospital bill shows a $5,100 per day charge for non-residents

Alba said she had her first Sinovac jab on Thursday and went to her would-be employer’s house the next day. Contrary to regulations, she stayed on and agreed to look after the female employer’s four-month-old baby.

She was taken to the hospital after she lost consciousness in the employer’s house. She said her mouth began to froth and her body, to twitch, and she also lost her eyesight temporarily. She was diagnosed as having suffered a mild stroke.

“It was by coincidence that I was waiting for my visa when I was in her house after my Sinovac vaccination first dose. I had a seizure and they rushed me to the hospital Friday night,” the helper recounted.

“My mouth was frothing and I suffered a mild stroke. Too bad they said they won’t pay my bills here,” Alba said in a post on OFW Help Group’s Facebook page.

In an update to friends, she said the doctors found a blood clot in her head and a hole in her heart during an echo cardiogram, or ECG. She said her heartbeat has yet to normalize, and she is still waiting for the doctor’s final diagnosis.

She said she still has to hear from the employer who signed her up. “My employer hasn’t even followed up on me, doesn’t mind me,” Alba said.

On top of this, the employer reportedly said the police would investigate her suspected breach of immigration rules because she called 999 when the helper collapsed.

“They are saying I would be deported to the Philippines because I am illegally working as helper with them,” Alba said.

CLICK FOR DETAILS

Welfare Officer Virsie Tamayao said the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration could help Alba talk to the hospital social worker for a possible waiver of the hospital bill as the helper has no employer and no visa.

But Tamayao said the would-be employer could not be blamed for backing out because of the breach of immigration rules.

BASAHIN ANG KWENTONG DREAM LOVE

Neither could the employer be obliged to pay Alba's hospital bill as there is no contractual relationship between them yet.

The worker had earlier requested for a pair of sandals, used socks and toiletries because, she said, when she regained consciousness, she was already barefoot.

This afternoon, she thanked members of OFW Help Group for the food, clothing and other items they sent her in response to her appeal.

“To everyone who gave help and their time to deliver the aid to me, my boundless thanks. I received instant help and blessings,” Alba said.
