Posted on 30 January 2022 No comments

"She is sorry for what she has done (nagsisisi siya sa kanyang ginawa)," dagdag ng tagapagtanggol.

Sumagot dito si Chainrai: "She should not support them, should she? (Hindi na niya dapat silang suportahan, hindi ba?)"

Maliban sa hindi pagsang-ayon sa napiling pamumuhay ni Garcia, hinatulan ni Chainrai ito ng multang $1,000, at $2,000 bilang kabayaran sa nasira niya.

120 new cases recorded, including 29 more from Nepal Air flight

The number of infected passengers from Nepal Air's flight on Jan 25 has now reached 65

Health authorities have reported 120 new Covid-19 cases today, Jan 29, the seventh day in a row that the daily tally has been in the triple digits.

Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan from the Centre for Health Protection said the locally acquired cases numbered 86, with 75 of them linked to previous infections.

She also reported 11 more unlinked cases, further fueling fears of several silent transmissions going on, involving both the Omicron and the Delta variants. The number of cases whose sources have yet to be traced has now reached around 50, mostly in Kowloon and the New Territories.

Of today’s cases, 34 were imported, 29 of them newly detected infections from the virus-plagued Nepal Airlines flight RA 405 which arrived in Hong Kong from Kathmandu on Jan 25. A total of 36 passengers from that flight tested positive on arrival, prompting a two-week suspension of that route.

Today’s additional cases were caught during Day 3 of mandatory testing. They raised the total infections from that flight to 65, the highest ever recorded for an arriving passenger airline in Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, new infections have also been found among residents of Kwai Chung Estate, site of the biggest outbreak of the Omicron outbreak in the city. The tally from this cluster has now gone up to 416, involving 210 residential units in 14 housing blocks.

The bulk of the cases came from Yat Kwai House, where 274 residents and staff have been found incted. Next is Ying Kwai House with 92 confirmed cases.

Chuang said they believe this transmission route has already been plugged, as most of the new cases now involve residents who were already in quarantine, after being identified earlier as close contacts of previous patients.

However, she said it is possible that there may still be outbreaks in the estate in the future, so residents may need to be tested again.

The last of the extended lockdowns on three buildings in the estate ended today.

Chuang also reported on two cases that have been classified as possibly import-related, as both work at Hong Kong International Airport.

One is a 24-year-old male who hands out testing bottles and ushers in arriving passengers. He tested positive on Jan 27 but negative two days earlier.

The other is a 54-year-old male washing room attendant. He cleans toilets that are accessible to arriving passengers.

Among the linked cases is a worker at Cape Collinson Crematorium, four students at the Yuen Yuen Institute Secondary School in Tseung Kwan O, two staff at Hong Kong Day restaurant at the Far East Financial Centre in Admiralty, and a person who tested positive for the Delta strain after visiting the Little Boss pet shop in Mong Kok on Jan 16.

Of the 11 unlinked cases, two were found to carry the Delta variant. One lives in Shun Kwong Centre in Wong Tai Sin and the other in Kwun Tong, Sau Ma Ping.

Chuang said eight carried the Omicron variant while one did not produce enough sample for testing. They live in various places like Kwai Fong, Laguna City, To Kwan Wan and Shatin.

Dr Sara Ho, chief manager of the Hospital Authority, said 20 patients had recovered in the past 24 hours, while 891 are still being treated in various infection control centers and public hospitals.

“There are more and more admissions so we now need more manpower,” Dr Ho said.

She appealed to retired health workers to help in the government’s effort to contain the spread of the virus by filling up job vacancies in the public hospital system.

Jobless and penniless, Filipina with late-stage cancer set to fly home Feb 4

Young mother Cyril has difficulty getting out of bed because of her cancer

A Filipina domestic helper whose cervical cancer has deteriorated to stage 4 is set to fly home to her family in San Jose, Antique on Feb 4, after the agency that placed her with her last employer agreed to shoulder the cost of her air ticket and that of an escort.

Cyril S. Galvez, who will be celebrating her 36th birthday on Feb 26, will go home in a wheelchair as she is said to be too weak to even get out of her hospital bed in Queen Elizabeth Hospital. She is also in pain from tumors in her lower back.

Her sister, Mary Grace G. Latorilla, who also works in Hong Kong as a domestic helper, told The SUN her family would have wanted Cyril to go home on a stretcher as she has difficulty sitting down but the fare for that would cost more than $30,000 which they don’t have.

She said she and some of Cyril’s friends have initiated a fundraiser but the money that they managed to raise was just enough for the patient to have some pocket money for her return home. Cyril has two small children, aged 9 and 11, with her partner who is currently unemployed.

Cyril used to hike in her spare time before she was diagnosed with cancer

Initially, they had sought help for Cyril, thinking that they would have to shoulder her air fare, but a timely intervention by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration has resolved the issue.

Welfare Officer Virsie Tamayao informed The SUN that after Cyril’s case was brought to their attention they immediately contacted her last employment agency and they immediately agreed to shoulder the cost of two air tickets.

“The agency has already bought the tickets, including that for the escort. Flight on Feb 4 via Cathay Pacific,” said Tamayao in a text reply.

OWWA also committed to help transport the patient to Hong Kong International Airport, then have her fetched at Ninoy Aquino International Airport for her onward trip to Iloilo City where she will be taken to a hospital.

According to Latorilla, her sister was diagnosed with stage 2 cervical cancer in March last year, and with help and support from her employer then, was able to undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy. “Naging ok siya” she said. (She became ok).

Thinking that she was well enough to continue working and also because she wanted to continue providing for her two children, Cyril signed up with a new employer in September last year.

But the stress of adjusting to a new job apparently caused her cancer not just to return but deteriorate. In October, just a month after she joined her new employer, she was told her cancer had returned.

With her sick leave exhausted, her employer terminated their contract early this month, and booked her return air ticket for Jan 16. Cyril was paid more than $7,000.

Unfortunately, three days before her flight she had to be rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital after she suffered from extreme stomach pain while in a boarding house. The doctor who attended to her said she had to be operated on immediately due to kidney malfunction.

Cyril and Grace share a meal in a boarding house just before she was rushed to hospital

(When we took her to the hospital we asked the doctor why she was in that situation when her cancer was only at stage 2. Why were her organs affected? The doctor checked the computer and said, ‘She’s already at stage 4’)

After her operation, the doctor said she could already go home, but she could not be discharged as she had nowhere to go. Besides, she no longer had an air ticket to use in flying home to the Philippines.

A group of her friends posted an urgent appeal for help, saying Cyril needed to fly home immediately as was her wish. The doctors also reportedly warned them that her condition could deteriorate fast.

Luckily, with OWWA’s help, the air tickets were secured. Latorilla said her sister had hoped to go home earlier, and was in tears when told she had to wait a few more days to go home.

But there is nothing left for them to do now but wait. “Magpapasalamat po ako talaga kung makauwi na siya nang maayos at makita niya ang mga anak nya,” said Latorilla.

(I will be really grateful if she could just go home without a hitch so she could see her children).

Those who wish to donate to Cyril’s needs may send money to Latorilla’s Alipay account, 91558279. Her QR code is here:

HK records 115 new Covid-19 cases

Posted on 28 January 2022 No comments

By Daisy CL Mandap

The infection in Kwai Chung Estate has eased, but new outbreaks are being reported elsewhere (HKFP)

The number of coronavirus cases continues to surge in Hong Kong, with 115 additional confirmed cases being reported today, Jan 28.

Of the total figure, 111 were locally acquired, and four were imported. A majority, or 105 of the local cases were linked, and six are of unknown sources.

According to Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection, the number of untraceable cases has now gone up to between 30 and 40, sparking heightened concern about the many silent transmissions now going on in the community.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

She also said that as of today’s press conference, there were more than 80 preliminary positive cases.

But the infection spread in Kwai Chung Estate has considerably slowed, with only four new confirmed cases reported today, one at Yat Kwai House, and three at Chin Kwai House.

The outbreak in the estate, by far the biggest in the two years of coronavirus spread in Hong Kong, has netted a total of 396 cases so far, affecting 206 residential units.

Meanwhile, the six new unlinked cases involve five Omicron and one Delta infections.

The sole suspected Delta case involves a 70-year-old female retiree who lives in Tsz Ching Estate and the only possible connection the CHP could establish is that she had gone to Choi Wan Shopping Centre where a number of cases have been detected.

The five Omicron cases involve the following:

1)     a 38-year-old man who lives in Tin Shui Wai and works in the catering industry;

2)     a 39-year-old man who works as a delivery staff and lives in Tai Wo Hau Estate in Tai Po

3)     a 65-year-old female retiree who lives in Kwai Fong Estate and had played badminton with friends at Kwai Chung Park.

4)     a 45-year-old man who works as a clerk in the transportation industry and lives at Tai Wo Hau Estate

5)     a 10-year-old girl who studies at Lo Tak School but has not been to school since Jan 10. She spends a lot of time with relatives in Sham Tseng

Covid-19 outbreaks are being reported in various schools

Among the local cases are about nine students at the HKTA The Yuen Yuen Institute School who are in different grades.

Dr Chuang said there were a lot of students there who live in Yat Kwai House, ground zero of the update in Kwai Chung Estate.

Another outbreak has been detected at Christian Nationals Evangelism Commission Lee Yao Memorial School where five students in two classes have tested positive for the virus.

Dr Chuang said this is the first time coronavirus outbreaks have been detected in schools, which started with a student infecting a classmate and teacher at Delia Memorial School (Broadway) in Mei Foo.

She said many of the students caught Covid-19 during examinations so the only explanation is that Omicron is highly infectious.

Dr Lau Ka-hin from the Hospital Authority said 20 patients were discharged from the various public hospitals and treatment facilities in the past 24 hours. As of 9am this morning, 808 other patients are still undergoing treatment and all are stable.

Employers may ask FDHs to further isolate after 14-day quarantine

Posted on No comments

By The SUN

FDHs coming in may stay in DQFs like Regala Skycity for only 14 days from Feb 5

The new government rule that cuts the quarantine period of all travelers arriving from abroad to 14 days starting on Feb 5 will also cover foreign domestic helpers, the Labour Department said in a statement issued today, Jan 28.

Upon completing the 14-day compulsory quarantine at designated facilities, they should undergo the next seven days of self-monitoring and additional compulsory testing at their employer’s residence.

However, employers with concerns about their family situation or the suitability of their house for self-monitoring will be allowed to require their helpers to spend the next seven days at licensed hotels or guesthouses.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Such an arrangement, said the statement, must have the approval of both the employer and the worker.

“However, these licensed hotels or guesthouses must not be serving as DQHs/DQFs (designated quarantine hotels or designated quarantine facilities), so as to prevent cross-infection with people who are still undergoing the 14-day compulsory quarantine,” said the statement.

“FDHs are not allowed to undergo self-monitoring at places which are not the employer's residence apart from licensed hotels or guesthouses.”

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

After leaving the designated quarantine facilities, the helpers who move in with their employers must undergo further compulsory testing on the 16th and 19th day after their arrival in Hong Kong.

As the Standard Employment Contract of FDHs state that they must work and reside in their employer’s residence, the Commissioner for Labour has given consent in principle for the helpers to stay in designated quarantine facilities after completing 14 days of quarantine.

“It is not necessary to make an application to the Labour Department,” said the statement.

It added FDHs are allowed to undergo self-monitoring only at the employer's residence or licensed hotels or guesthouses.

The list of designated quarantine facilities for FDHs who received their vaccination in their home countries can be found by clicking this link: www.fdh.labour.gov.hk

FDHs vaccinated in Hong Kong, Macau, the Mainland or places with stringent regulatory authorities designated by the World Health Organization may stay at any designated quarantine hotels listed here: www.coronavirus.gov.hk/eng/designated-hotel.html

However, the stipulated arrangements do not apply to FDHs coming in from the Philippines as of now as it is among eight countries included in a flight ban imposed by Hong Kong starting on Jan 8. The ban was supposed to last only two weeks, but has now been extended until Feb 18.
