Posted on 10 May 2022 No comments

PRESS FOR DETAILS!

HK hits 65% turnout, with Marcos taking early lead in vote-count

CG Raly Tejada (in suit) presides over canvassing of votes
with Labour Attache Mel Dizon and Deputy Congen Germie Usudan

Overseas voting ended in Hong Kong on Monday with an impressive 65% of the more than 93,000 registered voters turning out amid a raging coronavirus contagion.

The turnout rate is nearly twice as high as the overall figure of about 32.3% for all Philippine overseas posts that the Commission on Elections had reported on the last day of the OV.

According to Consul General Raly Tejada, the last day of voting saw 1,700 people casting their ballots, which pushed the overall tally to around 60,200.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

That’s about 15,000 votes more than that registered in the 2016 presidential election, when 45,561 votes were cast, or about 49% of the total voting population of more than 93,000.

However, the all-time record turnout remains the 66,500 votes cast in the first overseas voting in 2004, when manual voting was still in force. The figure represented 75% of the 89,000 registered voters that year.

Consul Bob Quintin, who has been deputized by Comelec to oversee the overseas voting in Hong Kong, said the near-record tally was “community driven” as it was achieved with the help of volunteers, poll watchers, voters and many other members of the Filipino community.

Dahil sa suporta ninyo kaya natin nakamit ito,” he said of the month-long process. (We achieved this with your support).

He thanked in particular voters who showed discipline and extreme tolerance in queuing up for hours just to be able to cast their ballots under the watchful eye of the police.

Consul Bob Quintin says the 2022 OV was 'a success in all respects'
He also noted that many voters paid heed to the Consulate’s advice to go on weekdays instead of the weekend or during statutory holidays when most Filipino migrant workers are on their days off.

The initial hiccup of having only five vote counting machines on the first week of the election was immediately remedied so that people did not have to wait for a long time just to be able to vote, said Quintin.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

“We addressed that immediately so that no big damage was done,” he said.

The same was true for two VCMs that conked out midway through the vote because after they were replaced, all the machines held up for the rest of the 30-day voting period, according to him.

Poll watchers, volunteers and staff pose for posterity

In line with the Comelec’s directive, polling at Bayanihan was ended at 7pm, to coincide with the cut-off time for similar elections being held across the Philippines.

But as early as 6:30pm Consulate staff and volunteers were already dismantling the green tents that served as temporary shelter for voters lining up inside Bayanihan, just before they were given their precinct assignments.

With just a few minutes to spare before 7pm, a Filipina showed up with her two kids in tow, and officially became the last person to vote in the 2022 overseas vote.

The last voter showed up a few minutes before 7pm, her two children in tow
Then, as soon as the voting was declared over, the Special Board of Canvassers chaired by Congen Tejada was convened at Bayanihan’s community hall to start the process of tallying the votes.

Taking an early lead in the presidential contest was the son of the late dictator and also his namesake, Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., who garnered more than 24,000 of the votes; compared with just over 3,000 for his closest rival, Vice President Leonor Gerona Robredo.

In the vice-presidential race, Mayor Sara Duterte led by an even bigger margin over Senator Francis Pangilinan, who came next.

Marcos’ senatorial candidates also led the vote, with actor Robin Padilla in top place, followed by senator Loren Legarda and TV host Raffy Tulfo in third place.

Health authorities reported 233 new Covid-19 cases on Monday, including a cook who became the 12th patient linked to a Yuen Long restaurant.

Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection said the cook at the Peony Golden Court restaurant had three doses of a vaccine and was asymptomatic.

He last worked on May 5 and developed symptoms three days later. He tested positive on a rapid antigen test.

Chuang said since the patient had been to other places after his last day at work, officials will investigate if he had caught the virus elsewhere.

But she said the CHP is not ruling out more cases connected to the cluster.

Earlier, 11 diners who had breakfast at the restaurant at about the same time on Sunday, May 1, had tested positive for the coronavirus. Most had three jabs, and all had mild or no symptoms.

Chuang said of the 192 diners who had been ordered to undergo testing, 138 had tested negative, while most of the restaurant's staff were still awaiting results.

Of the new cases, 33 were imported and 19 tested positive on arrival at Hong Kong airport and the rest, during quarantine.

Among those who were confirmed on arrival test, five flew in aboard CX845 from New York, three on AC007 from Vancouver, four on LX138 from Zurich, two on EK384 from Dubai and Bangkok, one on TR980 and another on SQ882, both from Singapore, one on QR818 from Doha and two on JL735 from Tokyo.

Meanwhile, the Hospital Authority said an 89-year-old Covid patient died on Sunday. She was not vaccinated.

The death toll from the fifth wave of infections now stands at 9,134.

Overseas voting ends today, with 60k turnout within target

Only a few voters were around when polls closed at 5pm Sunday

Overseas voting for Filipinos abroad ends today, May 9, on the same day that up to 67 million people will also cast their ballots across the Philippines.

Today being a statutory holiday, the Consulate which is administering the vote, expects that enough voters will turn up at the Bayanihan Centre to boost the overall turnout to 60,000.

That would amount to nearly 65% of the total registered voter tally of 93,625 – a staggering figure, given the strict anti-pandemic restrictions currently in place in Hong Kong.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

In 2016, when the last presidential election was held, the turnout reached about 45,000, or 49% of the more than 93,000 registered voters.

The last Sunday of voting yielded an additional 3,300 votes, pushing the tally so far to about 58,500. On Saturday, 1,600 people cast their votes.

Voting has been particularly brisk since Thursday, when dozens of Iglesia ni Cristo followers began casting their ballots after their church leaders in the Philippines released the names of candidates they are supporting.

PRESS FOR DETAILS!

The church known to encourage its members to vote as a bloc, has been instrumental in keeping the voting momentum going in the past few days.

A member said more voters from their church should turn up today, this being a statutory holiday when foreign domestic workers are entitled to take the day off.

Among those who cast their votes on Sunday was Liezel Lao, who was earlier told her name was not in the certified list of voters after she had lined up for hours on Apr 10, the first day of overseas voting.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Luckily she had kept the receipt given her after she registered in August last year, and applied to have her name included.

At about noon yesterday, Lao happily shared a photo of her outside the Bayanihan Centre, saying she had just voted.

Lao managed to cast her vote on her last day-off in the week

According to Consul Bob Quintin who is deputized by the Commission on Elections to oversee the vote in Hong Kong, only a few people had the same problem as Lao this year. However, it took Comelec some time to authorize them to allow the person involved to vote.

He said the most number of complaints came from those who have been delisted for failing to vote in two consecutive elections but are still insisting on being allowed to vote.

On the flipside are former FDWs here who won’t be able to vote today because they did not ask for their registration to be transferred back to their hometown.

Consul Quintin said once delisted, the voter will have to register again during the period indicated. Those who have moved back to the Philippines, on the other hand, should apply to get their registration transferred to near their place of residence so they can resume voting there.

Consul Quintin and some volunteers get ready for the hours-long canvassing
Voting in the Philippines and abroad will end at 7pm today. Immediately after, the Special Board of Canvassers of the Consulate shall convene to receive the election returns from each precinct and to canvass those that have already been received.

As in past elections, poll watchers from the different political parties will gather at Bayanihan to observe the canvassing of votes, and leave only until all the votes have been tallied, a process that ordinarily lasts until the early hours of the next morning.

Presidential race leaders in final showdown as campaign period ends

The Leni-Kiko crowd on Ayala and Makati Ave in Makati, billed as the biggest-ever crowd to attend a political raly.

Candidates for both local and national positions made their respective last appeals for votes in their respective shows of force last night as the campaign period for the May 9 elections in the Philippines drew to a close.

Of the hundreds of “Miting de Abanse” staged nationwide, the nation focused mainly on the two leading presidential campaigns—with the slate led by Vice President Leni Robredo filling two major roads of Makati’s central business district, while the red-clad Uniteam led by former senator and ex-dictator’s son Ferdinand Marcos Jr. occupied a vacant lot surrounded by casino-hotels in Paranaque.

As their respective programs ended, the Robredo campaign estimated its crowd at 780,000, claiming the record for amassing the  biggest crowd in a political rally.

The Marcos group did not issue an official crowd estimate, but one of its senatorial aspirants claimed a crowd of more than one million. It was clear from pictures taken of the event, however, that the venue was half-full, despite people being brought in by hundreds of hired buses.

Both presidential candidates also brought out their families. Of the vice presidential bets, Robredo's running mate Sen. Francis Pangilinan brought his wife Sharon Cuneta, two of their three daughters and son. Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, running mate of Marcos, went on stage alone; the campaign had earlier announced they were expecting her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, to attend so he could endorse her and Marcos’ candidacy that night.

Robredo daughters welcome their mother on stage for her final campaign soeech.

Introduced by daughters Aika, Tricia and Jillian, who also sang a song she composed when she was 13, Robredo urged the audience to celebrate a historic campaign.

Ngayong gabi, buong pagmamalaki nating masasabi (na) nandito ako, kasama ako, tumataya ako.” she said, thanking the thousands nationwide who volunteered, from celebrities who refused talent fees, to youths going house to house to campaign for her ticket.

At sakali mang may mangtangkang agawin ito, pumapalag tayo,” she said.

Robredo also painted a picture of the government she would lead if she is elected.

In his speech, Pangilinan praised the youths for being the heart and soul of the campaign.

He also reminded voters to be more discerning.

And walang pakundangan sa pagsisinungaling.” he said.

Marcos Jr. with wife Liza and their sons Sandro, Simon and Vince.

Marcos -- who was joined on stage by wife Liza Araneta and sons Sandro, Simon and Vince -- reiterated the value of unity, the theme if his speeches during the whole campaign period.

He also warned his supporters to watch out against cheating.

For her part, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte thanked the audience for lending their time.

Maliit na bayan man o malaking siyudad, nakasama namin kayong lahat,” she said.

When the crowd chanted “panalo ka na”, she answered: “Kasi sinabi nyo panalo na, nag-barong ako. Akala ko oath-taking na, eh.”

She reiterated her thanks, saying, “Naramdaman namin ang init ng inyong pagtanggap sa amin. Uniteam, we have proven that a united Philippines is coming very, very soon.
