CHP says there is no sign of a decline in the number of infections

Health officials said Wednesday that they expect Hong Kong’s daily Covid-19 infection tally to reach 2,000 soon, as they reported 1,447 new cases, 124 of them imported.

Speaking at the daily press briefing, Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection said there has been noticeable increase in the number of infections in the past few days, and no sign of a decline.

"We expect the cases will be going up and may exceed 2,000 in the near future,” she said.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

But the CHP expert reiterated there is still no cause for concern as the number of hospital admission, as well as severe cases and deaths, has been stable.

Of the local cases, 583 were confirmed from nucleic acid or PCR tests, while the remaining 740 were verified positive results from rapid antigen tests.

Among the 124 imported cases, 74 were detected at the airport.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

The total infection tally has now exceeded 1.218 million while the death toll has risen to 9,183 after one more case was reported today.

A 64-year-old woman whose lung cancer had spread to her brain and spine succumbed to her illnesses yesterday at 7:30am.

A total of 509 patients are now receiving treatment in public hospitals and medical facilities. Among them, 15 are in critical condition and 10 are in serious condition.

Chuang also said 190 new cases were reported by 165 schools. They involved 159 students and 31 teachers.

Class 4D at Christian & Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Primary School in Ping Shek with 24 students has been suspended for a week after three pupils tested positive for the virus.

Other schools with classes that had already been suspended reported more infections. At St Stephen’s College, three more cases were found in a dormitory where six previous infections were detected in different rooms but on the same floor.

Press for details

At the Districts Business Welfare Association School (FDBWA) Szeto Ho Secondary School in Kwun Tong, class 2C reported two more cases while the basketball team at St. Francis Xavier's College had three more, pushing the total tally to 10.

Meanwhile, a government statement said the abnormal test results of 136 people who had been held at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) yesterday were being investigated.

Testing contractor Sunrise Diagnostic Centre had reported that the outbound travelers tested positive or indeterminate, and were thus not allowed to leave the city.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

However, after the 136 test samples were forwarded to its central laboratory, only three tested positive while nine were indeterminate.

Sunrise Diagnostic said its laboratory at the border port might have been contaminated.

In response, the Department of Health has ordered the service provider to thoroughly disinfect the laboratory and its equipment immediately so it could resume operations today.

But it was also told to conduct a through investigation and submit a full investigation report to the DH within the week.

Brownout sa New Territories, iimbestigahan

Posted on No comments

 The SUN

Press for details

Posted on No comments

Press for details

By The SUN

Govt offices, schools and non-essential businesses have been closed for the mass testing in Macau

Macau ended two days of Covid-19 testing for its more than 600,000 population at noon today, which resulted in 49 new infections being detected through PCR tests.

According to the government website, a total of 49 cases were found, involving 36 women and 13 men, with ages ranging from 8 months to 89 years. Fifteen of them have symptoms while 34 have been classified as asymptomatic.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Officials said the infected people came mainly from two clusters, involving 28 foreign workers and 19 prison staff. The source of their infection has not yet been identified.

Among the cases were five staff members of Hotel Fortuna on Rua de Cantão, and as result, 300 guests and around 80 staff, including casino workers, will be moved to quarantine hotels.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

The hotel has been declared a Red Zone, meaning anyone staying there will not be allowed to leave Macau until a clearance is issued.

The government again allayed concerns over a citywide lockdown, but all schools and non-essential businesses have been closed temporarily, while restaurants can only serve takeaway meals.

Government offices will remain closed until Friday, which should extend until the weekend.

A total of 2,142 cases are being followed up for epidemiological investigations and those deemed as close contacts will be sent for quarantine at Pousada Marina Infante or Sheraton Grand Macao.

Press for details

Those who tested negative on the PCR tests are being urged to self-test tomorrow using rapid antigen test kits.

Meanwhile, the number of infections in Hong Kong eased slightly today, with a total of 1,198 being found, including 122 brought in from abroad.

They took the overall infection figure from the fifth wave to more than 1.21 million.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Among the imported cases, 69 were detected at the airport, 42 at quarantine hotels, and the rest tested positive after ending their seven-day quarantine.

No death was reported, so the tally remains at 9,183.

Health officials said 144 schools reported 177 infections, involving 143 students and 34 teachers.

Two secondary schools have been told to suspend classes for a week after outbreaks were detected.

These are Szeto Ho Secondary School in Kwun Tong where four cases were found in class 2C; and St Francis Xavier’s School in Tsuen Wan where 10 students and a teacher who took part in basketball and boxing activities have come down with the virus.

A total of 509 patients are still confined in public hospitals and treatment facilities. Among them 14 are in critical condition and 11 are seriously ill.

Rey Vital, SIKAP's president for 38 years, dies of cancer

Posted on No comments

By Daisy CL Mandap

Rey Vital kept SIKAP intact, strong and relevant for nearly 38 years

One of the most-loved Filipino community leaders in Hong Kong passed away yesterday, Jun 20, after a long bout with cancer.

Rey Vital, known to many in the community as the founder and leader of SIKAP (Samahan ng mga Nagkakaisang Pilipino), the oldest migrant workers’ group in Hong Kong, died less than two months after returning home to his hometown of Sta Ana, Pampanga.

He was 65.

He is survived by his wife Amy, a fellow migrant worker who worked with him in the same household in Hong Kong for decades; and their son, Reyniel, who was born in the city and is now a permanent resident here.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Unknown to many except for SIKAP members and some close friends, Rey had struggled with colorectal cancer for years, and had been through several rounds of treatment in Hong Kong hospitals.

But in-between his treatments, Rey always went back to driving for his employer, and when he was off, would go early to the Wanchai Tennis Court to book hard-to-come-by courts for his friends and fellow SIKAP members.

On Apr 25, he met with his SIKAP buddies at the Wong Nai Chung tennis grounds to say goodbye and for the first time since 1984, relinquished the group’s leadership to his longtime friend, Ben Bataller.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

As he boarded the plane on his final return home on May 1, Rey told The SUN that his doctors had told him that they had done all they could for him. He was given three months to live.

Rey is survived by his wife Amy and their son, Reyniel

But ever energetic and feisty, he did not let the dire prognosis stop him from doing what he loved the most - which was tennis, and tennis coaching.

Fifteen days before he was rushed to hospital where he breathed his last, Rey was back in court for the first tennis clinic in his name co-organized by his friend and kabalen, actor Allen Dizon.

Though looking noticeably thinner and frail, Rey could be seen in photos taken at the event intently giving pointers to the young participants, and even standing up to throw them balls and correct their stance.

PRESS FOR DETAILS!

Dizon was to post after being told of Rey's death: "You will be missed, koy (short for koya, or brother). Dakal sa salamat, koy." (Thank you very much, brother).

Eight days after the tennis clinic, a visit by some of his best friends from SIKAP who are now all back in the Philippines, reportedly left Rey teary eyed. He was so beside himself with joy that he ordered them the best Pampango dish he could get at short notice, and even arranged a visit at a nearby park near Mt Arayat.

This was vintage Rey, always generous, both with his time and resources, and always making sure people around him were well-fed and comfortable.

One of his visitors was Jo Campos, who along with three other ex-migrant workers who used to be with SIKAP, were known to be especially close to Rey.

Press for details

Jo said Rey again reminded her how happy and proud he was to have been proved right about her writing skills. It was Rey who got Jo to write about their group’s events for  The SUN, not because he wanted the publicity but more to push her to write more regularly.

O di ba, hindi tayo napahiya?” Rey again remembered to tell Jo. (So, you did not me embarass me after all).

Remembering that visit, Jo said in a Facebook post Monday, “Last year, a day before my birthday I lost my sister. Today, a day after my birthday, I lost my bff Kuya Rey Vital. He was an inspiration to many. A kind hearted and selfless leader who untiringly shares his knowledge in tennis, and to be a better person.

“He once told me that I will be a better writer than a tennis player. It was true. (But I still learned to play tennis as much as I could). He introduced me to the editor and publisher of The SUN who took me under their wings and trained. (Later) he would sometimes tease me, saying ‘parang nagsisisi ako na pinakilala kita sa The SUN kasi hindi mo na ako naalala puntahan dito sa SIKAP.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

“Rest well in the arms of our creator. I love you, bff.”

Another member of the group that came to be known as SIKAP’s Fab Four, Liza Cortes, wrote: “I am grateful to have been one of Kuya Rey’s friends in life…a father figure, a mentor in tennis, my closest confidant.

“You were so beautiful inside-out. Death snatched you away from us who love you, and we could only watch helplessly. Someone who is so kind and selfless like you could have stayed a little bit longer…I wish you never had to leave this early.”

This visit by Jo, Liza, Jen and Weng from SIKAP left Rey in tears

Another of his dear friends is Lester Esquilona, who has just been elected as vice-president of SIKAP.

Lester wrote: “Rey Vital is my kuya, my best friend, mentor and coach. Most of all, he was a very good leader of one of the oldest Filipino community organizations here in Hong Kong.”

Ben Bataller, who takes over the helm at SIKAP, was one of the pioneers of SIKAP, and had been with Rey throughout all its ups and downs. He said: “SIKAP was born through the hard work of Rey Vital. Rey was an excellent leader who was well-liked. He was one of a kind and worked towards the good of everyone. We have survived this long as an organization because of him.

“We the SIKAP family are mourning the loss of our great leader. Kuyang, we will miss you a lot. As the new president of SIKAP, I am asking our members around the world to offer a prayer for our late leader. Pare, may you rest in peace.”

Equally poignant was a post from Baba Gozum, a longtime resident and Rey's kabalen who has now resettled back in the Philippines.

He wrote: “Dear Koyang Rey, you took me under your wings like a little brother and made my initial stint in Hong Kong bearable.

I grieve with the thought that another beautiful soul is now gone, but at the same time, a piece of me silently shouts in glee for another angel will be welcomed in heaven.

We will be praying for you as you also pray for Ate Amy, Reyniel and the countless OFWs whose lives you’ve touched, when you’re up there.

Farewell, Koyang. You will be missed. Rest easy.”

A memorial mass in Rey’s honor will be said by Fr Jay Flandez, chaplain for Filipinos, at St Joseph’s Church on Garden Road, Central this Sunday, Jun 26, at 1pm. Please help us celebrate his life.

We’re ready in case of further surge in Covid cases, says HA

Dr Sara Ho says public hospitals are ready to take in more patients if necessary

The Hospital Authority said on Monday that the increase in the number of Covid-19  infections has not been significant, but it is not letting its guard down.

The statement came as the Centre for Health Protection reported 1,327 new Covid-19 cases, the sixth consecutive day when the tally breached the four-digit mark.

HA’s chief manager, Dr Sara Ho said during the daily briefing that although there has been no surge in the demand for intensive care, public hospitals are ready to admit thousands new patients if necessary.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

“In the past two weeks, we've seen a small rising trend in the number of infections. That's why we directed our clusters to be prepared. In the event the Covid situation becomes severe, we can have our beds waiting for patients,” Ho said.

She reiterated the advice for people to avoid large gatherings to prevent more community transmissions.

Meanwhile, CHP’s Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan said 408 new cases were reported by 289 schools, but this was a cumulative number from Friday afternoon until this morning.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

She dismissed suggestions the virus is spreading more rapidly in schools.

"There's no spread of cases throughout schools. You can imagine, although we have several hundreds infections from schools, but only 100 or so came from Monday morning," Chuang said.

Nevertheless, she said certain classes in six schools will be suspended for a week after at least three cases were found in each of them.

Among these schools were Tsuen Wan Catholic Primary School, St Stephen’s College in the Southern District, S.K.H. St Benedict’s School in Choi Hung, Wycombe Abbey School, CCC Kei Wan Primary School in Aldrich Bay and HKFYG Lee Shau Kee College.

"In total, around 800,000 students and teachers get tested every day, but only six schools have classes that need to be suspended,” she said.

She added that officials are investigating an outbreak at an elderly home in Ngau Tau Kok, where five residents have been found infected. More than 40 close contacts have been sent to quarantine.

Press for details

Another four cases from three care homes for the elderly were reported today. Three of them had one case each, while one had one resident and one staff testing positive.

Among today’s 1,186 locally transmitted cases, 435 were confirmed via PCR tests and 751 were verified rapid test results.

The remaining 141 cases were brought in from overseas - 72 were detected at the airport, 46 at quarantine hotels and 27 post-isolation.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

The total tally from the fifth wave has now exceeded 1.215 million.

One Covid-related death was reported, raising the tally to 9,183. The patient was a 53-year-old man with colorectal cancer.
