Press for details

Man dies of malaria while in quarantine

Malaria is a potentially deadly disease transmitted by an infected female Anopheline mosquito

The Centre for Health Protection said in a press statement issued tonight, Aug 4, that it is is investigating the case of a 52-year-old man who died of malaria while in quarantine.

The deceased was said to be one of 30 men aged 25 to 57 who arrived from Africa from Jul 1 to Aug 1 and were found to carry the malaria parasite. Among them, 21 had come from Guinea, Africa.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

The remaining 29 were all sent to hospital from their quarantine hotel after being found to have been stricken with malaria. Ten have already been discharged after treatment while four are in intensive care in serious condition, and 15 are in stable condition.

The CHP said it has observed an upward trend in the number of imported cases of malaria, which all involved persons coming from Africa.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

It has urged the public to maintain strict environmental hygiene, mosquito control and personal protective measures both locally and during travel.

Meantime, those who traveled with the infected persons have been put under medical surveillance. Symptomatic patients will be sent to hospital while blood tests will be offered to those who are asymptomatic. Those who test positive would be sent to hospital for treatment.

Malaria is a communicable disease transmitted through Plasmodium parasites carried by an infected female Anopheline mosquito. When the mosquito bites a malaria patient, the mosquito becomes infected, and will pass on the disease when it bites another person.

The types of mosquitoes that are known to transmit malaria have not been found in Hong Kong in the past 10 years, so the Department of Health believes the risk of local transmission of the disease is extremely low.

But since imported malaria cases were found at quarantine hotels, the DH would step up anti-morquito work in places where there is infestation.

The CHP advised the public to be vigilant when they travel to malaria-endemic areas in Africa and Southeast Asian regions. They should use insect repellants with DEET both during travel and for 14 days after returning to Hong Kong.

The common symptoms of malaria include fever, chills, headache, muscle pain and weakness, cough, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Severe malaria is serious and potentially fatal without proper treatment.

Members of the public are reminded to make reports to government departments via the hotline 1823 if mosquito problems are detected, and may visit these pages for more information: the malaria page of the CHP, the latest Travel Health Newstips for using insect repellents, the CHP Facebook Page and YouTube Channel, and the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department's Guidebook on Control and Prevention of Mosquito Breeding.

Filipina DH goes home with $300k farewell gift from employers

Posted on No comments

By Daisy CL Mandap

Maila is all smiles on her last Sunday off with her friends

Hers is a truly “sana all” (wish it was for everyone) kind of story.

When Maila Jean T. Tampipi, 33, went home for good to her hometown in Misamis Oriental in Northern Mindanao last week, she brought with her not just beautiful memories of Hong Kong, but also a windfall from the very generous family she had served for nearly eight years.

The comely domestic worker was all smiles when she told a gathering of friends on Jul 24, her last Sunday in Hong Kong, how surprised she was when she learned that although her contract had been prematurely terminated, she was going home with $300,000 in farewell gift from the mega-rich family she had worked for.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Heto na ang milyonarya,” (Here comes our millionaire) quipped one of her friends, and it was true. With the HK dollar currently pegged at one to around seven Philippine pesos, Maila’s $300,000 translates to well over Php2 million.

Maila came to Hong Kong in late 2014, after she was referred to her Hong Kong employers by an equally generous Filipino family in Ozamis City that had sent her through nursing school. At that time, she had already gotten married and had a young daughter.

She began working for the eldest daughter in the family in Deepwater Bay, then moved  to her parents’ residence in the same compound. After two contracts, she was asked to move to the Mid-Levels flat of the youngest daughter, who is single and is her age.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Maila  said that throughout her stay with them, the family had been very generous, not just to her, but to all members of their household staff.

For each year that she worked for the family, Maila received an extra $1,000, so by the time she left she was already earning $9,000 a month.

On top of this, she was given interest-free housing loans that she managed to build two houses- one for her family and another for her parents – while she was in their employ.

Not only this. One of Maila’s friends said that each time the household staff took a home leave, they were each given US$2,000 in pocket money.

But friction reportedly cropped up late last year between Maila and her young employer over days off. A friend of Maila said the employer was irked when the helper began leaving early on her rest day and would return late, which was unlike what she used to do.

Despite this, Maila was said to have been taken aback in early July when while on vacation, her employer informed her through an office staff that she was terminating their contract.

She can now look forward to finally settling down with her family

But the Filipina’s initial disappointment quickly vanished when she learned how much she was going to get from her employer as a parting gift.

After all the payment she was entitled to, including long service pay, one month salary in lieu of notice, unspent annual leave, were added up, the amount came to $70,000. The employer decided to top this up to make it $100,000 even.

Press for details

But Maila was even more elated when the family’s patriarch, an elderly Malaysian Chinese known as one of Hong Kong’s richest moguls, sent word through his secretary that he was giving Maila extra money.

Still, she was stumped when told that the extra money was $200,000, or double what had already been given her.

(He told me before that he would give me money when I leave, but I did not expect it to be this much).

Maila said she had no plans yet on what she would do with the cash bonanza that she was bringing home with her, but for sure, it would greatly help her and her husband build a more secure future for themselves and their daughter.

A kid under 3 gets a Sinovac jab as Civil Service Secretary Ingrid Yeung looks on

Hong Kong posted a Covid caseload of 5,020 on Thursday, the highest number posted since Apr 1, when the Omicron-fueled outbreak began to ease.

The new cases included 247 that were imported, according to Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection.

Three related deaths were recorded, raising the total fatality toll in the fifth wave to 9,314.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Dr Lau Ka-hin of the Hospital Authority said the deceased involved two men and one woman aged 76 to 94. Only one of them had received three vaccine doses.

Lau also reported an outbreak at the tuberculosis and chest ward at TWGHS Wong Tai Sin Hospital which was detected following a compassionate visit by  a relative to a 94-year-old female patient on Aug. 2.

The visitor tested negative on a rapid antigen test before getting into the hospital, but returned a positive result on a PCR test yesterday. The hospital later found that the 94-year-old woman and three other female patients in the ward were also infected.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

After the elderly patient died this morning, the case was referred to the Coroner for follow-up investigation. Her death will be added to tomorrow’s tally.

Lau said authorities are still investigating if the three cases were linked and if they were, how the transmission occurred.

CHP said four elderly homes and two care centers for the disabled also reported new infections.

As of this morning, 367 positive cases from 286 schools were reported, involving 300 students and 67 teachers and staff members.

Three schools will suspend a class each for a week after two or more students had come down with the virus.

An additional 172 Covid patients were admitted to public hospitals in the past 24 hours, raising the number of those receiving treatment to 1,515.

Among them, 27 are in critical condition, including seven in intensive care, while 19 are in serious condition.

Those under 3 get their jabs in kid-friendly rooms like this one in Kwun Tong

Chuang said that as of noon today, 92 children under three had received the Sinovac jab, as the vaccination program for kids from six months to three years old opened.

She said children who had been infected could receive their first jab one month after recovery. Those who are three years old and above who caught the virus after their first jab could get the next one in three months.

Parents or guardians can make appointments for children to receive the Sinovac vaccine at community vaccination centres or designated general out-patient clinics of the Hospital Authority through the online booking system (booking.covidvaccine.gov.hk).

Parents can also opt to make a reservation for a free Sinovac vaccination for their children through the more than 1,000 private doctors or clinics that participate in the Covid-19 Vaccination Programme.

Parents are required to present the original copy of their children's birth certificate and bring along a consent form signed by the parents on the date of vaccination of the children. The consent form can be downloaded from the designated website of the Vaccination Programme (www.covidvaccine.gov.hk/pdf/Consent_Form_for_COVID19_Vaccination_ENG.pdf).

Children must be accompanied by their parents or guardians when receiving vaccination.

The color health code system will pave the way for cutting hotel quarantine

Health Secretary Lo Chung-mau said Wednesday that test runs for Hong Kong’s two-color health code system are underway, and authorities will soon announce its launch.

Under this system, all arriving travelers who test negative at the Hong Kong airport will be given a yellow code to cut their hotel quarantine, possibly to either four or five days.

But in his statement today, Lo said the yellow code will also cover close contacts of Covid-19 patients.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

The infected patients themselves will be given a red code to ensure they do not leave their homes or place of isolation.

The coding system will be tied to the LeaveHomeSafe contact tracing app to effectively screen out infected residents and those who should get the yellow code which restricts their access to certain premises.

Lo again stressed that the color code will allow those not infected more freedom to go around, while keeping Hong Kong’s adherence to preventing the importation of cases.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Health Protection an additional 4,547 cases, of which 226 were imported.

Among the imported cases, 118 were detected at the airport, 68 during hotel quarantine and 40 post-isolation.

The patients came from 41 countries, including the United Kingdom which accounted for 43 cases; India with 31, the Philippines with 23, United States with 17, Singapore with 16 and Thailand with 12.

Four more Covid patients died, involving three males and one female, aged 84 to 89 years old, taking the fatality toll to 9,331.

Press for details

According to Dr Lau Ka-hin of the Hospital Authority, the 89-year-old woman female patient was found collapsed at home and was certified dead at the hospital. Tests showed she was infected with the coronavirus.

Three days before her death she developed a fever and started to feel unwell, but she was not taken for medical consultation or tested for the virus. She had chronic illnesses, including stroke and breast cancer.

Lau again reminded everyone, especially the elderly, to get tested as soon as they start feeling unwell.

At the same time they should consult with a doctor, either in person or online, to prevent serious complications, even death.

As of this morning, another 164 Covid patients had been admitted to public hospitals, raising the number of those receiving treatment to 1,533.

Among them, 20 are in critical condition, including six in intensive care units; and 24 are in serious condition.

Lau said about 40 to 50 non-Covid patients had been transferred to private hospitals for treatment as part of the strategy to free up more beds for those who are infected with the virus.

He said 13 private hospitals will be providing 364 beds for non-Covid patients, and the transfer of patients from public hospitals will be made on a per-need basis.
