58 new arrivals being treated for malaria after 30 added yesterday

Posted on 06 August 2022 No comments

Government doctors say the new malaria patients all recently arrived from Africa

Health officials say 30 more people who had flown in from Africa recently have tested preliminary positive for malaria, and are now undergoing treatment at public hospitals.

They took to 58 the number of people who are being treated in hospitals for the mosquito-borne disease after recently arriving in Hong Kong, en route to the mainland. They comprise 56 men and 2 women aged between 25 and 56 years old.

Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection said one of the patients is critically ill and is intensive care, while two others are in serious condition. The rest are stable.

Two others died earlier, one in a quarantine hotel and the other, after being taken to hospital in poor condition.

“Our medical team is closely monitoring their condition,” she said.

Chuang added the patients were among 120 people who all arrived on the same flight from Africa yesterday, along with about 90 others who were in quarantine hotels.

Those found infected had worked for the same company in Guinea and were on their way back home on the mainland.

Some of those who arrived earlier had already left Hong Kong after completing the seven-day mandatory hotel quarantine.

Chuang said about 200 more people from Africa are headed to Hong Kong in the next few days.

She said health authorities will be focusing on testing arrivals from Guinea as there has been no word about a ban being imposed on travelers coming from the African country.

But she said there is no cause for alarm as malaria is not transmitted through air or the respiratory tracts like the coronavirus.

“The disease is transmitted through a vector, that is mosquitoes. There are no mosquitoes in urban areas of Hong Kong that would transmit malaria, so the risk of transmission in the community is very low," Chuang said.

Despite this, Dr Lau Ka-hin of the Hospital Authority said the mosquito alert index has been raised to the highest level, since there are other mosquito-borne diseases like dengue fever.

This means various government organizations would reinforce anti-mosquito control like applying larvicidal oil in stagnant water.

Separately, CHP reported 4,602 new Covid cases, of which 280 were imported.

The countries from which more than 10 confirmed cases had flown from are: United Kingdom, 26; United States, 32; India, 19; Singapore, 17; Philippines, 16; Thailand, 15; Canada and Japan, 12.

Four more patients with Covid have died, aged 72 to 93. One received no vaccination while the three others were fully jabbed. They took the death toll in the fifth wave to 9,322.

One of the patients, a 72-year-old man, had received four doses. He fainted at home yesterday and was rushed to hospital where tests showed his heart had stopped beating. Attempts at resuscitation failed.

At the mortuary, a rapid antigen test showed the patient had Covid-19.

Lau again advised people who live with elderly family members to test them once they start showing discomfort, or take them to a doctor immediately for medical consultation.

A total of 1,467 coronavirus patients are currently receiving treatment in various public hospitals, including 147 who were newly diagnosed.

Among them, 28 are in critical condition, including seven who are in intensive care; and 16 are in serious condition.

Covid caseload down to 4,428; Phl still one of top sources for imported cases

Posted on No comments

By The SUN

The UK is the biggest source of imported cases but the Philippines ranks among the top 5

Hong Kong’s Covid-19 caseload dipped back to 4,428 on Friday, with 205 of them imported.

Among the imported cases 37 were detected at the airport, 133 during hotel quarantine and 35 post-quarantine.

As in the past few days the Philippines emerged as one of the biggest sources of the imported cases, with 17 new arrivals from the country testing positive. On Aug 4, it was 24; on Aug 3, it was 23; and on Aug 2 it was 21.

Still, other countries had consistently posted far more infections, especially the United Kingdom which had 40 on Friday; and the United States and India, which each had 18.

What the figures suggest is that there is a rising trend in infections in the countries from where the patients had come from, including the Philippines; and that the coronavirus appears to be taking a longer time to incubate.

Meanwhile, the Hospital Authority again reminded the public to take extra care when they have members of their household who are considered high risk to Covid, like the elderly.

HA’s Dr Lau Ka-hin gave the advice as he reported that one of the four Covid patients who died Thursday appeared to have been infected by a household member. The fatalities comprised one man and three women and were aged 70 to 94.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Lau said the 70-year-old female patient who passed away had three vaccine doses and did not have any serious ailment.

On Thursday her daughter tested positive for Covid-19 and the elderly woman was given a rapid antigen test, which also showed her infected. The woman felt unwell and had shortness of breath so she was rushed to hospital.

But shortly after she was taken to the accident and emergency section, the woman’s pulse stopped. She passed on even as efforts were made to revive her.

Lau said those who test positive and live with elderly or other high-risk family members should make sure the vulnerable household members are isolated immediately and if they show symptoms, they should get immediate medical attention.

On Wednesday, a 90-year-old female patient also died after a family member who paid a “compassionate visit” to her at the hospital tested positive for the virus on a PCR test the next day.

The elderly woman was also tested after her death and she was found to have the virus. Three other patients who shared the ward with her also tested positive.

Today’s three other Covid-related deaths did not complete their vaccination. They took the number of deaths from the fifth wave of the pandemic to 9,318.

A total number of 1,492 patients are receiving treatment from public hospitals after 197 more were admitted in the past 24 hours.

There are now 28 patients in critical condition, including eight who are in intensive care units; while 16 others are seriously ill.

2nd traveler from Africa dies of malaria

Posted on 05 August 2022 No comments

By The SUN

The latest fatality was already in poor condition when brought to Queen Elizabeth Hospital

Another male patient who flew in with malaria died in hospital this afternoon, the second among 30 travelers found infected after arriving from Africa.

According to Hospital Authority’s Dr Lau Ka-hin, the deceased patient was admitted in poor condition at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Wednesday.

He was transferred to the intensive care unit where he was put on life support before he succumbed to the disease.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

The first patient, who was 52 years old, was found dead yesterday in his quarantine hotel.

Lau said this is the worst imported case of malaria even seen in Hong Kong.

"Our experts said they have never seen such cases in which patients carry such a high number of malaria parasites," he said.

Pindutin para sa detalye

Thirty men aged 25 to 57 who arrived from Africa from Jul 1 to Aug 1 were found to carry the malaria parasite. Among them were 21 who had come from Guinea.

According to the Centre for Health Protection, the men spent their quarantine in around six to seven hotels, including Silka Seaview where the first patient died.

The 29 others were sent to various hospitals for check-up: eight at Princess Margaret, two at Queen Elizabeth and nine at Kwong Wah Hospital.

Ten have since been discharged, while the 19, including today’s fatality, were admitted for treatment.

The HA said it will buy more medicines for treating the mosquito-borne disease in case more imported cases are detected.

They will also try to keep an eye on passengers coming from malaria-endemic places, and send those who show symptoms to hospitals.

But Lau said it would be difficult to subject every arrival from Africa, especially those from Guinea where 21 of the patients had come from, to blood test and medical surveillance.

CHP had earlier said the risk of local transmission is extremely low because the female Anopheline mosquito which spreads the malaria parasite has not been seen in Hong Kong in a decade.

Magkapatid, parehong kulong dahil sa isang buwang panloloob at pagnanakaw

Posted on No comments

Press for details
