HK to scrap amber code from tomorrow

CE Lee says the decision to scrap the yellow code is based on science

Chief Executive John Lee has announced the scrapping of the amber health code from Wednesday, which has long been the reason many tourists still stay away from Hong Kong as it limits their movements during the first three days of their arrival.

Speaking before the Executive Council meeting earlier today, the CE said people who visit restaurants and other places deemed high risk would not be asked to scan QR codes with their “Leave Home Safe” app anymore, but they will still have to present their vaccination records.

“The decisions were based on data and risks. The infection risk from imported cases is lower than the risk from local infections. We believe that the lifting [of the measures] will not increase the risk of local outbreaks,” Lee said.

However, those who test positive on arrival will still get a red code and will still need to isolate based on existing protocols. But with the relaxed measures introduced only last week, those who get two negative results on rapid antigen tests can end their isolation on the fifth day, instead of the previous seventh day.

The so-called “0+3” health protocol that Hong Kong had imposed previously allowed new arrivals to leave the airport immediately after taking their PCR arrival test, but will still have to undergo medical surveillance for three days, meaning they could not enter restaurants, hospitals and other places deemed high risk.

The relaxed measures came as health authorities reported 14,717 cases on Monday, of which 5 per cent, or 704 cases, were imported.

In the mainland, authorities have also just allowed Covid-19 patients with mild or no symptoms to isolate for five days instead of a week at a quarantine facility. Their close contacts can also quarantine at home for five days instead of eight.

Mainland residents are also no longer required to present a green health code to indicate they are negative for Covid-19 when entering public places, except hospitals, schools and care homes for the elderly.

Posted on 12 December 2022 No comments

‘Simbang Gabi’ kicks off Dec. 15 for HK’s Filipino Catholics

Posted on No comments

By The SUN

While Simbang Gabi in churches is back, the Christmas Eve mass in Chater is still off the cards

Emerging from a two-year lull of Christmas festivities due to Covid-19, devout Filipino Catholics could expect bigger crowds in churches across the territory as countdown to Christmas Day begins on December 15.

With Covid-19 restrictions easing further as of November 17, allowing churches to admit even those on Amber Health Code to hear mass, Catholics could now look forward to a better attended Simbang Gabi.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

That means, a bigger proportion of the estimated 177,000 Filipino Catholics in Hong Kong (or about 44% of all 401,000 Catholics in the territory as of August 2021) could be attending the nine-day devotional masses, or between December 15 to 23.

Simbang Gabi will be held at 9pm in some churches like St St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Central, or at 8pm or earlier in others, like St Jude’s in North Point.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Though not all of the Catholic Diocese’s 39 churches and 29 chapels across the territory will hold Simbang Gabi, all will keep their traditional Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services.

At Resurrection’s Church in Kwun Tong, for example, English mass will be held at 9pm on December 24 or Christmas Eve, and at 3pm on Christmas Day.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

The traditional Simbang Gabi, a devotional, nine-day series of masses in anticipation of Christmas, is unique to Filipino Catholics. While some believe their wishes will come true if they complete these masses, others do so as part of tradition and an affirmation of their faith.

The practice originated in the early days of Spanish rule in the Philippines, when evening novenas used to be held in the lead up to Christmas. Being devout Catholics, Filipinos in the provinces who were mostly farmers, would attend despite toiling all day in the heat.

As a compromise, priests began to say masses in the early morning before people went out to work in the fields. Thus, Simbang Gabi used to be held between 3am and 6am, from December 16 to 24, across the Philippines.

But lately, the mass schedules shifted back to early evening, with some churches in the Philippines, especially those in malls, now holding it as early as 6pm starting on December 15.

HK activists pay tribute to Filipinos who died defending rights

Posted on 11 December 2022 No comments

By Danilo A. Reyes

Participants write solidarity messages on a tarpaulin used at the event

Expressed in various art forms, the Cultural Night held on Dec 10 at KUC Space in Jordan to mark International Human Rights Day, turned emotional as it paid tribute to Filipinos who died defending human rights.

Among the victims honored at the event were Ericson Acosta, a community organiser who was also a poet and a singer; and Joseph Jimenez, a peasant organizer, who were both killed on Nov. 30 this year on Negros Island in the Visayas.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Acosta and Jimenez were last seen alive when arrested by the military but died a few hours later, in circumstances their friends believe were due to an armed encounter. They became the latest addition to the growing list of leftist activists killed across the country.

Ramon Bultron, Migrante International’s deputy secretary general, who himself was subjected to overt surveillance and threats, said that “red tagging” or the labelling of leftist activists as communists, has intensified the attacks on leftist activists.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Bultron said the worsening abuse is a continuing reminder that the “rights on paper,” the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948, is still an ongoing struggle to realise these rights, and many have died defending it.

Bultron says he's a victim of red-tagging of activists

In a statement sent to the SUN Hong Kong, Cristina Palabay, secretary general of Philippine-based human rights group Karapatan, said that the rising number of victims were no longer due to extrajudicial killings alone, but also political imprisonment.

Since Ferdinand Marcos Jr. took over as president in June 2022, the number of political prisoners has gone up to 828 as of the end of last month. Among them, 96 are sickly and 77 are elderly.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

On top of this, Palabay said about 10,000 civilians have been displaced and the lives of 3,000 others were put in danger because of indiscriminate shooting by soldiers in the countryside during military operations.

During the event, black and white photos of those who died defending human rights in the Philippines were put on display, along with the date on when each had died, and how.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Deaconess Joyous Prim paid tribute by reciting a poem she wrote, “5 months in,” in which she portrayed the almost daily calls for help from activists in the Philippines since Marcos Jr. took office.

Prim was one of the organisers of the event hosted by the Hong Kong Campaign for Human Rights and Peace in the Philippines (HKCAHRPP), a coalition of Hong Kong-based human rights defenders.

Another participant, American activist Sienna Christie, paid tribute to the late Zara Alvarez, a human rights defender and teacher on Negros Island whom she met during a visit in the Philippines years back.

Christie’s song, “Name of a List,” was provocative and emotional, as it recounted her personal encounter with Alavarez when she was still alive.

Prim and Christie’s tributes were a reminder that the people on the placards were not just  numbers nor names, but were human beings who cared for others.

Posted on No comments

  • BOOK YOUR FLIGHTS NOW! PRESS FOR DETAILS
