Posted on 13 September 2023 No comments

Filipina looking for owner of dog that bit her 2 years ago

Posted on No comments

Acosta's finger was still bleeding when she had this photo taken with the dog that bit her

For 12 days in late 2021 to early 2022, Filipina domestic worker Ethel Acosta lay in hospital, suffering through the intense pain from a bite by a huge Golden Retriever.

She was bitten after she tried to pry the big dog away from the smallish chow chow that was in her care and which the much larger dog held by the neck.

Acosta said she had to undergo three operations that included a skin graft, from the deep wound she got from the dog bite on her ring finger.

It happened while she was out walking her employer’s dog in a Cyberport park on Dec. 27, 2021.

(While our dogs were playing, the big dog jumped on my dog, and tried to bite it on the neck. I pulled its leash and the dog bit my finger, hard).

She was first taken to Canossa Hospital, and later transferred to Queen Mary where police officers took her statement and conducted an investigation into the incident.

But long after her ordeal, Acosta has yet to get relief from the owner of the dog that attacked her, even after spending time in hospital and undergoing physiotherapy afterwards, all of which cost her employer around $27,000.

The wound from the dog bite was so deep a skin graft had to be done to patch it up

She said she never received an apology, much less an offer of compensation from the dog owner.

With help from her employer, Acosta filed a case at the Small Claims Tribunal, listing down the dog owner’s name and address at Residence Bel Air in Pokfulam.

However, the respondent never showed up in court, and when Acosta and her employer tried to look for her at the address given them, the guards there said the woman had already moved out a year earlier.

When her case was heard again at the tribunal last July 25, Acosta was advised to put out an advertisement naming the absent respondent, and state why she is being sought. Hopefully, said the tribunal officer, the respondent would show up and pay her claim.

Alternatively, she could go back to the police and ask for help in tracking down the dog owner, as the case had been reported to them previously.

As proof of her claim, Acosta showed photos of her holding the leash of the dog that bit her, with her bloodied finger visible.

Unfortunately, she only managed to get the first name and telephone number of the helper tending the dog, but through her, Acosta got the name of her employer and their address in Bel Air.

While she was in hospital, the other helper named Leah who gave her telephone number as 46273923, reportedly stopped responding to her calls and text messages.

Neither Leah nor her employer showed up at the tribunal for the hearing of Acosta’s claim.

Posted on 12 September 2023 No comments

The fare increases come amid a continuing rise in demand for the much cheaper option of taking the “Golden Bus” which shuttles between Hong Kong and Macau almost non-stop, including at night.

For the same amount of time it takes to go between the two places, all that passengers need to pay is $65 for the regular fare, and $33 for concessionary fare.

Meanwhile Sun Ferry will revise its fare for the fast ferry between Central and Cheung Chau to $29.20, an increase of $6.90, while on weekends and public holidays, the one-way fare will be $42.30, which is higher by $9.80 than the current fare.

Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry, on the other hand, got the nod of the Transport Department to raise the fare for multi-journey tickets by 8% and the single-journey tickets by 19%.

Both companies had sought to double their fares  to cover the rising cost of operations and dwindling patronage, especially in the wake of the pandemic.

DMW warns OFWs to be wary of online love scams

Posted on No comments

Stickers on a fake package supposedly sent by an online lover  to a HK OFW (File)

The Department of Migrant Workers has warned Filipinos to be careful when engaging people on social media because of an alarming increase in online love scams specifically targeting overseas Filipino workers.

The warning came in the wake of a report that a Filipina OFW in Switzerland was recently defrauded of 40,000 Swiss francs (about P2.5 million) by her online boyfriend.

According to a report filed with DMW, the scammer who pretended to be a rich foreigner, started wooing the Filipina online. After gaining her trust, the man told her he was sending her a gift through post, but later on said he needed money to get customs to release the package.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE!

The OFW was convinced to send money for the “customs-related issues” after her online lover promised to send her a bigger amount in return by courier.

(We plead with our fellow Filipinos to avoid falling prey to online romance or love scams. Do not fall for the sweet promises of a person you have not even met. They have already victimized a lot of people in different countries).

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Several OFWs in Hong Kong have also reported losing money from such scams, dating back to about 20 years ago, when dating sites started becoming popular.

But love scams nowadays do not only involve false promises of a valuable package being sent but also offers of employment and/or investments.

In the biggest love scam involving an OFW in HK which was reported about a year ago, the victim lost $113,000 she raised from loans that she and her sister had taken out and her life savings, to an online lover she never met in person. (see story here: https://www.sunwebhk.com/2022/09/filipina-dh-loses-113k-in-love-scam.html)

Purported photo of the man who tricked the HK OFW into sending him $113k

The man, who introduced himself as American engineer, told the OFW he had been locked out of his bank account, and needed money urgently to finance some projects. As what happens in such cases, the victim only came to her senses when she ran out of money, and could no longer contact her ardent suitor.

The DMW urged OFWs not to give any of their hard-earned money and life savings to someone they only met through the internet.

OFWs who lose money to these predators may seek help from the respective MWOs and Philippine Embassy where they are located.

They may also report suspected online illegal recruitment scams to the DMW Migrant Workers Protection Bureau through their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/airbranch or email at mwpb@dmw.gov.ph.

They may also be contacted through their hotline: 632 8721-0619.
