Posted on 06 October 2023 No comments

Filipino jailed for arson threat & assault back in court

Posted on 05 October 2023 No comments

Ronald Bondoc

A Filipino waiter who was sent to prison last April for threatening to burn down the Philippine Consulate and hurting a staff member, was back in Eastern Court today, this time charged with beating up his live-in partner and threatening to assault her again.

Ronald Bondoc, 42, who was detained after being arrested for the attack last Oct. 2 on Karla Gonzales, was returned to jail after the charges were read to him, and Principal Magistrate Ivy Chui rejected his offer of $1,200 bail.

Bondoc collapsed, cried and had to be prodded to stand up as Magistrate Chui noted that he was facing charges for a similar offense “very soon after serving your sentence”, referring to his previous conviction for assaulting a Consulate staff.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Bondoc’s duty lawyer had earlier offered bail for his provisional release, but the prosecutor objected , citing the previous conviction and strong evidence in their possession, such as photos of the victim’s injuries.

Chui set a bail review on Oct. 13, and advised Bondoc that he could go to the High Court to apply for bail.

Bondoc was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, which is punishable with up to three years’ imprisonment under the Offense Against the Person Ordinance, for beating up Gonzales at their flat in Jardine’s Crescent, Causeway Bay, on Oct. 2.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

He was also charged with threatening her with injury, with the intent to alarm her, which is punishable with up to two years in prison and fine of up to $5,000 under the Crimes Ordinance.

The new charges came less than six months after Bondoc was sentenced to 10 weeks in jail by Magistrate Leona Chan on April 3, also at Eastern Court. He was found guilty after trial in which he defended himself, on all three charges laid against him.

Magistrate Chan sentenced Bondoc to six weeks in jail for the first charge of criminal intimidation, because he had repeatedly issued the threat to burn down the Consulate and hurt its staff, particularly, “Arnel,” in a telephone call lasting more than an hour on Jan 22 last year.

In the second charge of common assault, Bondoc was sentenced to four weeks in jail. He had gone to the Consulate on Jan 24, 2022 armed with a golf club, and then grabbed a male staff by the neck before pushing him to the ground.

Two weeks of this sentence were ordered to be served concurrently, and the other two weeks, consecutively, to the first sentence of six weeks in jail.

Magistrate Chan added another four weeks’ imprisonment to Bondoc’s sentence for the third charge of loitering causing concern, which happened on March 28, 2022 when he brought along a metal bar and hung around the lift lobby of the Consulate before being taken away by the police.

Two weeks of this sentence were to be served consecutive to the previous sentences, making a total of 10 weeks’ imprisonment.

Victoria Harbour off Central looks calm and cool tonight (HK Observatory photo)

As Tropical Cyclone Koinu moves closer to Hong Kong and with autumn just around the corner, temperatures are forecast to fall starting tomorrow. It will be significantly cooler on Sunday, Oct. 8, with temperatures ranging between 23 and 28 degrees.

This would be the first time since September 17 that temperatures would fall to below 30 degrees.

However, showers are expected for the next nine days, and there will be water surges at sea from tomorrow until Sunday.

Thunderstorms are also expected until next Monday, with occasional heavy rain. After this, mild weather is expected with brief periods of sunshine during the day.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

But for today, the “very hot weather” warning was again in force, after the hottest October day on record was set yesterday.

The latest weather forecast shows Koinu has entered the Taiwan Strait, after bringing heavy rain to the island for two days. It has weakened since due to the monsoon, and is expected to maintain a distance of around 500 kilometers or more from Hong Kong today and early tomorrow.

The Standby Signal No 1 which was hoisted last night remains in force today. Higher signals could be hoisted depending on the strength and the proximity of Koinu to the territory over the weekend.

T1 standby signal to be raised tonight or early tomorrow

Posted on 04 October 2023 No comments

Koinu is now bringing heavy rains to Taiwan, where it is forecast to make a landfall tomorrow

Hong Kong is on standby for the approach of yet another typhoon which earlier forecasts said could turn into a super typhoon.

The Observatory said that according to the present forecast, Tropical Cyclone Koinu will enter within 800 kilometers of Hong Kong between tonight and early tomorrow, which would prompt the hoisting of Standby Signal No 1.

Koinu is reportedly pounding Taiwan with heavy rain and winds throughout today, Wednesday,  closing business and schools in the east and triggering warnings in most parts of the iland – and it has not even made landfall yet.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

The tropical cyclone which formed over the Pacific Ocean last weekend, is expected to make landfall on the island tomorrow morning.

Earlier it bypassed the Philippines, though it also brought severe thunderstorms and heavy rain in the north of the country.

It is now about 167 kilometers away eastern Taiwan. It is moving west at about 15 kilometers per hour, carrying sustained winds of about 212 kilometers per hour, and even stronger gusts, according to the New York Times, citing the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, a meteorological sevice operated by the United States.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

In Hong Kong, the approach of Koinu brought the hottest October day on record, with the temperature rising to 34.6 degrees this afternoon.

A “very hot weather:” warning was issued at about 7am and people were advised to avoid prolonged activities under the sun.

The Observatory said Koinu is expected to move across the southern part of Taiwan towards the coast of eastern Guandong, then westwards toward the Pearl River Estuary.

Koinu is expected to weaken gradually under the influence of the northeast monsoon, and its impact on Hong Kong will depend on how fast it weakens before it comes to within 400 kilometers of the city.

Pindutin dito

The weather watch comes as some parts of Hong Kong, particularly Shau Kei Wan and Shek O, are still recovering from the impact of the record rainfall that inundated many parts of the city last September 7 and 8.

A press release issued by the Observatory today confirmed the deaths of at least two people in the worst rainstorm to have hit the city since record-taking began in 1882. Preliminary reports showed there were 75 reports of landslide and 60 reports of flooding.

The rains which were preceded by Tropical Cyclone Haikui caused the issuance of the Black Rainstorm Warning for 16 hours and 35 minutes, the longest on record since the introduction of the rainstorm warning system in 1992.

The Observatory also recorded an all-time high September rainfall of 1,067.1 millimetres, more than three times the September normal of 321.4 millimetres and easily breaking the previous record of 844.2 millimetres set way back in September 1952.

Another record for the longest consecutive very hot days for September was also set last month. Overall, the month remained hotter than usual with a mean temperature of 28.5 degrees, 0.6 degrees above the normal of 27.9 degrees.

Another extreme weather condition was set earlier in the month, when Super Typhoon Saola swept across Hong Kong on September 1 and 2. Hurricane Signal No 10 was issued during the passage of Saola, the first time since Super Typhoon Mangkhut hit Hong Kong in September 2018.

With a maximum sustained wind of 230 kilometres per hour near its centre, Saola was the second most intense tropical cyclone to affect the South China Sea since 1950.

Preliminary reports showed more than 3,000 reports of fallen trees, 21 of flooding and two of landslides were reported during Saola’s passage.

There were also about 40 reports of damaged scaffolding, signboards and windows. The power supply was temporarily interrupted in some places. At the Hong Kong International Airport 460 flights were cancelled.

The storm surge induced by Saola also resulted in flooding in some low-lying coastal areas of Hong Kong, including Sha Tin, Tai Po, and Tai O.

While more than 80 people were injured, no fatalities were reported.

Pilipinong driver, 'guilty' sa salang pagsugat sa kababayan

Posted on No comments
