While the police say they are still investigating the case, Consul Saret reminded everyone in the community to take care when crossing streets in Central, particularly Des Voeux Road, where several traffic accidents involving Filipinos have been reported over the year.

“Please only cross at the designated pedestrian crossings, and only when the light is green,” Consul Saret says. “A lot of these accidents happened because our compatriots were jaywalking.”

Bystanders called the police, and they came along with paramedics.

The incident caused some confusion earlier, as a Filipina DH took videos of another woman being loaded onto an ambulance at about 1:10pm earlier Sunday.

Police later said they did not have information on this incident, even though the video shows officers were around taking information from bystanders.

Two Filipinas are shown on a separate video loading stuff onto a black backpack apparently belonging to the woman victim, and turning it over to officers. It is not clear if they were the woman’s companions.

In the later incident, both victims were taken to Queen Mary Hospital while the 58-year-old driver surnamed Yeung was held for questioning.

Police denied issuing any statement that the driver had lost control of the vehicle. The spokeswoman said their investigation is ongoing.

Other reports said the impact of the crash was so severe the left side of the bus’ windshield was shattered. The vehicle had to be towed away from the scene for inspection.

Lone Filipino among Hong Kong’s new 17 AIDS patients

Posted on No comments

By Vir B. Lumicao

The Filipino man acquired HIV and AIDS through bisexual contact

A Filipino man was among 105 new HIV and 17 new AIDS (acquired immunity deficiency syndrome) cases in Hong Kong for the third quarter this year, the Centre for Health Protection said Friday, Dec 3.

Responding to a query from The SUN, a CHP spokesman said the Filipino patient acquired AIDS through bisexual contact.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Sexual contact remained the major route of HIV transmission among infected Filipinos, the spokesman said. He suggested using condoms consistently and properly to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

The single new HIV/AIDS case among the estimated 200,000 Filipinos in Hong Kong in the past quarter was a big improvement from the second quarter, when six out of 131 new HIV and three out of 26 new AIDS cases came from the community.

This past quarter, an additional 105 cases of HIV infection were reported to the CHP, taking the cumulative total reported locally to 11,122 since 1984.

The CHP said that of the 105 HIV cases involving 85 males and 20 females reported in the quarter, 49 acquired the infection via homosexual or bisexual contact and 25 via heterosexual contact.

The transmission routes of the remaining 31 cases have yet to be determined due to incomplete information when they were reported, the CHP said.

The new cases were mainly reported by three major sources: public hospitals, clinics and laboratories, which listed 47 cases; the Department of Health’s Social Hygiene Clinics, which handled 16 cases; and AIDS service organizations, which attended to 15 cases.

Also, 72 of the HIV-infected people have already received HIV specialist services from the DH or the Hospital Authority.

In the third quarter, 17 new AIDS cases were reported, of which 10 cases were attributed to homosexual or bisexual contact and six were due to heterosexual contact.

The transmission route of the remaining case had yet to be determined. In the third quarter, the most common AIDS-defining illness was Pneumocystis pneumonia, a kind of fungal chest infection.

Since 1985, a cumulative total of 2,297 confirmed AIDS cases have been reported in Hong Kong.

The spokesman said that although HIV could lead to full-blown AIDS, lifelong treatment with antiretroviral drugs could prevent this happening.

He said HIV treatment also improves the quality of life and survival rate of HIV/AIDS patients, the extent of which depends on how early antiretroviral treatment is initiated.

Notably, people with HIV who achieve sustained viral suppression to an undetectable level will no longer transmit the virus through sex.

He urged members of the public with a history of unsafe sex to take an HIV antibody test early. They can call the DH’s AIDS Hotline, 2780 2211, to arrange a free, anonymous and confidential HIV test. HIV-positive people should seek specialist care as soon as possible, the spokesman said.

The public may visit the following pages for more information: the DH’s Virtual AIDS Office (www.aids.gov.hk), the Red Ribbon Centre (www.rrc.gov.hk), the AIDS Hotline website (www.27802211.com) and the Gay Men HIV Information website (www.21171069.gov.hk).

DH who left baby ward at MTR station to steal chocolates jailed 5 months

Posted on No comments

By Vir B. Lumicao

The Filipina's young wards were left unattended in Hang Hau MTR station for about 23 minutes

A Filipina domestic helper who admitted leaving her year-old baby ward and her sister, 9, in an MTR station in Tseung Kwan O in September to steal chocolates in a nearby shop was jailed for a total of five months on Friday, Dec 4.

Defendant Maritess B. Grospe, 38, bowed her head and sobbed as Kwun Tong Court Magistrate Bina Chainrai rejected the defense counsel’s appeal for a lenient sentence.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

The lawyer, citing a background report that Chainrai called for before sentencing the defendant, said the woman committed the crime because she was in debt paying off the medical expenses of her sick mother.

But the magistrate responded in anger. “She left the one-year-old child inside the MTR station to go and steal chocolates. How can that be correct?” Chainrai asked.

The lawyer replied his client was remorseful for her action, saying she, in fact, loves and cares for the baby boy and her 9-year-old sister. “She understands that what she has done can’t be excused,” the lawyer added.

Chainrai sentenced Grospe to two weeks in jail for stealing three packs of pistachio at a Best Mart 360 shop in MCP Discovery, Tseung Kwan O, and four weeks for taking many other items including 85 packs of chocolate and six packs of luncheon meat in a second BM 360 store at The Lane mall in Hang Hau, TKO.

She ordered the two- and four-week sentences to run concurrently. Then she imposed a four-month sentence on Grospe for leaving the children in the station. This was to run consecutively with the theft sentence, hence a total of four months and four weeks.

The prosecution said a staff in the BM380 shop at MCP Discovery noticed at 10:40am that three pistachio packs were gone from the shelves with no payment recorded.

She checked the CCTV footage and saw the defendant taking the pistachios worth $504 on the morning of Sept 8, then left without paying. They reported the incident.

At 1pm on the same day, a staff in another BM380 shop at The Lane in Hang Hau noticed that several items were missing from the shelves without payment records.

She checked the CCTV footage and saw the defendant take the items for the shelves, put them in her recycle bag and left without paying. The theft was reported.

The defendant returned to the store just as the police arrived and she was identified by the staff around 4pm. Police arrested her.

During questioning, the police learned that the two children were left at the Hang Hau MTR station.

The police went to search for the children and found them at 4:15pm. They had been left unattended for about 23 minutes.
