2 newly arrived Filipina DHs among 10 new infected patients

Two Filipina domestic helpers who arrived from Manila two days apart last week were among 10 new coronavirus patients confirmed today, Nov 8, by the Hong Kong Health Department.

Three of the new cases were locals whose source of infection was unknown, while the rest were all new arrivals from overseas, the Centre for Health Protection said.

Today’s cases drove up to 5,375 the total number of Covid-19 patients in Hong Kong.

A CHP information officer said the first Filipina patient, who is 33, arrived on Philippine Airlines flight PR300 on Nov 6. She was transferred from the testing center at the airport to a hospital.

The second Filipina patient is 20 years old and arrived on Hong Kong Airlines flight HX782 on Nov 4. She was found positive three days after she was moved to a quarantine center for being a close contact of a fellow passenger who was found infected on arrival.

The imported cases also included a 28-year-old Indonesian maid, a 20-year-old man from Serbia and a 49-year-old female from Kenya, who all tested positive at the airport. 

A man aged 43 and a woman aged 50, who arrived together from Paris on Oct 24 and were under quarantine at Paris Garden Hotel in Kowloon, made up the were also among the confirmed positive today.

The three local cases whose source of infection is unknown included a 38-year-old woman residing at Cresmont Villa in Discovery Bay, and works in Central. She developed a fever on Oct 19 but only saw a doctor on Nov 5.

Another case involved a 42-year-old woman living at Green Villa in Yuen Long whose husband had earlier been confirmed with Covid-19. She went to Pok Oi Hospital on Nov. 5, and was tested.

The third local case was a 50-year-old local man residing at Hing Wo House, Po Nga Court, Taipo and works in Everbright Centre in Wan Chai. He developed a cough on Oct 28 and went to Baptist Hospital on Nov 4, but still went to work until Nov 6.

The Hospital Authority, meanwhile, said that five confirmed cases were discharged from hospital as of 9am Sunday, bringing the total number of recoveries to 5,144 patients with confirmed or probable infection. 

A total of 84 confirmed patients are currently confined in 20 public hospitals, among whom seven are in critical condition, four are serious and 73 are stable.

Prenetics distributes and collects specimen samples for testing free of charge

Meanwhile, the government said in a press release that testing agency, Hong Kong Molecular Pathology Diagnostic Centre Limited, will provide free specimen collection and testing services in Tai Po from Monday, Nov 9, until Wednesday, Nov. 11.

The statement said that the free tests are being given because of a number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Tai Po recently, “in order to identify cases in the community as early as possible to help cut the transmission chain.”

Three mobile stations will be set up at the following locations: the volleyball court next to Kwong Wai House of Kwong Fuk Estate; open space outside Fu Shin Community Hall; and the open space between the Pai Lau and the Pavilion of Wai Tau Tsuen.

All three will operate from 10am to 5pm from Nov 9 to 11. Registration will be on-site.

At the same time, another testing agency, Prenetics Ltd will continue distributing and collecting specimen bottles by mobile van in Tai Po for two more days, after starting its operation Sunday afternoon. The test is free of charge.

Deploying the mobile van aims to facilitate and encourage individuals who perceive themselves as having a higher risk of exposure to undergo free Covid-19 testing, the government said.

The Prenetics mobile van will be parked near the taxi station in front of Hang Seng Bank at 41 Kwong Fuk Road from 10am to 5pm on Nov 9 and 10.
