Health authorities have further tightened anti-epidemic measures by ordering, with immediate effect, that a single case of infection in a residential building, whether it is from a known or unknown source, will trigger mandatory testing for all its tenants.

The order was issued today, Feb. 6, as 19 new Covid-19 cases were reported, bringing the total number of coronavirus infections in Hong Kong to 10,609.

Previously, compulsory testing was ordered only if the source of at least one infection in a building was untraceable.

“With that very vigilant type of ring-fencing, we could, we believe, detect these cases earlier, especially for the cases of connected ones,” said Dr Ronald Lam, deputy director of health and the new controller of the Centre for Health Protection.

“We are right now at a very important crossroads, you can see the cases daily are a bit swinging up and down, so it is quite critical that we have to further strengthen the measures further in order to compress the cases downward.”

Lam says stricter measures are needed to further bring the number of cases down

Among the newly reported cases, 16 were infected locally, six of which could not be traced.

The patients in the untraceable cases live in Hung Hom, Fan Ling, Mandarin Court on Shanghai Street, King’s Road and Tuen Mun. Among them were a retiree, foreign domestic helper, student and security guard.

The linked cases included three close contacts of workers at construction sites of the airport’s third runway project, bringing the total number of infections there to 27. They consist of 15 workers and 12 close contacts.

The three imported cases included a domestic helper from the Philippines and returning residents from South Africa and Pakistan.
