Expert panel rules out link between Covid-19 jabs and deaths of 5 people

25 March 2021

 By The SUN

The experts say they have not seen any links between the deaths and vaccination

A panel of experts advising the government on after-effects of vaccinations has said that there appeared to be no link between the death of a 60-year-old man on Wednesday and the Sinovac jab he had on Mar 11.

Panel member Lee Cheuk-kwong said in a press conference that the death was probably caused by the cardiovascular disease the patient had suffered from. But he said they will review the case when necessary information is available.

The man was found unconscious at home in the early morning of Mar 24, and was rushed to Yan Chai Hospital where he passed away after a few hours. Initial investigations showed he had a history of hypertension, hyperlipidemia (elevated fat levels in blood) and carotid artery disease.

He was the 10th person to die after inoculation. Nine of the patients had the Sinovac jab and the tenth, the one from BioNTech.

The experts said there was no direct causal relation between the deaths of five other people and their having had Covid-19 vaccines earlier. However, they are still waiting for full autopsy reports before making a final assessment.

Autopsy reports in 5 deaths show no link to Covid jabs received by patients

The first case involved a 63-year-old man who passed away at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Feb 28, but whose death was announced only on Mar 2. The autopsy report indicated he died of severe myocardial infarction, or heart attack.

The second case involved an 80-year-old man who passed away at the Caritas Medical Centre on Mar 13. Based on his medical history and preliminary autopsy findings, the patient also died of severe heart attack.

In the third case, another 63-year-old man was taken to North District Hospital on Mar 13 and passed away the next day. His medical history and preliminary autopsy findings showed he succumbed to heart failure.

The fourth death, which was announced on Mar 19, was about a 66-year-old man who was admitted for treatment in Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital. He received a dose of BioNTech vaccine three days earlier.

The expert said their preliminary finding was that the death was not directly linked to his Covid-19 vaccination, noting that he had diabetes and hypertension. But they will make a more detailed assessment once his autopsy report is available.

The fifth case pertains to an 80-year-old woman with history of hypertension and diabetes who was found unconscious at home on Mar 19. She was pronounced dead at Queen Mary Hospital. She received a Sinovac dose on Mar 2, or 17 days before her death. Her medical history and autopsy report showed she had cardiovascular disease and heart failure.

A government statement said the mortality data over three years for the same period, or from Feb 26 to Mar 21, showed an average of 278 deaths due to ischaemic heart diseases, including acute myocardial infarction, among people aged 60 or above.

Based on these figures, the statement said the experts found no unusual pattern in the recent deaths.

Asked about other side effects, such as Bell's palsy (temporary one-sided facial drooping) reportedly experienced by nine people after vaccination, the experts said the figures so far do not suggest any abnormality, but they will continue to monitor cases.

Ivan Hung, who is also with the panel, said the vaccine manufacturers could be alerted if the number of cases persistently exceeds the baseline for several months.

Hung also allayed concerns over the temporary halt to the BioNTech inoculation, saying it was “a very minor hiccup…in the vaccination program. He said he expects the vaccination to resume shortly.
