The CHP said that 73 people had been moved to quarantine centers after being identified as close contacts of those wrongly declared as positive, before the mistake was uncovered.

Government adviser Yuen Kwok-yung said after inspecting the laboratory that the two positive ones in the batch of samples taken to the BGI laboratory the previous day were coincidentally the first two that technicians handled.

The Food and Health Bureau said it will suspend the use of BGI Group’s mobile sampling stations and will not rule out using less testing services of the group.

The bureau said it will follow the case seriously and impose punishment based on the results of the probe and seriousness of the event, in which ending the contract is an option.

The government has asked BGI to make an in-depth investigation and report its findings. It also asked BGI to follow suggestions by Yuen and teams of the University of Hong Kong. A third party examination by an independent group will also be made to ensure the investigation is professional.

Any violation of professional codes will be reported to and handled by the Medical Laboratory Technologists Board.
