Two imported Covid-19 cases confirmed, 5 others preliminary positive

Two imported cases were reported Friday, involving travelers from Russia and the US

The Centre for Health Protection reported two new imported cases Friday, and ordered a lockdown of a residential building in Sheung Wan where a man who tested preliminary positive on arrival test at the airport had lived during the incubation period.

One of the two confirmed cases, a 41-year-old man from Russia, was found infected with the highly transmissible L452R mutant strain on arrival test.

The other is a 36-year-old woman who arrived from the United States and tested positive while under quarantine at Dorsett Hotel in Wan Chai. The CHP said she received two jabs of the BioNTech vaccine on May 2 and 23, and tested positive for antibodies on Jun 29.

There were five preliminary positive cases, including one involving a 32-year-old man who lives in Sea View Mansion at 82-87 Connaught Road West who was found to carry the L452R strain.

His residential building was put under overnight lockdown as a precaution.

The patient traveled to the US on Jul 25 and returned to Hong Kong on Aug 5 via Doha on flight QR818.  His pre-departure tests conducted on Jul 24 in Hong Kong and Aug 5 in the US both had negative results.

But his specimen collected on arrival at HK International Airport on Aug 6 tested preliminary positive. Further tests conducted at the Department of Health’s laboratory showed he carries the L452R mutant strain. He is asymptomatic.

CHP’s investigation showed the patient had received two doses of the BioNTech vaccine on Apr 7 and 28 in Hong Kong, and tested positive for antibodies on Jul 19.

The patient’s office at 40-44 Bonham Strand, Sheung Wan and various places he visited from Jul 15 to 25 have been put under compulsory testing notice.

Meanwhile, the CHP said it received notification of a confirmed case in Japan, involving a 29-year-old woman who left Hong Kong on Jul 29 for Japan via flight CX520.

Sample taken from her on arrival test was found positive for Covid-19 and she remains asymptomatic.

Following the report, her place of residence in Discovery Bay and her office at Unit 2107, 21/F, Tower A, Mira Place, 132 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui have been put under a compulsory testing notice.
