HK suspends Emirates Airlines after flying in 3 infected people

It's the second suspension for the Emirates flight in two months

Hong Kong authorities have banned flight EK384 operated by Emirates Arilines from flying in from Dubai for the next two weeks, after three of its passengers tested positive on their arrival tests.

The Centre for Health Protection said in a statement today, Oct 27, that the three passengers had taken the flight which originated from Bangkok, Thailand, then on to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before arriving in Hong Kong on Oct. 25.

The infected passengers are a 10-year-old girl, a 16-year-old male and a 40-year-old female. The two females both tested positive for the L452R mutant strain, while the test result on the male patient is pending.

This is the second suspension meted on EK384 within a two-month period. It was also suspended from flying into Hong Kong on Aug 24, after five of its passengers tested positive on arrival test.

Two other confirmed cases were reported today, involving people who arrived from the United States.

They include a 77-year-old woman who flew in on KE607 from the US via Korea on Oct 23, and was in quarantine in Kerry Hotel in Hung Hom, and a 54-year-old male cargo flight crew who came via CX075 on Oct 25 and tested positive on arrival test.

The woman’s viral load was insufficient for testing for mutant strains, while the man’s test result is pending.

The new cases took Hong Kong’s total Covid-19 tally to 12, 335 confirmed cases.

According to the CHP, the air crew left Hong Kong for the US on Oct 21 and returned on Oct 25. His test result in Hong Kong on Oct 19 was negative, but his specimen collected upon his arrival at the airport tested positive.

As he was in Hong Kong during the incubation period, the places where he resided and visited here have been included in a compulsory testing notice. People who were at these places during specified periods must undergo testing on or before tomorrow, Oct 28.
