Separately, the Centre for Health Protection has put a residential child care centre in Mong Kok on compulsory testing notice, after 32 children in the facility were reported as having developed upper respiratory tract infection, or URTI.

The children, comprising 21 boys and 11 girls, aged one to three years, old, developed fever, cough, and runny nose since Nov. 5. Twenty-one sought medical attention, and two required hospitalization. All are in stable condition.

Officers of the child care centre have been advised to take infection control measures against respiratory illnesses, while the facility has been put under medical surveillance.

URTI has been reported in several kindergartens and child care facilities since the start of the year. Most of the affected children did not require hospitalization, but many suffered from fever and other flu-like symptoms.

To guard against influenza and other illnesses, people are advised to take seasonal flu shots, maintain good personal hygiene, avoid touching the eyes, mouth and nose, wash hands frequently or use alcohol-based handrub, and maintain good indoor ventilation.

Anyone who shows signs of URTI should wear a surgical mask to prevent transmission, cover the nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, refrain from going to work or attending school, avoid crowded places and seek prompt medical advice.
