Lakad kawanggawa, lakad biyaya

Posted on 18 May 2019 No comments

“I was touched by the sad plight of students and teachers in Maytaraw so we decided to push the hike to help them kahit papaano,” sabi ni Alona na naniniwala daw sa sinabi ni Marianne Moore na, “The heart that gives, gathers.”

Dagdag ni Cheryl: “I have been hiking for 10 years though irregularly.

I enjoyed hiking with them kahit hindi ko kilala yung iba. Feeling young (ako) kasi tawanan kami lagi. Maganda talaga sa kalusugan ang hiking. Doble benepisyo din sa akin kasi my body was energized and I gained new friends.”

Labatt Jolly likely to stay until Aug 11

Labor Attache Jalilo dela Torre

By Daisy CL Mandap

A provision in the Philippines’ election law appears to have thwarted an attempt to recall Labor Attache Jalilo dela Torre from Hong Kong at the end of last month.

According to Commission on Elections Resolution No 10312 dated Apr 27, 2018, the “transfer, promotion, extension, recall or otherwise movement of foreign service corps from current post or position” will not be allowed from May 13, 2018 to Aug. 11, 2019.

To prevent being covered by the election ban, the concerned government department should seek an exemption from Comelec, which however, should have been done on or before a date designated by the Commissioner in charge of overseas voting.

Call us!

The so-called “authority to recall” appears to have been overlooked by the Department of Labor so that, technically, Dela Torre will now have to remain in Hong Kong until Aug. 11.

The news that his term had been extended indefinitely was met with much rejoicing by some of the biggest Filipino migrant groups when they learned about it late on Apr. 1.

In a last-minute turnaround, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III issued a memo on this day stating that Labatt Dela Torre was to continue in his post “until further notice.”

Call us now!

The order reversed an earlier directive dated Mar 28 designating Assistant Labor Attache Antonio Villafuerte as office-in-charge at the Philippine Overseas Labor Office effective Apr 5 “until the arrival of a new Labor Attache.”

Despite the reversal to status quo, DOLE’s International Labor Affairs Bureau sent an urgent email to Consul General Antonio A. Morales on Apr 3 asking for a certification that was required by Comelec so Dela Torre could be recalled to the home office.

Call now!

But the request was apparently not met, or was no longer honored by Comelec for not meeting the deadline.

Dela Torre’s three-year tour of duty was supposed to end on Mar 31, but many Filipino community leaders had petitioned for his retention for at least six more months, the length of time he was recalled by Bello to the Home Office to respond to apparently unfounded accusations of impropriety.

Call us now!

The leaders of the petition were elated by the news Dela Torre was to stay until a replacement for him was designated, or until after the lapse of the election ban.

“To God be the glory,” said Bishop Gerry Vallo of the Global Ministers Association of Hong Kong in a chat group.

“Yes! God is really good. Ang saya saya!,” said Leo Selomenio, chair of Global Alliance.

“Yahooo…tagumpay. Napalukso ako,” said Merlinda Mercado of Metrobank and financial education speaker at POLO.

The move to get Dela Torre to stay in Hong Kong got off the ground about a week earlier, after he was issued marching orders, along with the news that he would be sent back to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he served as a deputy labor attaché in the early 2000s.

That news was not received well by Filcom leaders, as a Middle East post is rarely given to a senior labor envoy like Dela Torre, who apart from being a lawyer and administrator of note, is also well-regarded by the Filipino community in countries where he served.

Despite their misgivings, about 100 of the leaders gathered at a farewell tribute hosted in Dela Torre’s honor on Mar 25, at the invitation of Hong Kong former legislator Emily Lau and some of her fellow human rights advocates.

On Mar 27, the group submitted a copy of the petition along with some 5,000 signatures, to Consul General Antonio A. Morales, who assured them that he would immediately endorse the request to Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin.

An online petition urging Dela Torre’s extension of office was also started, and to this date, has been signed by well over 1,000 individuals, many of whom also left touching messages explaining their support for him.

Posted on No comments

Call us!

Call us now!

Call now!

Call us now!

Pinoy dancers in free ballet show on Chater Road

Pinoy dancers in free ballet show on Chater Road

By Vir B. Lumicao

Ballet, often perceived to be an entertainment of the royalty and the elite, has been brought closer to the masses of Hong Kong in a new initiative of the city’s ballet company.

On Mar 17, Part 2 of HK Ballet’s two-year “Ballet in the City Pop-Up” project, the target audience was mainly Filipino domestic workers spending their day off on Chater Road.

They were joined by Filipino residents and Western expatriates who were drawn to Central by the cultural outreach staged by the Consulate in collaboration with HK Ballet.

After Chater Road, the troupe performed on Mar 24 for the public at the Tuen Mun Yan Oi Square. In spring 2020, they will regale Indonesian workers in Victoria Park.

“We’re bringing ballet to all neighborhoods to dispel the misimpression that ballet is just for the elite. Ballet is for everybody,” artistic director Septime Webre told The SUN in an interview at the sidelines of Chater Road performance.

HK Ballet introduced ballet to the audience by starting the program at 1pm with lessons on movements on stage conducted by Webre and company dancers for young enthusiasts.

Then came the interactive session with Filipino students Dani, Jeb, Beatriz and Bess of the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, who showed basic movements and mimes.

HK Ballet’s Filipina sport practitioner Arlene MacKinlay demonstrated bending and stretching exercises that dancers have to do before and after performances to relieve pain.

The most awaited part of the outreach was the presentation of Acts 1 and 2 as well as the  Jardin Animè scene from Act 3 of “Le Corsaire” (French for “The Pirate”), in which Filipino dancers Coryphee Garry Corpuz and Luis Cabrera play leading roles.

Call now!

HK Ballet describes Le Corsaire as “a swashbuckling tale of dashing pirates, bumbling pashas and beautiful harem girls” based on Lord Byron’s poem “The Corsair”.

Corpuz, 25, and Cabrera, 26, graduates of the Philippine High School for the Arts on Mt Makiling, have won the admiration of their Cuban-American artistic director.

“Oh, I love to work with them. They dance with great passion, energy and openness, and they’re very disciplined and serious about their work,” Webre said.

Call us!

Webre, who moved to HK Ballet a year and a half ago after 17 years as artistic director of Washington Ballet, said he would love to recruit more Filipino danseurs though he hasn’t been to the Philippines yet. “But I hope to see more of them in some auditions,” he said.

Corpuz plays Lankendem, the slave trader who supplies harem women to patrons, while Cabrera portrays Birbanto, the right-hand man of leading man Conrad the pirate.

Corpuz, 25, said in interview after the show that he auditioned for a slot at HK Ballet and was signed up more than two years ago on a yearly contract. The lanky Cabrera, 26, who has been working in Hong Kong for six years, said he joined HK Ballet four years ago.

The OFWs of an artistic kind said they love Hong Kong for the professional exposure they get here, not to mention the salary, which helps their families back home.

They also get to join tours abroad, such as in Canada and New York last year. They will be in Shanghai this year, then return to the US and Canada, before heading to South America.

Among the projects lined up for them are three different types of ballet, as well as Peter Pan, Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker.

Consul Roderico Atienza, an avid fan of ballet and the man behind the outreach, said it had taken the Consulate and HK Ballet more than a year to work on the project.

“This outreach represents further efforts we have been seeing in the last couple of years from various sectors of Hong Kong society reaching out to FDHs as an integral part of what makes Hong Kong what it is,” Atienza said.
