Fourteen new HIV and 2 new Aids cases among Filipinos in Hong Kong were recorded last year, the Centre for Health
Protection of the Department of Health said on Wednesday, Feb 26.
“Similar to the general epidemiology in Hong
Kong , the major cause of HIV infection among Filipinos is sexual
transmission,” a CHP spokesman said.
The Health Department has no record of the occupation of the
reported cases, he said.
The 14 Filipinos were among 565 cases of human immunodeficiency virus infection that were reported to the CHP last year, compared with 624 in 2018, the spokesman said.

Six of the new cases last year were male, double from the count in 2018, while 8 were female, down from 9 in the previous year, the spokesman said.
There were two male and female Filipino Aids cases last year,
compared with 3 females recorded in 2018.

He urged members of the public to use condoms consistently and properly so as to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV.
“Despite a decrease in the number of reports of
HIV infection in recent years when compared to the peak in 2015, a concentrated
epidemic among vulnerable groups, such as young men who have sex with men,
warrants our sustained attention,” he said.
Of the 565 HIV cases reported last year, 479 males and 86 females, 331 acquired the infection via homosexual or bisexual contact, 128 via heterosexual contact, five via drug injection and two via perinatal infection.
