Carnate passed on at Buddhist Hospital early on Tuesday |
A Filipina domestic worker who had worked in Hong Kong for just over two years has succumbed to lung cancer.
Winnie Maddawin Carnate, 45, passed away at 7am on Tuesday, Jul 13 at the Buddhist Hospital in Lok Fu.

She was a single mother to her young son and hailed from San Ramon, Isabela.
Records at the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration show Carnate was first deployed on Feb 14, 2019. She worked for her employer who lives on Heng Lam Street in Lok Fu.

But according to one of her friends and fellow
domestic worker, Christy Florendo, Carnate had worked in Hong Kong previously
but had to go home after getting sick, and was released by her employer.
According to OWWA welfare officer Virsie Tamayao, their regional office in Tuguegarao has been informed about Carnate’s death, and they would in turn talk to the family as to who would claim her remains.

Tamayao said Carnate’s employer would visit the
assistance to nationals section on Thursday for a briefing on the procedure and
requirements for repatriation.

Florendo, who is helping the deceased’s family in coordinating with the Consulate and OWWA on repatriation, said Carnate’s elder brother, Woody, would receive the body when it arrives in the Philippines.

She said a flight had already been booked for flying
home Carnate’s remains although the documentation process, including obtaining
the medical and death certificate, has yet to be initiated.

Florendo said that if possible, the family would want
a wake held for Carnate in Hong Kong so her friends here can say a final
goodbye before her remains are flown home to the Philippines.
