This is the second time staff at the US Consulate tests positive for Covid-19

The United States Consulate General in Hong Kong will close tomorrow, Jul 6, after one of its staff members tested preliminary positive for Covid-19.

A statement posted on the US Consulate’s website confirms the report, but says, “the employee in question does not work in an office that interacts with the public.”

Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection has yet to issue a statement on the case.

If confirmed, this will be the first local case in Hong Kong in 28 days, after the case of a female cleaner who worked parttime in a designated quarantine hotel was today reclassified as epidemiologically linked with an imported case.

The CHP said in a statement that genetic sequencing of case 11937 showed it to be linked to an imported case (11920), a new arrival from Indonesia who was found to carry the variant. The local patient had carried out cleaning work in the room that had just been vacated by the imported case.

Only one imported case was reported today, involving an 18-year-old male patient who had just arrived from the United Kingdom. He was asymptomatic, but tested positive while in quarantine at the Regal Airport Hotel in Chek Lap Kok.

CHP also reported Hong Kong’s first death from Covid-19 in months.

The death of a Covid-19 patient at Kwong Wah Hospital is the first to be recorded in months

The 78-year-old male patient with chronic illness passed away at Kwong Wah Hospital at 8:35pm Sunday night, after being listed in critical condition for some time.

In a statement, CHP said the elderly patient was admitted to the hospital for treatment on Dec 4, 2020 after testing positive for Covid-19. He was released from isolation last Dec 23 after he tested negative.

However, the patient’s condition deteriorated, and he eventually succumbed last night.

His death brought Hong Kong’s death toll from Covid-19 to 204.

As at 9am today, one confirmed patient was discharged from hospital in the last 24 hours. So far, a total of 11 638 patients with confirmed or probable infection have been discharged.

A total of 59 confirmed patients remain hospitalised in 13 public hospitals and the North Lantau Hospital Hong Kong Infection Control Centre. Among them, one is in serious condition while the remaining 58 patients are stable.

In the past 14 days, a total of 56 confirmed cases have been reported, including three linked to imported cases.
