HK’s infection tally drops to 4,123 but deaths rise to 11

02 August 2022

10 of today's fatalities were aged 65 and above, and only 2 completed 3 vaccine jabs

Health authorities on Tuesday expressed concern about the rise in the number of deaths among patients who test positive for Covid-19, as the city recorded 11 new fatalities.

Speaking at the daily conference, Dr Lau Ka-hin of the Hospital Authority said that the number of deaths each day has increased, compared to about a month ago.

"In early July, there were only a few (death) cases per day, one to two, or two to three. But in the recent week, there were an average of five to six deaths per day. Last Tuesday, we had 10. Today we have 11," Lau said.

This means, according to him, that the continuing rise in the number of infections in the community has led to an increasing proportion of patients falling seriously or critically ill, and some of them may die.

Official figures, however, show that the fatality rate remains at 0.7 percent.

The latest fatalities comprised four males and seven females aged 22 months to 96 years old. Except for the toddler whose death was announced yesterday, all the deceased were aged 65 and above, and only two completed three vaccine doses.

They took the number of deaths in the fifth wave to 9,307.

The authorities also reported an additional 4,123 Covid infections, including 234 that were imported.

The countries where at least 15 infected patients had come from were: India, 30; United Kingdom, 26; United States, 22; Philippines, 21; Singapore, 18; Thailand and Malaysia, 15 each.

A total of 1,536 are now receiving care in public hospitals, after 171 additional patients were admitted overnight.

Separately, Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection said the government is talking to BioNTech about obtaining its Covid vaccine for young children, after learning from experts that it’s not feasible to dilute adult doses.

Infants as young as six months can get the same dose as adults of the Sinovac vaccine but they must be given only one-tenth of the adult dose for BioNTech.

One of the government’s pandemic advisers, Prof David Hui, said studies have shown that the BioNTech vaccine does not result in serious side effects in young children, such as myocarditis, or death.

For the Sinovac vaccine, the side effects that have been reported were mainly local, such as pain on the injection site, fever, cough, diarrhea and vomiting.

The Health Department announced earlier today that it approved experts’ recommendation that the age for receiving a Covid vaccine be lowered to six months from the previous three years old.

Young children between six and three months can get jabs starting at 9am on Thursday, Aug 4.

On the same day, people aged 50 to 59 who have received three doses can also get the fourth dose of either BioNTech or Sinovac if they received their last jab at least three months earlier.

Those qualified for a vaccine can make reservations online via the booking system for the vaccination and get their jabs at community vaccination centers or designated clinics.
