The Covid tally has remained at around 10,000 in the past few days

Hong Kong’s daily Covid-19 tally breached the 10,000 mark again on Wednesday, with 16 related deaths.

According to Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection, 10,030 local infections  were recorded yesterday, along with 164 imported cases, for a total tally of 10,194.

At the same time, health authorities announced the extension of the current social distancing measures for another two weeks.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

This means, no more than four people may gather together in public, though up to eight people may sit together in restaurants.

For large-scale banquets, or that where more than eight people are allowed to sit together, all guests and staff must present a negative result for a rapid test taken within 24 hours.

Among the death cases, ten are believed to have been due directly to the coronavirus, while the rest died from unrelated ailments although they did test positive for the virus.

They included the youngest patient, a 47-year-old man who did not show any sign of pneumonia but was declared dead on arrival at Queen Mary Hospital. He had no known chronic ailment and tested positive on a rapid antigen test at the hospital.

The other deceased patients comprised 12 men and four women aged up to 99 years old. Nine received three vaccine shots while the seven others either had incomplete, or no vaccination at all.

Chuang also said 1,361 cases were reported from 799 schools involving 1,140 students and 221 faculty members.

One school, Malvern College in Tai Po, had all of its 26 primary grade classes suspended for a week after 30 students and five staff from various grades tested positive for the virus.

A total of 2,870 patients are now receiving treatment in public hospitals, after 342 were admitted yesterday while 349 of those who recovered were discharged.
