Filipino accused in Wanchai stabbing fails in bail bid

Eastern Court magistrate denied bail, citing seriousness of the case and strong evidence vs accused

A Filipino construction worker who is accused of slashing the face and head of a fellow Filipino in Wanchai 12 days ago failed in his attempt to apply for bail at Eastern Court today, Friday.

Through his duty lawyer, Romeo D. Miranda offered to post cash bail of $3,000, surrender his passport and report regularly to any police station. He said he just wanted to see his three-year-old son and five-year-old daughter again.

The lawyer also pointed to Miranda’s wife who was in the dock, looking pained, while the court proceedings were going on.

However, the prosecution opposed the bail application.

After considering the application for a few minutes, Principal Magistrate Ada Yim decided to reject it, saying the court “did not see any material change in the circumstances of the case.”

The magistrate also said it was necessary to continue keeping the accused behind bars so he could not commit another offence or interfere with the witnesses.

She also cited the seriousness of the case and the strength of the evidence against the accused.

Miranda was arrested along with Filipino driver Delfin D. Villaremo, 55, two days after they allegedly attacked two other men outside the Tai Wo Street Playground in Wanchai in the evening of Oct. 9.

The injured men were taken to Ruttonjee Hospital while their attackers fled.

The defendants were arrested separately in the morning of Oct. 11 and charged in court two days later.

Miranda was charged with wounding for allegedly using a kitchen knife to stab and slash Benson Jy Mateo Agunoy.

Villaremo was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm for allegedly attacking William L. Maun at the same place.

At their initial court appearance, Villaremo was allowed to post bail for $1,000 on condition that he would report to police as required, surrender his passport, and would not leave Hong Kong.

Miranda was remanded in jail custody as he did not apply for bail then.
