This whitening cream was found to contain harmful levels of mercury

The Centre for Health Protection has cautioned the public against using two whitening products found to contain excessive mercury, which could damage the nervous system and kidneys.

The warning came after CHP was notified by the Hospital Authority of two cases of suspected mercury poisoning involving two female patients aged 39 and 43.

A statement issued by the CHP said the patients had reported using two different products under the brand name “Goree” – namely, “Goree Day and Night Beauty Cream Oil Free” and “Goree Beauty Cream with Lycopene, Avocado & Aloevera.”

Both products are widely available online, and are sold in many places, including Hong Kong and the Philippines.

The patients were found to have proteinuria, or the presence of excess proteins in urine, after admission to hospital. They had reported using the two products for several months.

Their urine samples showed a mercury level higher than the reference level, which were suspected to be related to their use of the named products.

Testing conducted by the HA revealed there is excessive mercury in the Goree Day and Night Cream Oil Free while the testing of the other Goree product is still ongoing.

"Chronic exposure to mercury can cause damage to the nervous system and kidneys. Symptoms may include tremors, irritability, insomnia, memory deterioration, concentration difficulty, impaired hearing and vision, and change in the taste function. In severe cases, renal failure may occur," said the CHP.

"People who are using these products should stop immediately and consult healthcare professionals as soon as possible if they feel unwell or are in doubt.”

The CHP said its investigation is continuing, but have referred the cases to the relevant law enforcement agency for follow-up.
