If you enter Hong Kong as a tourist, you can never take up any work, paid or unpaid. If you get caught doing illegal work, you will most likely serve time in prison.
This was the lesson learned by a 49-year-old woman
from the mainland who got into Hong Kong
as a tourist in November 2023, but took the chance to work as a masseuse.

After the woman was arrested for overstaying for 14 months,
police noticed during questioning that she had a large amount of cash with her.
Subsequent investigations revealed she had worked as a masseuse at various massage parlors during her overstay, for which
she received $50 to $100 each session.
The suspect was taken to the Shatin Magistracy on
Jan. 23, and was formally charged with doing illegal work, breaching her limit
of stay, and overstaying her visa.

She pleaded guilty to all charges, and was
immediately sentenced to 15 months in jail.
A statement issued by Immigration said the suspect’s
employer is still being investigation, and that it cannot rule out the
possibility of further arrests.
