Fate back in fighting form with 11-0 crushing of Feliz

Filipino softball team Fate, returning to the pitch after a long break due to the pandemic, resumed their campaign in the Hong Kong Women’s Softball League with a murderous 11-0 win in six innings over Chinese team Feliz on Mar 21.

The victory on the Shek Kip Mei diamond is significant for Fate, the only Philippine softball team in the city, as the Hong Kong Softball Association’s reopening of pitches to continue games postponed last year due to the coronavirus contagion.

To the Filipinas, the triumph is a much-needed shot in the arm after they lost by just a point in their last game against local squadron Artemis on the same field in November.

Fate captain and pitcher Don Gaborno encouraged her all-domestic helper team to focus on the match and prove it wasn’t yet over for them after that loss to Artemis.

When the game got under way, Fate took an early lead as spirited play by the Filipinas long sidelined by the pitch closure showed their local rivals were the underdog.

In the first inning, the Filipinas scores three home runs courtesy of Percy Jayme, Sierra May Tebia and Chelo Garbo.

They added three home runs in the third inning through Tebia, Garbo and Don Gaborno for a 6-0 score at the end of third inning. 

Gaborno’s vaunted fast ball pitch combined with the tight defense of infielders and outfielders to make sure Fate won’t give their opponents a chance to get to home base.

Josel Ondrade added another run in the fourth inning to make the score 7-0 for Fate.

Editha Hidalgo and Bambee Abadilla also produced a run each in the fifth inning, lifting the score to 9-0.

In the last and final inning, Tebia and Garbo made two more home runs that ended the game with a total score of 11.

Fate is now on its 8th year since joining the Hong Kong Softball Association.

With the help and support of their team manager Law Wai Ho, a respected veteran in Hong Kong softball, Fate continues to reap pride for him and for Filipinos in the sport. 

Fate players have made softball their priority on Sundays, their rest day, by going to the pitch early to practice and get ready for the match.

Artemis ladies squeak past all-Pinay softball team Fate, 12-11

Fate's just too happy to be back on the pitch despite the initial setback

 

Filipino softball team Fate set the pace as they returned to the Shek Kip Mei pitch on Sunday afternoon, Nov 22, against local squadron Artemis, but luck eluded them as they lost 11-12 in their first game after a long lay-off.

The 3pm match followed a 10-month closure of the pitch as one of several safety measures the Hong Kong government had imposed to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Fate’s all-Filipina domestic helper team were full of enthusiasm when the Hong Kong Softball Association reopened the field for the 2019-2020 season.

Siera May Tebia, batting for away team Fate, started the game with a fly ball that was caught by local pitcher Mok Yin Yau. Second batter Maribel Sitchon then hit a short infield ball that allowed her to run to the first base.

Daisy Maano also struck an infielder for a dash to first base as base runner Sitchon ran to the second. Then an error by Artemis’ catcher drove the two base runners to the next base.

Fourth batter Chelo Garbo also sent the ball flying, but she was caught on a pass ball by the Artemis pitcher to the first baseman. Sitchon sprinted to the third base when Josel Ondrade whacked the ball and ran to the first base.

 

At Percy Jayme’s turn, she smashed an outfield ball that took her safely through the first and second bases while base runners Sitchon and Ondrade ran safely to the home base.

Jayme was the third Fater to run home on hits by Jonalyn Cupag and Belinda Ganitano.

Bambee Abadilla hit a long ball for a dash to the second base that sent Cupag running to the home base. Ganitano was stuck on the third as the inning ended with Fate ahead 5-0.

The locals took their chances when new Fate player Garbo took the pitching stand in their first inning. They scored four home runs courtesy of Pang Po-mau, Lai Wing-suan, Siu Wing-chi and Mok Yin-yau to end the inning 5-4 for Fate.

In the second inning, Fate gave their opponents no room to score. 

Before Artemis started their inning, Fate captain Don Gaborno called for substitution and reshuffled her players. She took over pitching and caught two locals standing out with her fast ball.

Still, Artemis managed to add three home runs through Pang, Siu and Mok that put them ahead of the Filipinas, 7-5, at the close of the second inning. 

In the third inning, Fate added five home runs through Garbo, Ondrade, Jayme, Gaborno and Tebia, while they limited Artemis to two courtesy of Ho Ping-ting and Cho Suet. Fate was back in front, 10-9, at the end of the inning. 

Fate took their last chance to nail the match in the fourth, but Jayme scored a run. The locals then scuttled the Filipinas’ tight defense to add three runs via Leung Wing-yau, Yeung Tan and Ho Pai-ting that ended the match 12-11 for Artemis.

Divas foil Lantau Ladies in first cricket league match in 9 months

Divas lords over their rivals in their first match after a 9-month break due to the pandemic

All-Filipina cricket team SCC Divas overtook Lantau Ladies, 92/2 in their Hong Kong Women’s Main League Division 2 game on Oct 4 to win their first T20 cricket encounter after a long lay-off due to the pandemic.

Divas captain Josie Arimas expressed relief and joy with the victory, as her team had only limited time to practice before the encounter.

“Nag-start kami ng training only three Sundays ago with only two hours per session, not enough for training. We need more training talaga,” Arimas said.

Playing under a new coach, Divas’ first batters Jennifer Alumbro and Jonna Eguid scored 63 runs in the second innings as they set the pace for the chase of the 91/7 first innings lead that the Lantau Ladies produced in 19.5 overs.

Then Christine Joy Lovino and Romela Osabel combined for 29 runs in 10.4 overs to seal the victory for Divas, the first-ever Philippine women’s cricket team formed three years ago by Arimas.

The match was scheduled for two and a half hours but shortened to 75 minutes by the Divas, who returned to the pitch after a forced nine-month halt to the annual league as Hong Kong battled the coronavirus contagion.

Arimas, who is also captain of the first women’s cricket National Team that lost to Indonesia in an international competition in Dasmariñas City last December, described the match at Po Kong Village Road Sports Centre in Diamond Hill as tense.

“Ang dami naming extras sa first game, medyo tense pero OK lang. Ganyan lang pag first match after nine months na na-stuck kami dahil na-stop ang league,” Arimas said.

The Divas captain said the team has 29 players and two new trainees. She said the teams need more training following the long furlough.

The triumph was also a first by the all-domestic helper team under their new Nepalese coach, Sher Lama, a former player of the Hong Kong National Men’s Team.

Also at the pitch to share their jubilation were SCC Divas manager Animesh Kulkarni and assistant manager Chandra Prameswaran.

Aside from the team that defeated the Lantau Ladies, the Filipinas have formed two teams, SCC Divas and SCC Pinay, in the Women’s Development League that opens this Sunday, Arimas said.

She said SCC Pinay will play against Craigengower Cricket Club at 9 am and SCC Divas will face Cavaliers at 2 pm.

The victory was Divas’ first in a five-team round robin in the main league Division 2 T20 tournament. The Filipinas will also play in the T10 tournament where they will face eight teams including the strongest.

OFW cricketers to power PHL national team in intl tournament

Divas captain Josie Arimas will lead the Phl national team in its first international competition

Nine players of SCC Divas, the first ever Filipina cricket team outside the Philippines, will leave for Manila on Dec 19 to play for the National Team that will face Indonesia in a four-match T20 international in Cavite on Dec 21-22.

The Divas contingent, comprising Hong Kong-based domestic workers, will form the backbone of the country’s first cricket Women’s National Team that will be playing its maiden international match on Dec 21.

Divas captain Josie Arimas said in an interview on Dec 4 that the rest of the players in the National Team, which number no more than 14, were chosen from relatively young women’s cricket teams in the country.

As of this writing, the Philippine Cricket Association, which invited the Divas players to join the National Team, has not yet announced who will captain the country’s squad.

Other Divas stalwarts on the team are Jennifer Alumbro, Jonna Eguid, Romela Osabel, Cherry Octaviano, Christen Joy Lovino, Catherine Bagaoisan, Ma Luz Madia and Rosaly Pagarigan.

Arimas said these former softball, baseball and volleyball players are strong in both bowling and batting.

They are mostly pioneers of the Divas team that Arimas formed two years ago and captured the crown in their maiden appearance in Cricket Hong Kong’s Development League in the 2018 season.

Arimas said the Philippine National Team will be facing a big challenge because Indonesia is strong. She said the results of the competition will count in the cricket world rankings for women.

The Philippine and Indonesian teams will play two 20-over, or T20, matches on Dec 21 and another two on Dec 22. All four games will be played on the PCA cricket field in Dasmariñas, about 50 kilometers or 2 hours ride from Nino Aquino International Airport.  

“Underdog kami. Ang Indonesia ay pang-22 sa ICC T20 women’s rankings samantalang kami ay ngayon pa lang sasali,” said Arimas.

There are 55 countries in the roster of the International Cricket Council, cricket’s world governing body, with the Philippine men’s team occupying 20^th place in the international T20 league.

Arimas said air tickets of some of the Divas players will be paid by their employers as the competition coincides with their annual vacation. But those who are flying to Manila just for the tournament will pay for their own tickets.

She said the Divas players on the National Team will no longer be able to play in Hong Kong’s Development League, a division for new teams or sides that need to improve their performance before rejoining the big league.

Upto was founded on June 22, 2014 by blackbelts Jacinto, Padua, Permales and Evangeline Sia Gocuay, who has since left Hong Kong for good. Since then, the three remaining founders have worked their way up the ranking ladder, with all three now holders of a 3^rd Dan Black Belt, and members of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).

Over the past seven years, the group has produced 24 WTF black belts, and most of them are Upto members. But since the organization has grown slowly, the founders decided to lessen the number of officers and give all active Black Belt members the chance to focus and become future instructors of Upto.

Winning UPTO members display the medals they won in the contest

The ploy appeared to have worked because straight from the oath-taking 11 Upto members won medals in the 17th Hong Kong Nepalese Taekwondo Association Open Kyorugy and Poomsae Championship 2019, held at the Kowloon Park Sports Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui.

The winners were part of a 20-strong delegation from Upto that competed in nine different belt categories in the poomsae competition. More than 10 organizations and clubs participated in the event.
