Filipina helpers mourn death of British hiker they called ‘Big Brother’

Posted on 08 October 2021 No comments

Bowerman with Depio (flashing V sign) and another Filipina in one of their hikes

A handful of Filipina domestic helpers who are close hiking buddies of British product designer Julian Bowerman are in mourning, two days after his body was found in a ravine in Lantau.

Bowerman, 51, apparently fell off a cliff while hiking alone on the Crouching Dragon Trail in the island on Oct. 2. As he lived alone in Kennedy Town, the alarm on him being lost was sent out only four days later by his wife, who is based in Taiwan.

At about 3:15pm on the day he disappeared, Bowerman sent out a WhatsApp message to a friend from near the Lantau Cable Car, saying, “I am going on a hike called Crouching Dragon. It has a steep climb at the end. I may not do this part…we will see.”

Call now!

That was the last time anyone heard from him.

But just a day before, or on Oct 1, which was a statutory holiday, the friendly Englishman went hiking with his Filipina friends to Green Egg Island where they had fun in the sea and on the rocks.

The next day, Bowerman asked the group if they planned to go hiking again, but none of the five women who went out with him to the hills regularly could go because they were at work.

Bowerman said that in that case he would go to Crouching Dragon solo. As he used to do before he met them, said one member of the group, Merly B. Depio.

PRESS FOR DETAILS!

“We’ve been crying for the past two days. We are his companions whenever he went hiking, so, we would like to see his remains for the last time,” Depio said in a message.

Depio said her bereaved group wants to pay their last respects to “Sir Julian,” who they met in early this year and fondly called their Big Brother. But they don’t know who to ask for permission to visit his remains.

Bowerman is known for sharing his food and showing concern for his Filipina friends

Bowerman’s wife lives in Taiwan while his parents and sister are in Britain. Reports said he worked as a product designer at SUGA Electronics and was studying for his Master’s Degree at the School of Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He had been in Hong Kong for five years.

After he lost contact with his family, his wife asked his friends in Hong Kong to help look for him, then finally reported the case at 1:42am on Oct. 6. A search and rescue operation was launched early that day from Wong Lung Hang in Lantau.

With help from the government flying service, his badly decomposed body was found at about 5pm that day. It was airlifted and rushed to Pamela Youde Nethersole Hospital in Chai Wan, where Bowerman was declared dead.

Months before his death, Bowerman met his closest Filipina hiker-friend,  Maria Chona A. Dondiog, who in turn introduced him to other Filipina hikers.

Dondiog said in a message that she met Bowerman while hiking with another friend, Maria Rose L. Santos, on Jan 31 this year. The Briton mentioned that he lived near Hong Kong University, and as Dondiog lived in Pok Fu Lam, they began hiking together every Sunday.

“He was a very good man and kind man. I considered him a Big Brother who was very supportive and very respectful. He was very friendly to all of us, that’s why we loved being with him. Everybody wanted to befriend him,” Dondiog said.

“That’s why we are in grief after hearing that our dear hiking buddy is gone. Our only wish now is to see him one last time,” she said.

The Filipinas have hundreds of photos with their newfound friend, who would always go out hiking with them and share with his wife pictures of his fun time with them.

One time, the Filipinas asked Bowerman if his wife wasn’t jealous seeing him going out with other women and he answered: “My wife is a well educated person. She trusts me, that’s why I will never break her trust.”

Bowerman shared pictures of his hiking exploits with the Filipinas with his wife

The Filipinas describe Julian as a respectable man and a true gentleman.

“Every time we were on the hiking trails, he would never leave us alone. He always waited for us and made sure that we were safe. He would often offer his help. He always smiled and told us about his adventures, his sister’s adventures in different countries. He told us a story about his sister’s adventure climbing Mt Everest,” Depio said.

She also said Bowerman often shared his food with the group and showed concern about their work.

“He would keep on asking if we were enjoying our adventures. He was always worried if we went home because our employers might nag us. He was a very talkative man who made us laugh all the time,” Depio said.

This past summer, the group had gone stream hiking with him. They had been to Pingnam Stream, Wangchung Stream, Qingdai Stream, Infinity Waterfalls, Rock Pool, Brides Pool, Mirror Waterfalls, to name a few of the spots they had hiked.

“That’s why we were all shocked when we heard the news that Sir Julian fell off a high cliff on Crouching Dragon. We are in mourning over his sudden death. We’d like to see him for the last time, if only the British Consulate would allow us to pay tribute to him,” Depio said.

Depio said before he met their group, Bowerman used to go hiking alone.

“We feel his loss because Sir Julian was very good to us despite his being a British. Never did he disrespect us or take us for granted,” Depio said with fondness and grief.

She said that hiking will never be the same again now that their Big Brother is gone.

Sister of FDH culprit in $14.6 million jewelry theft to stand trial

By Vir B. Lumicao

Biala covers her face while being pursued by reporters outside court

A District Court trial has been set for Jan 10 next year for Marina G. Biala, sister of a Filipina domestic helper who was jailed for nearly five years for stealing $14.6 million worth of jewelry from her employers in Deepwater Bay.

Judge Anthony Kwok today, Oct 7, set the two-day trial after being told by Biala’s counsel that she would plead not guilty to a charge of handling stolen goods. Biala had kept a bag containing $4.81 million that her younger sister, Carmelita D. Nones, had entrusted to her.

On Sept 7, Nones was sentenced to four years and 11 months after admitting six counts of stealing more than 200 pieces of jewelry and gold nuggets between May 2018 and September 2019 belonging to her employer David Liang and wife Helen Frances Liang.

Call now!

Her co-accused, niece Maricris G. Nones and cousin Cristina G. Alagna who helped pawn the stolen jewelry, also pleaded guilty to four and six counts, respectively, of handling stolen goods, and were each jailed one year and four months.

Biala, who had earlier indicated she would deny the charge against her, was allowed to post $10,000 cash bail on Jun 24 by Judge W.K. Kwok, despite the prosecution’s objections.

Kwok also approved a $10,000 surety posted by Biala’s employer and let her stay in his address. As in previous hearings, the employer accompanied Biala.

PRESS FOR DETAILS!

Upon leaving the court today, Biala tried to evade reporters who tried to photograph her, while her employer tried to stop them taking pictures of her.

Barrister Frederic C. Whitehouse, who is representing Biala through Legal Aid, said outside the courtroom he would try to get the prosecution to drop the charge against his client, although he added that was unlikely to happen.

The prosecution said on Jun 7 that a day after Nones was arrested on Sept 4, 2019, Biala was escorted by her employer, to the Liang couple’s house in Deepwater Bay, to return the bag containing the stolen jewelry.

Inside the bag were 23 necklaces, 3 bracelets, 11 pairs of earrings, a single earring, 1 brooch, 11 pendants, 5 rings, 3 watches, 2 bangles, some Chanel jewelry worth a total of $120,000 and costume jewelry valued at $3,000, all belonging to Mrs Liang.

But four lai see packets that had contained $4,000 cash were empty.

Biala told the court on Jun 24 that she didn’t know what the bag contained.

Indonesian DH with ‘re-positive case’ one of 6 new Covid infections today

Posted on 06 October 2021 No comments

By The SUN

The helper moved to her employer's house in Heng Fa Chuen after her quarantine

Six new Covid-19 infections were reported today, Oct 6, including an Indonesian foreign domestic helper previously reported as having tested preliminary positive and whose case has now been classified as “re-positive.”

Staff at the Health Department said the classification was based on a set of factors, and not on any record of the patient testing positive for the coronavirus previously.

Call now!

The other cases include two unvaccinated male sea crew from Ukraine, aged 27 and 29, who arrived on Oct 4 and were found to carry the L452R strain of the coronavirus.

Two others flew in from Pakistan on the same date via EK 384.

PRESS FOR DETAILS!

A 49-year-old man reported having symptoms on the day of his arrival in Hong Kong, and was tested positive for the L452R strain at the airport. He was fully vaccinated with Sinovac in Pakistan.

The other passenger is a 34-year-old man who was asymptomatic and also tested positive for Covid-19 on his arrival test. He is asymptomatic, and received two jabs of Sinovac in India. The result of his test for variants is still pending.

The sixth patient is a 50-year-old air crew from Russia who arrived on Oct 5 via flight F7-H119. He developed symptoms on Sept 30 and received two Sputnik jabs in Russia. His test result for the presence of variants is pending.

Meanwhile, the 43-year-old Indonesian DH reportedly tested negative for Covid-19 on Oct 5, but positive the previous day, the 30th day since she arrived in Hong Kong. On Oct 3 her test result was indeterminate so she was sent to the hospital for observation and further testing.

The helper arrived on Sept 4 from Indonesia via flight CX2780 and stayed at Silka Tsuen Wan hotel. Her specimen sample taken on arrival at the airport tested negative, as well as five samples taken from her during quarantine.

An antibody test conducted on her at the hospital had a positive result. Records showed she had two jabs of the Sinovac vaccine in Indonesia on Jul 19 and Aug 16.

“After examining the epidemiological, clinical and laboratory findings, this case is considered compatible with a re-positive case,” said a statement from the Centre for Health Department.

Despite this, her employer’s residential block in Heng Fa Chuen, Chai Wan where the helper moved after quarantine has been put under a compulsory testing notice, as well as Victoria Park in Causeway Bay, as she had been there on Oct 1 and 3.

But during another test on Monday she was found positive, but with a low viral load. This would have meant she couldn’t be tested for a coronavirus variant.

Subsequent tests also showed she had antibodies for Covid-19. She remains asymptomatic

Records also showed she had two doses of the Sinovac vaccine in Indonesia before coming to Hong Kong.
