Courtyard Marriott Hotel will charge $650 a night, booking to start Nov 15
The Hong Kong Labour Department has announced that from Dec 8, the Courtyard by Marriott Hong Kong in Sha Tin will be added as a designated quarantine facility for incoming foreign domestic helpers.

Labour said booking for the rooms at Marriott Shatin will start at 9:30am on Monday, Nov. 15 through www.marriott.com/HKGST. The hotel will charge $650 a night,  inclusive of three meals, for a total cost of $13,650 for the 21-day quarantine.

A total of 500 rooms at Marriott Shatin will be allotted for vaccinated FDHs coming to work in Hong Kong. This is on top of the 800 rooms set aside for them at Penny’s Bay Quarantine Centre and the 500 at Rambler Garden Hotel in Tsing Yi.

Call now!

Marriott Shatin will replace Silka Tsuen Wan hotel as the third DQF for helpers. Silka, which charges the most at $800 a day, had only about 400 rooms set aside for the incoming workers.

According to Labour, Silka Tsuen Wan will be used for other quarantine purposes starting on Dec. 1.

Silka Tsuen Wan which charges $800 a night will stop being DQF at end of Nov

Anyone booking a room at any of the DQFs will need to provide the FDH’s passport copy, valid employment visa and recognized vaccination record (or yellow card for those coming from the Philippines) for verification. The FDH will also need to provide all these documents for verification upon check-in at the hotel.

PRESS FOR DETAILS!

“The hotel will adjust the number of rooms open for reservation each day having regard to the overall booking situation,” said Labour.

Its statement added that while the government understands the need of local families for FDHs, it has to balance this out with the strict policy of guarding against the importation of cases.

But it did not rule out adding more quarantine facilities for FDHs when the global and local epidemic situation eases.

Pindutin para sa detalye

As a reminder, Labour said employers and agents should only book an air ticket for their FDHs after a room has been successfully reserved in a DQF.

Failure to submit the required documents or settle the payment within the specified period will lead to the cancellation of a booking.

Payment will be refunded to the person who made the booking if the FDH tests positive for Covid-19 before arrival in Hong Kong, or because of flight cancellations by the airline, provided supporting documents are submitted in advance.

CLICK FOR DETAILS

If the check-in date is changed due to other special circumstances, the hotel will determine the merits of each case in deciding whether to refund payment.

A FDH who does not have a confirmed booking with a DQF will not be allowed to board a flight to Hong Kong or may be denied entry on arrival.

Up to six thousand of FDHs, mostly coming from the Philippines and Indonesia, have been struggling to book quarantine places in Hong Kong since late August, when the government lifted a travel ban on those who received their vaccination in their home countries.

BASAHIN ANG KWENTONG DREAM LOVE

FDHs who were vaccinated in Hong Kong had gone on home leave may choose to quarantine at any DQF or at any of the other designated hotels on their return.

By Vir B. Lumicao

Sample of money laundering transactions made using a Filipina DH's bank account

A 32-year-old Filipina who used to work as a domestic helper was charged in Eastern Court today, Nov. 12, with money laundering after $100,000 was deposited into her bank account on Jun 13 last year.

The defendant, H.V. Gepulgani, was crying the whole time she was in the dock for the hearing of her case.

Call now!

Magistrate Ada Yim ordered the Filipina released on bail after her Duty Lawyer said she could post $1,600 cash bail, surrender her travel documents and reside with a friend who lives in Hong Kong.

The prosecution did not oppose the bail application.

PRESS FOR DETAILS!

Gepulgani was charged with one count of dealing with proceeds believed to be proceeds from a crime, after the money was found in her account with HSBC. No other details were disclosed.

The prosecutor requested for an eight-week adjournment of the case so police investigators could obtain from bank documents and information from the Immigration about the defendant.

Investigators are also looking into Gepulgani’s connections with three other Filipinos who were involved in a similar case, the prosecutor said.

She said the defendant was a domestic helper who was dismissed by her employer in June this year and was still looking for an employer.

Syndicates use ATM cards to withdraw dirty money they deposited into a FDH's account

Gepulgani’s arrest followed a series of arrests made by the police in connection with the use of bank accounts belonging to FDHs for laundering money obtained from illicit means, such as romance and phone scams.

The FDHs who were arrested said they surrendered their ATMs in exchange for loans of between $2,000 and $4,000 or as guarantee for high-paying parttime work offered to them online.

Hong Kong Police said that as of Sept 30 this year, they had received 136 reports of romance scams, involving the loss of $53.6 million. This marks a 58.8 % jump in the number of cases from the same period last year, in which $17.3 million was lost.

CE leads residents in taking booster dose of Covid-19 vaccine

CE Lam, with her arm still on a sling, stuck to Sinovac for her booster dose

Chief Executive Carrie Lam and some of her key officials were among the first in line as Hong Kong started giving qualified residents their third dose of a Covid-19 vaccine today, Nov. 11.

The city’s leader received her third dose of the Sinovac vaccine at the Community Vaccination Centre at Java Road Sports Centre in North Point.

She was accompanied by Civil Service Secretary Patrick Nip and Health Secretary Sophia Chan, who also had their booster shots.

Call now!

Elsewhere across Hong Kong, queues reportedly formed outside many CVCs as the first day for giving the additional jabs opened.

Those qualified to take the additional dose are people aged 60 and above, and other priority groups such as those with compromised immune systems or whose work puts them at higher risk of infection, such as healthcare workers and air crew staff.

Health experts have recommended that BioNTech be used for the third dose as it has a much higher efficacy than Sinovac, the only other vaccine available in Hong Kong. However, people are allowed to choose.

PRESS FOR DETAILS!

In deciding to stick to Sinovac for her third jab, CE Lam cited as reason the fact that she she did not experience any side effect from her first two doses of the vaccine.

But her comment that just because BioNTech was shown to have higher efficacy did not mean it was a better vaccine prompted a rebuttal from some experts.

CE Lam, Nip and Chan took time to chat with some elderly people taking their 3rd dose

After getting vaccinated, the three officials checked out the operations at the vaccination centre and thanked staff for their hard work. They also chatted with the other people who were also there to get their booster shot.

Mrs Lam said she was pleased that many people had chosen to get their third vaccine dose at the first opportunity, and that they were satisfied with the vaccination arrangements.

BASAHIN ANG KWENTONG DREAM LOVE

"With Covid-19 continuing to ravage the world, members of the public should get vaccinated as soon as possible to protect themselves, their family members and friends as well as the community,” she said.

“The more people get vaccinated, the greater the hope Hong Kong can emerge from the epidemic, and the sooner people can get back to their normal life, including the resumption of quarantine-free travel with the Mainland.”

Details of the third-dose Covid-19 vaccination arrangements may be found at this website: (www.covidvaccine.gov.hk).

Employer throws lifeline at Filipina DH with stage 3 cancer

Posted on No comments

By Daisy CL Mandap

Tonette's cheerful disposition shines through even when masked, and on her sickbed

“Never give up” is a statement that Filipina domestic worker Antonieta Simborio. aims to get by, as she battles to find a cure for her stage 3 cancer which has spread from her reproductive organs to her liver.

Unlike many of her fellow workers who crumble at the thought of having to go through chemotherapy and other potentially debilitating treatments, Simborio, who is 47, says she is hardly fazed by what lies ahead, as long as she gets better.

In this, she is helped by her employers of 13 years, who much to her surprise and gratitude, extended their contract only last Monday, even after doctors said her cancer had been spreading rapidly.

Ganoon na nga lang po ang pasasalamat ko,” (I am so grateful for this). Simborio said, who had thought at first that she had no choice but to go home, knowing that her employer is not obliged to keep her when their contract expires next month.

By then, Simborio had already been admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Jordan, where she was told that her cancer was already inoperable as it had metastasized to her chest, affecting her liver. But doctors said chemotherapy could help kill her cancer cells.

A fellow Filipina who was with her in the hospital got worried for Simborio, after seeing how her body had grown noticeably bloated in just two days. Lita, who reported Simborio's case to The SUN, quoted the doctor as saying it was one of the most aggressive cancers he had seen.

PRESS FOR DETAILS!

But despite the worrying prognosis, Simborio is not fazed, especially since she has her concerned employers by her side. She related how they accompanied her to all her doctor consultations, and on her discharge from hospital Tuesday night, came around to take her home.

On Wednesday morning she was back in hospital for a CT scan and Simborio was again full of confidence that she would overcome whatever challenges were thrown her way.

She said she will continue working for the couple for as long as she can. “Pero sabi ng employer kong lalaki huwag na daw akong magbubuhat ng mabibigat,” Simborio said. (But my male employer told me I shouldn’t carry anything heavy anymore).

BASAHIN ANG KWENTONG DREAM LOVE

She added she was grateful for the chance to get treated in Hong Kong, as she knew the medical facilities in her hometown of Ormoc, Leyte may not be as good, or even if they are, the treatment that she needs would be very expensive.

In this, she said she has the support of her family, particularly her partner of several years, who understands how important it is that she gets treated in Hong Kong before deciding to go home for good.

Simborio said she first had an inkling that something was not right when her stomach suddenly turned hard. She said she went to a doctor in Wanchai who, suspecting she had cancer, told her emphatically, “Huwag kang uuwi”. (Do not go home).

It’s an advice often given to ailing Filipina domestic workers who would sometimes insist on going back to the Philippines to be with their loved ones after being found to have a serious ailment.

Many ended up regretting the decision, after learning how much it would cost to get the kind of treatment they would have gotten in Hong Kong for next to nothing.

Basta ako gusto ko dito magpagamot. Sa pakiramdam ko naman ay malakas ako dahil magana pa rin akong kumain,” said Simborio. (As for me, I want to get treated here. I feel strong anyway because I have not lost my appetite.

Given her firm determination and positive outlook, apart from having supportive employers willing to go the extra mile to help her on the path to recovery, Simborio has no reason not to trump cancer.
