Health officials have reported a new surge in Covid-19 cases involving two bars in Central where outbreaks were reported in the past several days.

This came as the Centre for Health Protection reported 446 new infections on Saturday, which included 64 imported cases.

The biggest bar surge was at LINQ on Pottinger street, where 44 new cases were uncovered yesterday. They took the total number of infections there to 65, involving 40 males and 25 females.

According to Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection, 55 of the patients had been to the bar on May 28 and the rest, on May 29.

A surge was also recorded in Shuffle bar on Lan Kwai Fong, where 27 new cases were found, taking the total tally to 42. The infected customers comprise 28 females and 14 males.

New cases were also reported from two other bars where outbreaks were reported earlier. Iron Fairies had three new cases, taking the tally there to 53; while over at Zentral on D’Aguilar Street, two more cases were reported, for a total tally of 35.

Chuang said they are still studying the possible source of the outbreaks at Shuffle and LINQ. But she said genome analysis showed no common source for the spread of the virus at Iron Fairies and Zentral.

She went on to say that more cases could be expected when everyone who had been to the four bars during the dates and times indicated complied with the compulsory testing notice.

The authorities also reported small clusters of infections in some schools, which reported the cases even though it was a holiday yesterday.

These included the Christian and Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Primary School in Tseung Kwan O where five students were found infected.

The other schools affected were HKSPC Operation Santa Claus Fanling Nursery School and Baptist University Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School in Sha Tin.

One more case of the Omicron sub-variant BA.2.12.1 was reported, involving a 70-year-old woman who lives in Taikoo Shing and tested positive on May 31.

Chuang said the source of her infection was unknown, although the sub-variant had spread in various places in the area, particularly at McDonald’s in Cityplaza.

She also reported that 72 of those who reported positive results on rapid tests on June 1 tested negative on confirmatory PCR tests. Some of them had admitted reporting infections from earlier.

Of the 64 imported cases, 30 were detected at the airport – half from nine flights on Jun 3 and the other half from 10 flights on Jun 2.

There were 24 cases detected during hotel quarantine, and 10 involving people who tested positive after ending their isolation.

Meanwhile, no new Covid related death was reported, so the total fatality tally from the fifth wave remained at 9,168.

Dr Gladys Kwan of the Hospital Authority said 351 patients are still being treated in public hospitals and medical facilities, of which 28 are new cases.

Twelve are in critical condition, including six who are in intensive care, while seven are in serious condition.

In the past 24 hours, 36 more patients recovered from Covid, pushing the number of recoveries so far to 62,838.

251 people were fined $5k each after being found in the bar that was open at 4am (HK Police photo)

Police raided a Sham Shui Po bar that was operating beyond the 2am closing time Friday, and arrested 251 patrons, who were each made to pay $5,000, netting the government a total of $1,255,000 in fines.

The police operation on the bar at 195 on Tai Nam street was carried out at 4am, following surveillance.

A 44-year-old man surnamed Lam was arrested for operating the bar and breaching  Cap 599F Prevention and Control of Disease Regulation.

Another man surnamed Chan, who is 48 years old, was also arrested on suspicion of violating a correctional order.

The raid was carried out as officials found another Covid-19 outbreak at a bar in Central.

Fourteen people – 11 woman and three men aged between 21 and 32 – have tested positive for Covid-19 after going to Shuffle bar in Lan Kwai Fong between 11pm on May 28 until 2am the next day.

This is the fourth bar in Central where a cluster of cases has been found.

The new cases were among 499 reported by the Centre for Health Protection at the daily press briefing, which also included 49 brought in from abroad.

CHP’s Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan said one of the sick patrons at Shuffle had been to Zentral, the first bar to be hit by an outbreak. But it’s not clear if this was the cause of the latest outbreak.

Chuang said initial investigations showed some people at Shuffle had danced with their masks off.

14 cases were found at Shuffle bar in Lan Kwai Fong, the 4th bar in Central to be hit by an outbreak

Meanwhile, three more infections were linked to LINQ bar, raising the number of cases there to 23. Chuang said between 150 and 250 people had been to this bar on May 27 and 28, when the virus appears to have spread.

But all environmental samples taken from the bar tested negative, said the CHP.

No new cases were reported in Zentral, where 33 patrons have been found infected, and at Iron Fairies, where 49 customers and two staff have tested positive.

Another untraceable case of the Omicron B.2.12.1 sub-variant was reported, and it involved a student at the Hong Kong Christian Services Times Nursery School.

A fellow student who took a nap beside her during the whole-day class has also tested positive, and further tests will be taken to determine if she also has the sub-variant.

Another student at the Delia School of Canada in Tai Koo Shing where an outbreak of the Omicron strain was found, has tested positive. Three of her family members were all infected with the sub-variant as well.

In all, 12 new cases were reported by 11 schools, involving nine students and three staff from six kindergartens, three primary schools and two secondary schools.

Of the 49 imported cases, 24 were detected at the airport among travelers who arrived over two days, while 14 were reported during the seven-day quarantine.

The rest were detected on day 8, 9 or 10, when the patients had to do the PCR test to enter the mainland; while one is believed to have caught the virus in the community.

Chuang said the total tally from the fifth wave now stands at 1,201,561.

She again warned of legal consequences if people made false declarations about positive results from self-tests, as she reported that 49 or 23% of such reports made on May 31 tested negative on confirmatory tests.

Those who had been to the four bars hit by outbreaks should also comply with the compulsory testing notices to avoid having to pay a fixed penalty.

Dr Gladys Kwan of the Hospital Authority reported two more Covid-related deaths, involving two men aged 79 and 87 who both suffered from life-threatening ailments.

They took the death toll in the fifth wave to 9,168.

A total of 362 patients are confined in various public hospitals and treatment facilities. Among them, 12 patients are in critical condition, of whom six are in intensive care. Another seven patients are in serious condition.

In the past 24 hours, 59 patients recovered from Covid and 47 of them were discharged.

3 arrested for making false declaration of positive rapid test result

Posted on No comments

By The SUN

Those who failed to report a positive RAT result on time should just go for another jab, say experts

Do not falsely claim that you tested positive on a rapid antigen test for Covid-19 or you could be prosecuted and jailed for up to six months and fined up to $100,000.

This warning was issued by the government in a statement late on Friday, as it announced that the Centre for Health Protection had found six persons suspected of deliberately providing false information about their Covid test results.

Three of the six suspects have been arrested while the police is considering taking appropriate actions against the remaining three.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

The CHP has said in its daily Covid briefings that there has been a suspicious spike in the number of positive results on rapid antigen tests (RAT) being reported to the government platform.

CHP controller Dr Edwin Tsui said on Wednesday that this could be an attempt of recovered patients who did not report their Covid infections in February or March to make a belated reporting so they could receive the recovery record QR code needed to meet the current vaccine pass requirement.

Pindutin para sa detalye

This was supported by subsequent finding that the proportion of negative results using nucleic acid or PCR test was significantly higher than the average false-negative rate of RATs as compared with previous days before the third phase of the vaccine pass came into effect.

Today, for example, CHP’s Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan said follow-up tests showed that 49, or 23% of all RAT results submitted to them on May 31 were found to be false positives.

She reiterated the CHP will duly pass on to the authorities any suspicious positive RAT results submitted to their platform.

The government statement said making a false submission of a positive Covid-19 test result is “an irresponsible action that would have major impact on the fight against the epidemic.”

“The Government will deal with these cases in a serious manner,” added the statement.

The government also warned that since late April, when testing capacity permits, everyone who reported a positive RAT result is required to undergo a confirmatory test through PCR.

All cases confirmed negative through the PCR test will be deleted from the confirmed case record.

In addition, the person involved will no longer be allowed to use the quarantine order issued by the government, the recovery QR code or any other official documents showing proof of recovery.

This is apart from whatever criminal liability they may incur in accordance with the Prevention and Control of Disease (Disclosure of Information) Regulation (Cap. 599D), which penalizes any person who provides false or misleading information to a health officer or an authorised officer.

The statement said all recovered persons can safely receive the next dose of a vaccine 28 days after recovery.

Thus, those who are unsure whether they have been infected with Covid-19 or who do not have a recovery record in the Department of Health system are encouraged to just go for another vaccine dose.

The same advice is given for those who have not been vaccinated or have only received the first vaccine dose. They are encouraged to make an appointment for vaccination as soon as possible to meet the requirements of the vaccine pass and at the same time increase their antibody level.

Another Central bar hit by Covid as 489 new cases reported

18 people who visited LINQ bar in Central last Friday and Saturday have tested positive (Facebook photo)

Eighteen Covid-19 cases have emerged from yet another bar in Central, health officials said during the regular press briefing on Thursday.

Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection identified the bar as LINQ on Pottinger Street, where those infected were patrons who had visited last Friday and Saturday.

One of the patients had also been to Iron Fairies bar, where an earlier outbreak has resulted in 51 people getting the virus so far.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Another cluster at a nearby bar, Zentral, saw 33 patrons getting infected. Two new cases were reported today in each of the two bars.

Chuang said officials are still investigating whether the outbreak in LINQ was related to the earlier bar clusters.

She warned of a possible rebound in cases as 489 new infections were reported today, 65 of them imported. They raised the total tally from the fifth wave of infections to more than 1.2 million so far.

At the same time, she said many of the latest cases could be false positive, as about 2/3 of the daily tally were confirmed through self-reported rapid antigen test results.

Of the  489 new cases, 170 (which includes most of the imported cases) were confirmed through PCR tests and the remaining 319 from self-declared results from rapid tests.

Yesterday, CHP officials said they suspect the recent surge in cases may be due to recovered patients trying to report old RAT results so they could be exempt from the third dose requirement under the vaccine pass scheme.

Chuang said today that of the 150 RAT results reported on Monday, 31 cases or about 21% were found to be negative after further tests, much higher than the 17% recorded a week ago.

She repeated the warning that those who submit false information to the Health Department could face up to six months in jail if prosecuted.

Despite this, she said authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely, especially during the long weekend which starts tomorrow.

She also reported two other outbreaks – the first one involving a jazz dance class in Shek Kip Mei where six cases were reported, and the second, at the Li Po Chun United World College in Wu Kai Sha where four students tested positive.

In all, 40 new cases were reported in 34 schools across the city.

Dr Gladys Kwan reported one Covid-related death, involving a 64-year-old woman who had been in hospital for a month because of other chronic illnesses. Her case raised the  death toll to 9,167.

Kwan also said 397 patients are still confined in public hospitals and treatment facilities. They include 12 who are in critical condition, of whom seven are currently in intensive care. Seven others are in serious condition.
