Fate players say tearful goodbye to Chinese benefactor

Posted on 26 June 2022 No comments

By The SUN

There was not a dry eye in sight when Fate players saw their 'Daddy' for the last time

They may be a hardy bunch, but the Filipina domestic workers who make up the Fate softball team were all in tears Sunday night when they paid their final respects to Law Wai Ho, their team manager who they all called “Daddy.”

Law, who was 92, died in his sleep on Jun 9, just four days after he had his usual Sunday meet-up with the group he had helped nurture for nearly 10 years.

In a heartfelt tribute during a “sharing of treasured memories” with Law at the Po Fook Memorial Hall in Tai Wai, team captain Don Gaborno said of their relationship with their beloved manager, “We are not just a team but a family.”

Gaborno said that above all, her group wanted to thank Law for becoming an instrument to their getting into the Hong Kong Softball Association league, “giving honor and pride to all Filipinos.”

"Thank you for becoming a part of our lives," she added.

On the side, other Fate players recalled how Law had treated them like family that he would go on short trips to the Philippines to visit them and soak in the atmosphere, including going for a massage and haircut.

Law (in black) is all smiles here as Fate just scored back-to-back wins in the 2019 HKSA leagues

It was Gaborno who set up Fate at Law’s prodding shortly after they met at a baseball match in December 2012. Law assured her of financial help, from paying for the team’s uniform and equipment, as well as the registration fee to join the HKSA annual league. That fee amounted to $14,400 as of 2019, the year before the pandemic halted all the games.

More importantly, Law became a constant presence in their Sunday trainings and games. Photos from the various wins Fate had chalked up over the years show their benefactor always smiling broadly for the cameras along with them.

HOW? PINDUTIN LANG ANG PICTURE

With his death, Fate has become more determined to keep winning, and for this year, achieve its goal of moving back up to the HKSA’s elite Bracket A category.

In her tribute to Law, Gaborno said Fate knew that they made him happy and proud of their achievements.

“We will continue to make you proud of us and for our upcoming games we will do our best and we will offer it to you,” she promised.

An article on Law and published on the HKSA ten years ago said he was originally from Singapore who got hooked on baseball at an early age. But since there were no opportunities  beyond little league baseball at the time, he shifted to softball - and got stuck.

In no time he began teaching softball convincing more people to play the sport and form teams. He also became team manager for softball, and later, vice-president of the South China Athletic Association.

The final rites for Law will be held this morning at Po Fook Memorial Hall, to be led by his four children.

By The SUN

Some of the 601 patients receiving treatment are in the North Lantau Hospital

Health officials reported 1,917 new Covid-19 cases Sunday, 118 of which were imported.

Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection said it’s likely the numbers will reach 2,000 soon because there is a slow but increasing trend in Covid infections.

Of the 1,799 locally transmitted cases, 642 were confirmed through PCR tests and the remaining 1,157 were verified rapid test results.

Among the imported infections, 62 were detected at the airport and the rest, during or after quarantine.

The total number of infections from the fifth wave has now exceed 1.225 million while related deaths remain at 9,185 as no new fatality was reported today.

Eleven more local cases of BA.2.12.1 Omicron sub-variant were detected, including two diners at Victoria Harbour Restaurant in Tuen Mun, where an outbreak has led to 42 people getting infected. Five of the cases are untraceable.

A cluster of cases at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Shatin continues to grow. One more nurse and a staff assisting patients in the oncology department were tested positive Saturday, raising the number of cases there to eight.

The ward has stopped admitting patients while it undergoes thorough cleaning and disinfection. The HA is closely monitoring the situation.

At the schools, another class at St Stephen’s College has been suspended for a week, after three students and one staff member living in the dormitory there tested positive for the virus.

Chuang said the new cases appear unrelated to a previous outbreak at the school but the CHP is making further investigation.

Nine other students who live on the same floor as the patients were put under quarantine.

At two elderly care homes in Kwai Chung and Sai Wan, around 70 people were also moved to  a quarantine facility after several infections were found in both places.

Two residents and two staff members at Aura Nursing Home had tested positive, along with a staff member at Culture Homes Elderly Living.

Fu Tai Elderly Home in Tuen Mun also had three residents testing positive, raising the total infection tally there to 10 residents and five staff members.

The number of patients being treated at public hospitals and the infection control centre has grown to 601. Eleven of them are in critical condition and 12 are in serious condition.

Babala sa mga lalabas bukas: sobra ang init

Posted on No comments

HOW?

HK tightens rules on quarantine hotel bookings

Posted on 25 June 2022 No comments

By The SUN

The new rules are meant to protect travelers from hotel room scalping and price gouging

The government has taken steps to stop what it called the scalping of quarantine hotel rooms by requiring hotels to ensure that all room bookings are made under a real name and that full payment is made at the time of booking.

In a statement issued late on Friday, the government said the measures which were drawn up after consulting the hotel industry, will take immediate effect.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

The move came in the wake of widespread complaints about price gouging by travel agents who block-book hotel rooms, then pass them on to whoever is willing to pay their asking price.

The practice is said to have made it nearly impossible for travelers to secure hotel rooms in Hong Kong for the entire month of July and August, when demand is at its peak because of the number of people coming in at the end of the summer holiday.

Pindutin para sa detalye

Because of the surge in demand, hotel rooms have also become much pricier, with some costing double what was charged previously. Even budget hotels now charge about $800 per day, when they could be had for as low as $500 up to early May.

The problem affects even migrant workers who are coming to Hong Kong for the first time, or are returning from a holiday timed to coincide with the school break of their wards.

In the government’s press statement, the measures also include a prohibition on partner travel agents of designated quarantine hotels against block booking rooms, and failing to provide the full names of guests, and paying for each booking in full.

Hotels are also required to ask travel agents to itemize the fees charged on a receipt issued to guests, and ensure the room rate that was charged is the same as the published rate on the government website

HOW? PINDUTIN LANG ANG PICTURE

The government said it will not tolerate any kind of scalping activities and will take appropriate actions when the new rules are not complied with.

The announcement was met with mixed reactions from members of a quarantine support group. One said that for as long as the hotel bookings remain transferrable the scalping will continue.

Press for details

Another expressed concern, saying full payment should not be required because travel plans or schedules could easily change, and some hotels do not allow a refund unless it’s for reasons beyond the guest’s control.

However, everyone agreed that the only way to solve the hotel booking problem is to allow home quarantine, or scrap the quarantine altogether.

Incoming Chief Executive John Lee said last week he will look into the issue as soon as he takes office, after trade and business leaders again issued calls to remove the quarantine requirement.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

However, reports citing government sources the most that could happen is that the quarantine period will be shortened to either three or five days.

Meanwhile, the government said three more hotels will join the quarantine hotel scheme from August to October, providing some 900 additional rooms.

That will result in some 24,000 rooms in 65 quarantine hotels being made available for inbound travelers during the three months.

CHP mum on top-level Covid infections, as daily caseload hits 1,860

Posted on 24 June 2022 No comments

By The SUN

Eric Chan & Erick Tsang are among the top officials due to be sworn in on July 1

The Centre for Health Protection has declined to give further information on two top government officials testing positive for Covid-19, just days before the planned big celebration of the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover to China.

CHP’s Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan said at today’s press briefing that she did not wish to comment on individual cases when asked repeatedly about how incoming Chief Secretary, Eric Chan and mainland and constitutional chief Erick Tsang caught the virus.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Chuang was also asked if there was a possibility that a cluster of cases involving government officials would emerge.

“I will not comment on individual sporadic cases,” she said.

Pindutin para sa detalye

The CHP reported 1,860 new cases Friday, which included 139 brought in from overseas.

This was a jump of more than 200 from yesterday’s tally, and took the total infection figure from the fifth wave to more than 1.22 million.

Among the 1,721 locally acquired cases,1,111 were verified rapid test results while 610 were confirmed through PCR tests.

The imported cases meanwhile included 67 detected at the airport, 57 at quarantine hotels and 15 post-quarantine.

HOW? PINDUTIN LANG ANG PICTURE

The new cases included seven more people who dined at Victoria Harbour Restaurant in Tuen Mun on Jun 16.

There are now 37 infections so far from that outbreak, involving 33 customers and four close contacts, aged between six to 69 years old.

Chuang said they still have no clue as to how the outbreak began although they suspect that it was caused by the highly transmissible Omicron sub-variant BA.2.12.1. Tests on environmental samples taken from the restaurant all had negative results.

Press for details

Last night, the government announced that Chan and Tsang were undergoing quarantine after being found infected during routine testing ahead of the handover celebrations on July 1.

The two are due to take their oath of office before the incoming Chief Executive John Lee on that day.

They are the most senior government officials to come down with the coronavirus, and their infections have cast a shadow on the handover ceremony, which is expected to be attended by a state leader.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

In an interview on TVB news, Tsang said he had no symptoms at all, and had no idea where he caught the virus.

His wife, customs chief Louise Ho has tested negative, but has also been quarantined as she's been listed as a close contact.

Separately, Chan who tested positive along with his wife, is said to have very few symptoms. Chan has been under isolation since Tuesday since his wife was found infected earlier.

The government said both the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau and the Chief Executive's Office will conduct through cleansing and disinfection of the offices concerned.

Relevant staff will also be tested in line with an advice from CHP.
