Pinoy ipinaaresto nang hindi sumipot sa pagbasa ng kanyang sentensiya

Posted on 28 July 2022 No comments

Filipino denies charges of threatening to burn down Consulate, assaulting staff

Posted on No comments

By Daisy CL Mandap

Footage taken at the Consulate's lift lobby on the day the accused allegedly loitered outside

A Filipino resident is to stand trial on Oct. 31 after he pleaded not guilty earlier today to three charges relating to his alleged threat to burn down the Consulate, assaulting a staff member and loitering in the premises, causing concern.

Ronald B. Bondoc, 41, replied “not guilty” to each of the three charges as they were read out to him in Eastern Court before Principal Magistrate Ada Yim.

The accused, whose occupation is listed in the charge sheet as an architectural designer,  had asked the court to dispense with a court interpreter earlier, saying he could understand and speak English.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

When Magistrate Yim asked what the defense would be, Bondoc’s lawyer said “self defense” would be raised in the common assault charge.

But, he added, “My instruction is that they (charges) will all be disputed.”

The lawyer said Bondoc would produce two CCTV footages, each lasting between two to three minutes, as part of his defence.

In turn, the prosecution said it would call three witnesses, including the arresting officer and an interpreter.

The trial will last for two days, or from Oct 31 to Nov 1, also at Eastern Court.

Yim extended Bondoc’s bail of $500 on the same terms until his next court appearance. He was also told to submit to the prosecution his statement of facts and list of exhibits by Oct 25.

No one from the Consulate was around for the hearing of the case. Bondoc, on the other hand, was accompanied to court by his Filipina partner and their baby.

In the first charge of criminal intimidation, Bondoc is alleged to have called up the Consulate on Jan 22 this year and threatened to burn down its office on the 14th floor of United Centre Building in Admiralty and “cause injury to a male named Arnel.”

The call was answered by female staff member Lhyndzie Anne Mapor.

PRESS FOR MORE DETAILS

The second charge, which is for common assault, resulted from Bondoc’s alleged act of pushing to the ground another staff, Edmound R. Cortes, who had allegedly tried to stop him entering the Consulate on Jan 24.

In the third charge, he was accused of loitering in the lift lobby of the Consulate on Mar 28, “causing concern.”

The charge said, “your presence there alone caused any person reasonably to be concerned for (their) safety or well-being.

The intimidation charge replaced an earlier one for “possession of offensive weapon in a public place,” in which Bondoc was originally accused of carrying a 60cm long metal bar into the lift lobby of the Consulate on Mar 28.

During earlier hearings, the court was told the defendant was committed to Queen Mary Hospital after his arrest on Mar 28, complaining of feeling unwell.

He was later transferred to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, and then to Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre, for further treatment.

But he was allowed to post bail when he next appeared in court on Apr 21.

Earthquake shakes Luzon, leaving 4 dead, scores hurt, billions in damage

Posted on No comments

One of the collapsed buildings in Abra.

A magnitude 7 earthquake in Abra  jolted the rest of Luzon at 8:43 this morning, leaving four people dead, scores injured and billions of pesos worth of damage to buildings, churches, other properties, roads and bridges.

The quake, traced to a spot 17 kilometers below the town of Tayum, Abra, was felt in most of Luzon, especially in Metro Manila where skyscrapers swayed for almost one minute, triggering panic among workers. Expected aftershocks could cause more damage.

Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos said two of the fatalities were from Benguet, one from Abra, and one from Mt. Province.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Of the fatalities, only three have been confirmed:

·        The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported one who died in Benguet.

·        Another report said a construction worker was killed in Barangay Buyagan, La Trinidad, Benguet, when he was hit by falling debris from a building that collapsed.

·        Abra Gov. Jocelyn Bernos said a 25-year-old man was killed after he was pinned by a concrete slab in the capital town of Bangued.

Authorities said the death toll may still rise as rescue workers work through the night clearing landslides triggered by the tremor and the rubble of buildings that collapsed or were damaged.

Damage was reported in the following:

·        Most towns of Abra, where local governments reported buildings had collapsed or were damaged. Several bridges collapsed in Lagangilang town.

·        Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, where century-old structures of Spanish colonial and Asian architecture are a tourist attraction.

·        Baguio, along with several mountain towns in the area, were isolated by landslides that buried roads leading to them.

·        Kennon Road, the Benguet-Vizcaya Road, the Baguio-Bua-Itogon Road, and Mt. Data Cliff were closed to vehicular traffic due to several landslides.

·        The Mountain Province-Ilocos Sur Road via Tue and Kayan Roads in Mankayan were closed due but the Department of Public Works and Highways has sent heavy equipment to clear the landslides.

·        The Baguio-Bontoc Road and the Mountain Province-Cagayan Road via the Tabuk-Enrile Road have been cleared of rocks and other debris.

The list is expected to lengthen as more reports are received.

Press for details

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. told a press briefing he would not go to the disaster areas for the meantime to avoid disrupting relief work led by Social Work Secretary Raffy Tulfo, who arrived by helicopter in Bangued before lunch.

But Marcos gave instructions to disaster and relief officials:  “Make sure to inspect the buildings for cracks and watch out for landslides, especially when it rains.”

He also raised the possibility of reviving a bill, which died in the Senate after being passed by the House of Representatives, that would create the Department on Disaster Resilience.

PRESS FOR MORE DETAILS

"Mukhang...I don't like to say it, mukhang mapapadalas ito eh... not the earthquake pero 'yung weather, lalo na 'yung extreme weather... kahit hindi bagyo, nakikita mo sa Europe, sa Amerika, baka naman abutan tayo ng ganyan, 'yung napakainit masyado," Marcos added.

"So these are the things that we have to be careful, we need more capability than we have now. Magaling na tayo sa bagyo, marunong na tayo sa lindol pero ang mga dangers, the effects of climate change are different, that's why we need a specialist agency," he added.

Senators responded by throwing their support, with Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri said: "I fully support it and You have the support from this chair."

Officials express alarm as 10 more elderly people die after catching Covid

Posted on 27 July 2022 No comments

By The SUN

Health condition of elderly people who catch Covid can deteriorate rapidly, say doctors (File)

Health officials are urging elderly people who test positive for Covid-19 to inform the government immediately so they can be checked and given proper medical attention.

The call came as the Hospital Authority announced the deaths of 10 people aged between 74 and 97, who all tested positive for the coronavirus.

Among them was an 85-year-old man who passed out on the street and was certified dead at the hospital, and a 76-year-old female who passed away at home.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

The others all died after admission to hospital and had serious and chronic ailments like cancer, heart problem, hypertension and diabetes.

“If you test positive you must report even if you only have mild symptoms,” said Dr Gladys Kwan, chief manager of the Hospital Authority.

She said the health condition of elderly people could deteriorate rapidly, so even those with only mild symptoms could become seriously ill within a matter of hours.

“We are very worried about this that is why we are taking this initiative to appeal to our patients to watch their condition strictly,” said Dr Gladys Kwan, a chief manager of the Hospital Authority.

Dr Kwan says elderly patients should report their infection immediately

Kwan also announced that the HA is planning to relax its guidelines for administering oral Covid drugs to either lower the age for qualified patients, or include more high-risk groups.

The Centre for Health Protection’s Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan also called on the elderly to get vaccinated and if they have already done so, ensure they receive booster jabs.

“We can see from the fatalities that most did not have vaccine jabs or did not complete their vaccination,” said Chuang.

Press for details

Among today’s Covid-related deaths, three had no vaccination at all, four had one shot each, while the remaining 3 each had two jabs.

Chuang also said the reason health officials have decided to reverse the format of the press briefing by giving out the number of patients in hospitals as well as deaths ahead of the daily tally was because people are likely to be interested more on how many serious cases there were each day.

A total of 4,276 additional infections were reported for the day, including 220 imported cases. This marked the first time since the mass outbreak in infections eased in early July that the local cases had topped the 4,000 mark.

PRESS FOR MORE DETAILS

The local cases included 482 reported from 371 schools, involving 395 students and 87 teachers and staff. Eight schools were told to suspend a class each in which a number of students and/or teachers tested positive.

Among the imported cases, 117 were detected on arrival at the airport, 87 during hotel quarantine and 21 post-isolation.

The new arrivals came from 50 different places, and the following countries each had 10 or more cases: United Kingdom, 43; Thailand, 20; United States, 18; Nepal, 17; and the Philippines, 13.

A total of 1390 Covid patients are now confined in public hospitals and treatment facilities, and they included 162 who got admitted overnight.

Among them, 28 are in critical condition, including eight who are in intensive care units; and 19 are seriously ill.

Filipina who stole after husband lost job in pandemic escapes jail

Posted on No comments

By Daisy CL Mandap

Magistrate Ada Yim imposed a suspended sentence on the Filipina defendant

A Filipina domestic helper who admitted stealing jewelry worth some $60,000 from her employer of 12 years managed to get off lightly earlier today after Eastern Court magistrate Ada Yim heard that the defendant’s husband had become jobless due to the pandemic.

Mayflor C. Rivamonte, 41, was sentenced to two months in jail, suspended for 18 months, immediately after she pleaded guilty to theft.

This meant that she should not spend time in jail for the offence, unless she commits another one during the 18-month period.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

However, she had already been in detention since her arrest on Jun 28, after prosecutors opposed granting her bail initially, calling the charges against her serious.

In appealing for a lighter sentence, her lawyer told the court that the defendant was married and had four children who all depend on her for support. Her husband who works as a painter, lost his job due to the pandemic.

Rivamonte had a clear record and did not commit any offence during the 12 years that she had worked in Hong Kong for the same employer. Thus, what she did was totally out of character.

In addition, the two rings that she had stolen out of financial need and had pawned for a total of about $7,000 had both been recovered.

In sentencing, Magistrate Yim used three months as a starting point, then reduced it by a third for her guilty plea. The decision to suspend the sentence was based on the mitigation plea by the defence lawyer.

In her first court appearance on Jun 29, Rivamonte was accused of stealing between Nov 8, 2021 and Apr 7, 2022 from her employer Luy Wing-kwan three rings, three pairs of earrings and cash totaling $10,000.

Press for details

The alleged thefts happened at Luy’s home at Tower 6 of South Horizons in Ap Lei Chau, Hong Kong island.

The Filipina was arrested after some pawnshop receipts were found in her possession. However, during questioning by the police she admitted some, but not all the alleged thefts.

PRESS FOR MORE DETAILS

Today, the amended charge to which Rivamonte pleaded guilty said she stole two rings from her employer’s house between an unknown date in December 2021 and Apr 7, 2022. The value of the stolen items was reduced to $60,080.

The prosecution had asked for the case to be adjourned the first time it was heard in court, saying more time was needed to confer with the police and some pawnshops before the next hearing date.
