Filipina DH, resident tagged in massive recruitment scam

Posted on 17 September 2021 No comments

Bote's Facebook account which she used to chat with applicants

Two Filipinas, one a domestic helper who works in Sai Wan Ho and the other, a resident, have been tagged as key players in the recruitment of around 60 Filipinos for non-existent jobs as foreign domestic helpers and gardeners in Hong Kong.

The two have been named in numerous statements executed by alleged victims, believed to have netted the operators at least Php3million (around $500,000) since January this year.

Informed about the complaints, Consul General Raly Tejada immediately pledged to look into the case and confer with relevant authorities like the Hong Kong Police and the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency, if necessary.

He is also considering issuing an advisory to warn Filipinos about the illicit operation.

He made his pledge after being told of at least one case filed by a Filipina DH in Hong Kong, Maricris Vargas, who claimed to have lost a total of $23,298 (Php150,000) which she sent to the scammers in five installments between January and February this year.

Call us!

Vargas said she was lured into the scam by a friend, fellow Filipina DH named Ruby Ariz Bote (with Facebook name Yhenchen Ruby Zira) who allegedly promised to work on processing a work visa for her relatives in the Philippines if she paid Php150,000.

Vargas' police statement shows a breakdown of the money she sent to Gregory

“As I did not have enough money, I asked my relatives in the Philippines to remit the amount to (Bote) for me. Bote then gave a name to me for the remittance: Marilyn Pascua Gregory.”

Most of the other complainants in the case also have receipts of remittances to Hong Kong made through Western Union in the name of Gregory.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

According to chat messages sent them by Bote and other alleged members of the recruitment gang, Gregory is a Hong Kong resident who lives in Hibiscus Park in Kwai Chung, and hails from Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat.

Bote, whose Hong Kong address has been given by Vargas as block 2, Grand Promenade in Sai Wan Ho, is said to also live in Sultan Kudarat.

Two of her fellow recruiters named in most of the complaints also hail from Mindanao, but in General Santos City – Jennifer Rocacurva, who works as a DH in Singapore, and Christine Joy Smith, who claims to be a resident of the United Kingdom.

Another complainant who named both Bote and Gregory in her statement to the Consulate lives all the way in Kyrgyztan, although she also used to work as a FDH in Hong Kong.

Angela Rojas said she sent a total of Php135,000 ($21,000) to Gregory at Bote’s behest. Rojas said she trusted Bote because they were neighbors in Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.

Bote allegedly told Rojas about the supposed “urgent” and VIP recruitments in Hong Kong, and asked her to advance the placement fees for two of their friends back in the Philippines as they didn’t have money.

Rojas sent the equivalent of Php100,000 to Gregory on Feb 12, and on the next day, instructed her brother-in-law to send another Php35,000 to pay for the processing fee of another applicant.

Pinamadali kasi kami ni Ruby ng padala dahil lahat daw ng mga post nila na hiring ay may ready job order na,” said Rojas (Ruby told us to send the money quickly because all their hirings already have job orders).

But after sending the money, Rojas said she learned that all the information given them by Bote was false. For one, she said, the applicants were told by staff in the clinic where they were told to go for a medical check-up that they didn’t know any of their recruiters.

Some of the applicants were told at this medical clinic that they had no scheduled check-up

(All the schedules given them did not push through. They set another date for the medical examination, but it didn’t push through again. The same happened for the training they were supposed to get. All of this happened in two months, when they were assured they could leave in two months).

A more graphic statement was made by an applicant who went through the ordeal of being told to go to Manila, ostensibly for medical check-up and training, and ended up having to look for his own accommodation while he waited in vain for the promised services.

Rogelio Mendoza said he learned about the job offers in Hong Kong from Vargas, who is his sister-in-law.

Tiwala ako dahil nandyan ang hipag ko sa Hong Kong,” he said (I was confident because my sister-in-law is in Hong Kong).

He said he and his brother-in-law each sent Php50,000 on Jan 23 to Gregory on Bote’s instructions.

On Feb 20, the two were told to go to Manila, and were promised that somebody would pick them up. But nobody showed up, so they were forced to stay in a hotel.

The next day, they were told to go to a place in Quezon City, but they were shocked to see it so crowded that they called up Ruby to complain. They ended up fighting with her so they decided to just to go to his brother-in-law’s relative in Manila to ask to be sheltered.

On Feb 22 they were told to go to a clinic for their medical check-up but were told that they didn’t have an appointment, and their supposed Hong Kong agent, a Madam Shirley Leung, was not known to any of the staff there.

A Madam Leung is threatening to sue the complainants and The SUN over the expose

By that time, Bote, Rocacurva and Smith had already blocked him from their chat group, so in anger, Mendoza said he posted on Facebook about the jobs scam, and called for his money to be given back.

Pinaglalaban pa rin nilang hindi sila manloloko,” he said.

(After I posted about them on May 18, 2021, they all suddenly came out to swear at me. But then they said they would give back my money but threatened to sue me because of my post. They were still insisting that they were not scammers).

Mendoza said the three returned only part of his money because they still took out more than Php4,000 from what he sent them.

He said he wants them held to account still because not only does he have to keep paying 15% interest on the money he borrowed to send to them, he also had to suffer the humiliation of being given the run-around and called names by the illegal recruiters.

Mga kaibigan at kababaryo naenganyo

Cecilia Añoc, before and after

Filipina DH looks for owner of thousand-dollar bills she found in MTR station

Posted on No comments

By Daisy CL Mandap

Are you the owner of these thousand-dollar bills found inside Kowloon MTR?

Anybody here lost a couple of thousand dollars inside the Kowloon MTR station yesterday?

Herminihilda B. Molina, 34, wants to know. She has asked The SUN for help in locating the owner of a number of thousand-dollar bills folded together which she found while seated on one of the benches inside the MTR station.

Molina said she sat there in the early afternoon while waiting for the clinic where she was to have a flu vaccine shot to open. After finding the bills, she found a $20 note nearby, which presumably was dropped by the same person.

Call us!

She said she asked around if anybody had lost money, but nobody did. One of the people around said a man had last sat at the spot where she was.

Not seeing anyone in the immediate vicinity who appeared to be looking for the money, Molina said she turned over the entire amount that she found at a lady staff member of the MTR station, who proceeded to take down her name and contact number.

“Thanks and God bless.”

Molina says it never crossed her mind to keep the money

Asked if she never thought of just keeping the money since it did not come with any means of identifying the owner, Molina said: “Hindi ko po talaga inisip na itago kasi alam ko po ang pakiramdam ng mawalan. Dati po kasi, nanakaw ang bag ng nanay ko nong 2015, laman ang pera at passbook nya. Halos nabaliw siya kasi malaki-laking pera po ang nasa bag niya. At isa pa, hindi po (ito) galing sa sarili kong pawis. Ayaw ko po ipakain sa pamilya ko ang hindi ko pinagpaguran.”

Pindutin para sa detalye

(I never thought of keeping it because I know the feeling of someone who lost something valuable. My mother’s bag was stolen in 2015, and it contained money and her passport. She nearly lost her mind because the money she lost was quite huge. Further, this is something that did not come from my own sweat. I do not wish to feed my family with something I did not work hard for).

Under Hong Kong laws, theft by finding is treated just like any other offences of theft, for which the maximum penalty is 10 years in jail.

However, under the Police Force Ordinance, the finder gets to keep the money or good lost if no owner steps forward to claim it within three months.

But exceptions have been made for owners who fail to make a timely claim, as in the case in 2012 of a Macau punter who left his gambling winnings amounting to $2 million inside a taxi, and stepped forward to claim it only after six months.

According to a statement from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the decorations will be lit up from 6:30pm to 11pm every evening from tomorrow, and will be extended until midnight on mid-autumn day on Tuesday, Sept 21.

At Tin Shui Wai Park, the centerpiece will be a 5m-high phoenix lantern decoration. There will be other lantern displays featuring rabbits, ladybugs, meerkats and robots.

The Cultural Center’s energy-efficient dazzling light installation which can be viewed for a longer time is a creation by local local artist Dylan Kwok.

DH who won in vaccine draw is Filipina, sponsors say

By The SUN

Grand-prize winner Lee (center) with the organizers' representatives

A Filipina domestic helper was among the 20 second-prize winners of credit cards pre-loaded with $100,000  in the lucky draw for vaccinated residents sponsored by the Sino Group of companies’ Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Chinese Estate Holdings.

The information was released in a statement published by the organizers last night, which came with a picture of the 35-year-old chef who won the grand prize, a $10.8 million brand-new flat in Grand Central, Kwun Tong.

The young chef, surnamed Lee, received his prize at a presentation ceremony yesterday, Sept 15. The first-time property owner who is currently renting a flat in Cheung Sha Wan went to see his new home right away.

Call us!

Lee said he got vaccinated to support the city’s economic recovery as the pandemic has affected many restaurants.

"I truly believe vaccination is the most effective way to protect myself and my family, and this win is certainly a pleasant yet unexpected surprise," he said.

"I shall continue to encourage my friends and family to get vaccinated, and to prepare ourselves for returning to normality and travel again."

The statement also said arrangement had been made with the second-prize winners to redeem their prizes of a credit card with a stored value of $100,000 each after verifying their eligibility.

The winners, 13 males and 7 females, are said to come from a diverse background, including a Filipina DH, a manicurist, medical practitioner, pastry chef, and two retirees. The youngest winner is a French student.

The FDH was easily identified from a list of HK ID card numbers released by the organizers previously. The lucky Filipina's HKID card starts with WX111 and her mobile phone number ends with 0687.

The organizers are offering to raffle off another flat, worth about $12 million in the phase 2 of the lucky draw, but on condition that at least five million Hong Kong people get their first shot of a Covid-19 vaccinated by Sept 30.

The condition is not likely going to be met, however, as the daily vaccination figure has fallen drastically over the past several days. The latest tally shows 4.367 million qualified people have taken their first jab, with an average daily intake of just 10,000.

The prizes in the Phase 2 Lucky Draw include 20 scholarships with a value of $200,000 each, sponsored by NTFCF, for vaccinated residents aged between 12 and 18 years old.

For enquiries, contact the dedicated Lucky Draw hotline between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday to Sunday at 3697 9357 or email enquiry@vaccinationluckydraw.hk

Free ride on the ‘ding-ding’ on Mid-Autumn Festival

By The SUN

Free tram rides are on offer again next Tuesday, the Mid-Autum Festival day

Another day of free rides on the tram is offered to the public on the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival next Tuesday, Sept 21.

The freebie is courtesy of Huatai International, which is celebrating the first anniversary of its mobile stock trading application, Zhangle Global.

“Please enjoy free tram rides in this Mid-Autumn Festival and have a taste of the true “0 Hidden Fees” experience brought to you by the Zhangle Global app,” says a statement from the company posted on HK Tramway’s website.

Call us!

As the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival is a working day, office workers and those who take the tram as part of their daily routine will gain the most from the offer. Had it been timed for the next day, Sept 22, people on holiday, including foreign domestic workers, would have benefited.

Huatai says that along with the tram ads for James Bond 007 movies on its special day there will be a banner theme on fencing.

"The fencing-themed advertisement signifies the hard work and breakthroughs Hong Kong athletes achieved at the Tokyo Games and reminds Hongkongers of the precious moments they had together," Huatai says.

It was in fencing where Hong Kong won its gold medal in last month’s Tokyo Olympics, courtesy of Edgar Cheung.

This is the fourth time this year that free tram rides are being offered to the public. The first was another company-sponsored event on Mar 8, the second in celebration of the Handover on Jul 1, and the most recent was on Aug 18, to celebrate a Guinness World Record award for the largest double-decker fleet of trams in service.
