Macau to lift mask mandate from tomorrow

Posted on 26 February 2023 No comments

Macau will go back to being a mask-free place from tomorrow

From tomorrow, Feb 27, Macau will allow people to go around in public without a mask, except when taking public transportation (but not taxis) or visiting hospitals and homes for the elderly.

Those managing indoor public venues such as malls are allowed to use their discretion in deciding whether to still require people who enter to wear masks.

Children three years old and below are allowed to go around without a mask under all circumstances.

In announcing the lifting of the remaining pandemic restriction, the Macau government said the "epidemic situation in Macau has continuously remained stable over the last two months".

The statement said the indoor masking requirement may still be adjusted again according to the actual Covid-19 situation.

Officials also say that supervisors of indoor venues may decide whether to require masks, taking into account factors such as air circulation, crowd density and the activities taking place.

In addition, organisers of large-scale events or heads of institutions such as nursery schools should require masks if there's an uptick in cases or a cluster of infections.

To be sure, people are advised to take a mask with them whenever they go out and to keep a two-week supply of masks at home.

They are also told to wear a mask if they have fever, sore throat, cough, runny nose or other flu-like symptoms.

With Macau further relaxing its pandemic restrictions, Hong Kong now remains as one of the few places in the world where people are still required to wear a mask outdoors.

Hong Kong last week extended its mask mandate until Mar 8, and Health Secretary Lo Chung-mau said that even if the restriction is lifted, people will still be required to wear a mask in medical settings, such as hospitals and care homes.

Hong Kong and Macau both followed China’s zero-Covid policy for the past three years, which included mandatory mask-wearing in public since 2020.

Govt warns about fake calls asking personal details from SIM card users

Posted on 25 February 2023 No comments

Govt staff will never ask for personal details over the phone from SIM card users

The Office of the Communications Authority has warned the public that it is not behind fraudulent calls asking for personal details of people, supposedly because they had failed to complete real-name registration for their SIM cards.

The pre-recorded calls from someone claiming to be from OFCA or the Communications Authority (CA) tell recipients that since they failed to complete their SIM card registration their lines will be cut unless they provided personal information.

OFCA said that it will never make such phone calls, and neither will CA. It urged people to disregard the calls and “and under no circumstances should they disclose their personal information to the callers.”

They may also report cases of suspected phone scam to the police.

The said post offices will open until 7pm Saturday and 5pm on Sunday.

The arrest on Feb 23 came after customs agents investigated a report about the suspect failing to tell a customer that he was required to pay an extra charge apart from the agency fees, before a foreign domestic helper he was hiring could be brought into Hong Kong.
