Hong Kong posted a Covid caseload of 5,020 on Thursday, the highest number posted since Apr 1, when the Omicron-fueled outbreak began to ease.

The new cases included 247 that were imported, according to Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection.

Three related deaths were recorded, raising the total fatality toll in the fifth wave to 9,314.

Dr Lau Ka-hin of the Hospital Authority said the deceased involved two men and one woman aged 76 to 94. Only one of them had received three vaccine doses.

Lau also reported an outbreak at the tuberculosis and chest ward at TWGHS Wong Tai Sin Hospital which was detected following a compassionate visit by  a relative to a 94-year-old female patient on Aug. 2.

The visitor tested negative on a rapid antigen test before getting into the hospital, but returned a positive result on a PCR test yesterday. The hospital later found that the 94-year-old woman and three other female patients in the ward were also infected.

After the elderly patient died this morning, the case was referred to the Coroner for follow-up investigation. Her death will be added to tomorrow’s tally.

Lau said authorities are still investigating if the three cases were linked and if they were, how the transmission occurred.

CHP said four elderly homes and two care centers for the disabled also reported new infections.

As of this morning, 367 positive cases from 286 schools were reported, involving 300 students and 67 teachers and staff members.

Three schools will suspend a class each for a week after two or more students had come down with the virus.

An additional 172 Covid patients were admitted to public hospitals in the past 24 hours, raising the number of those receiving treatment to 1,515.
