Gella gets first gold for RP bowlers in HK Open

A lone Filipina gave the Philippines its first gold trophy in the Hong Kong International Open Tenpin Bowling Championships on Thursday, Jun 28, when she single-handedly beat the male-dominated field in the Under-18 Masters Finals event.

Grace Gella downed 1227 pins to tie second-placer Ambrose Hon of Hong Kong, but the handicap of 8 pins per game given to girl bowlers in the category catapulted the petite 16-year-old to the top. Both averaged 205.

Another Hong Kong youth, Jacky Lo, averaged 203 and finished third with a 1218 to round off the top three in the category.

Gella was the only Filipino among the 15 players who moved into the Under-18 Masters finals. Ten of the finalists were Hong Kong boys, two were Malaysians, and Australia and Kuwait had one each.

The Filipina started slow, scattering only 184 pins in Game 1 while Australian Nixon Chan rolled a perfect game of 300 to win early adulation of both the competitors and the spectators. Trailing him was Hon, who scored 225.

But Chan’s stellar start fizzled out with only 160 and Hon slowed to 213 in the second game, while Gella was steady at 184. Lo, meanwhile, surged forward with a 236 in Game 2 following a 167 in the first game.

In the succeeding games, Gella racked up a 190-221-237-211 series while Hon logged steadily slowing games of 211-206-194-178 and Lo strung 168-247-245-155.

Chan felled only 144 pins in the third game and scored 200-185-214 but was already out of contention for the bronze with 1203 pins.

In men’s competition, Filipino bowler Kenneth Chua, qualified on Jun 27 for Friday’s Open Masters with a score of 1423 to place third in the overseas pool of Stage 1.

Chua, last year’s Philippine Open champion, joined leader Lee Tak Man of Macau, who dropped 1433 pins, and Ryan Lalisang of Indonesia, who rolled 1429.

They will bowl against top three Hong Kong qualifiers James Lui, who scored 1451; Ivan Tse, 1433; and Wicky Yeung, 1409.

The top three placers in the overseas and local pools will take a bye and automatically advance to the Stage 2 finals.  

Nearly all HK agencies ignore Code of Practice

More than a year since the Code of Practice for Employment Agencies was introduced by the Hong Kong government, nearly all industry players continue to violate it, a new research reveals.

According to a report published on Jun 17 by the HK Federation of Asian Domestic Workers (FADWU), the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions and Rights Exposure,  96% of all agencies did not comply with key provisions in the CoP.

The findings of the study titled “Agents of Change: Assessing Agency Compliance with the Code of Practice,” were based on a survey of 453 foreign domestic workers between July last year and March this year.

The findings were reportedly backed up by undercover video recordings in 18 agencies surveyed.

The report highlights that the vast majority of the 1,436 licensed agencies in Hong Kong violate the Code with impunity.

Foremost of these breaches was the charging of illegal fees, with 57% of the agencies allegedly asking the workers to pay agency fees averaging $9,013, the report said. That is more than 20 times the 10% of a worker’s first monthly salary as prescribed by law.

The research cited that 222 or 57% of the 389 newly arrived workers interviewed said they had been charged illegal fees. Of this group, 132 paid through salary deduction. 

Some 30% or 136 out of 449 interviewees claimed they were made to pay by the agencies even before they received their first monthly salary, the report said.

The Code specifies that the workers should pay the legal fee only after receiving their first monthly salary. Agencies that violate the law are liable to a fine of $350,000 and imprisonment of three years.

Different numbers of interviewees have been cited in the report as responding to particular questions, as not all them answered all the questions either because they could not recall or the questions were not relevant to their situation, according to the research.

The interviews were conducted by FADWU in collaboration with the Indonesian group Komunitas Buruh Migran-HK to check on agency compliance with the CoP, which was introduced in January 2017.

The research was presented at the launch by Ruth Arceta of FADWU, Iis of KOBUMI, Ann Olsen, gender and migration specialist of the International Labor Organization, and Labour Party legislator Fernando Cheung.

The research, which was supported by ILO, also examined the Code’s impact on the human and labor rights of domestic workers in Hong Kong.

“Non-compliance with the Code of Practice is not confined to a few rogue agencies, but is rather a widespread problem throughout Hong Kong,” Phobusk Gasing, chairperson of KOBUMI, said at the launch.

“Our research documents that 148 agencies – 10% of the total number –violated one or more aspects of the Code,” she said.

A video presentation of the report said 74% of Hong Kong agencies used by the interviewees did not fully comply with four or more key standards.

The report said that 31% of those interviewed claimed the agencies did not tell them accurately the nature of their jobs in Hong Kong, including the terms and conditions of their employment and the high cost of securing it.

A video of the report said of the 18 agencies that charged placement fees, seven charged jobseekers $3,500 to $10,000, or 8 to 24 times the legal limit. Six agencies said they would charge applicants a deposit.

“I’m happy to find you a new employer, but you need to go to Macau. Wait for the visa. You need to pay $6,500,” a woman with a blurred face told a volunteer who posed as a job seeker.

Last year, the Labour Department successfully prosecuted 11 agencies for breaking the law and issued stern warnings to 19 others for non-compliance with the Code.

Gasing said many agencies know they can largely ignore the Code and continue to follow illegal business practices because they do not fear reprisals. The domestic workers, in turn, have no choice but to go along with the agencies.

The report also revealed that agencies continue to hold the passports of migrant workers. in violation of the law.

“Unless the Labour Department strengthens its monitoring and inspection systems, and effectively investigates and punishes non-compliant employment agencies, the Code of Practice will remain toothless and ineffectual in protecting the rights of migrant domestic workers,” Gasing said.

Sharon, may concert sa kanyang 40th anniversary

Sa pagdiriwang ng kanyang ika-40th anniversary sa showbiz, magkakaroon ng concert si Sharon  Cuneta sa Araneta Coliseum sa September 28. Ito raw ay para makaganti sa kabutihan at paghanga ng kanyang mga followers na walang sawang sumusuporta sa kanya. PIA, PABOR NA SA IBANG BANSA ANG MISS U 
Kamakailan ay ipinahayag ng bagong Department of Tourism (DOT) Sec. Berna Romulo-Puyat na hindi na matutuloy ang plano na muling i-host ng Pilipinas ang Miss Universe sa taong ito dahil sa laki ng budget. Naging kontrobersyal ang mga pinasukang proyekto ng DOT sa mga nakalipas na buwan sa pamumuno ng dating kalihim ng ahensya na si Wanda Tulfo-Teo kaya pinag-resign ito sa kanyang puwesto.

Pabor ang dating Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach, na kasalukuyan pa ring ambassador para sa Miss Universe Organization, na sa ibang bansa naman ganapin ang pinaka-popular na beauty pageant dahil tatlong beses na rin naman itong ginanap sa Pilipinas, - noong 1974, 1994 at 2017. May balita na pinagpipilian kung sa Macau o South Korea ito gaganapin sa taong ito. Ayon kay Pia, tiyak na magugustuhan ito ng mga Pinoy na kilalang masugid na tagasubaybay ng Miss U kung nagkataon, dahil parehong mas malapit ang dalawang lugar at madaling puntahan. Mas makakabuti rin daw para sa pambato ng Pilipinas na si Catriona Gray kung maraming Pinoy na manonood at susuporta sa kanya. Ayon pa kay Pia, malaki ang tsansa ni Catriona na manalo dahil “total package” daw ito, at walang anumang masasabing negatibong bagay sa kanya.

Ang plano ni Pia na magtrabaho sa Amerika ay hindi pa niya pwedeng gawin ngayon dahil marami pa raw siyang tinatapos na commitments at projects bilang Kapamilya. Pagkatapos ipalabas ang pelikulang “My Perfect You” na pinagtambalan nila ni Gerald Anderson, ay may gagawin pa uli siyang pelikula at TV show, bukod pa sa mga product endorsements niya. Hindi pinalad na mabuo ang kambal na ipinagbuntis ni Heart Evangelista ng tatlong buwan. Malungkot niyang ibinalita noong June 6 na hindi rin nabuhay ang pangalawa sa kambal, ilang linggo matapos na mawala ang una. Nakatakda siyang magbakasyon sa ibang bansa upang magpahinga at maka-recover, sa payo na rin ng kanyang asawang si Sen. Chiz Escudero.

NONOY AT WILLIE NEP, MAY CONCERT 
Matapos maratay ng mahigit isang taon dahil sa stroke, muling magbabalik sa entablado ang master impersonator na si Willie Nepomuceno para sa “Music and Laughter” concert niya, kasama ang beteranong mang-aawit na si Nonoy Zuniga, sa The Theatre in Solaire sa July 27.

Nagpapasalamat daw si Willie sa pagkakaroon niya ng panibagong buhay, pagkatapos niyang na-stroke. “Life must go on ...the show must go on. Magre-retire na rin sana ako, dahil for so many years para akong talent na ... waiting for the chance to be discovered, eh ang tagal, tagal ko na sa showbiz, so parang ayaw ko na. But ‘yung call ng audience na mayroon pa rin palang naniniwala, eh ‘di ituloy natin.”

Lumabo raw ang paningin niya, pero wala naman daw tumabingi sa kanya, gaya nangyayari sa iba.  “I was in bed for about one-and-a-half to two years. ... Tawag nila mild stroke but if that’s mild I don’t know what is more than that. Grabe, kulang na lang talaga sumigaw ako and say goodbye. Kaya lang ‘yung mga lyrics ng kanta nito (ni Nonoy Zuniga), how can I ever say goodbye.’ Natapos naman through constant therapy, pinagtiyagaan ko.”

Nakilala si Willie dahil sa panggagaya niya sa dating presidenteng sina Ferdinand Marcos, Fidel Ramos at Joseph Estrada, pero nagdesisyon daw siyang huwag gayahin si Pres. Duterte. “‘Yung traditional na nakikita niyo sa akin na political impression or satire, maybe hihiwalay muna ako doon from the meantime. I will try to reinvent myself. Kasi baka ano ang masabi ko. Mukhang ‘yung ginagawa ko noon hindi na as effective as before,” ang sabi pa ni Willie.

AIZA, MAGPAPA-OPERA 
Ipinahayag ni Aiza Seguerra, na kilala na ngayon bilang Ice Seguerra, na kasalukuyan siyang nasa transition period bilang paghahanda sa kanyang sexual reassignment surgery. Ito ay kanyang ibinunyag sa panayam sa kanya ni Boy Abunda sa “Tonight with Boy Abunda” show noong June 21. 

“Nung una nandun din ako sa parang why? bakit kailangan? pero alam mo Tito Boy, sometimes, especially nung nag come out na ako as trans, it’s so hard to wake up every day seeing that you’re in this body. Then alam mo yung pakiramdam na di naman eto dapat yun. Sinabi ko yun sa wife ko before. Kasi nung una parang di nya rin magets eh parang for her, ‘Tinatanggap naman kita eh, for me you’re a man.’ But it’s not about that. I mean I thank you for accepting me. but the problem is me accepting me,” ang sabi ni Ice.

Ipinaliwanag pa niya na sa transition period ay sumasailalim siya sa hormone replacement, kaya nag-aalala rin siya na baka mabago ang kanyang boses, lalo na at ang pag-awit ang kanyang trabaho upang matustusan ang pangangailangan ng kanyang pamilya. Masaya daw siya sa pagbubukas ng unang gender diversity center dahil may mga doktor siyang nakakausap tungkol dito.

Si Ice, na dating si Aiza Seguerra, ay unang umamin bilang isang transgender man noong August 2014.

Isa pang sikat na mang-aawit, si Charice Pempengco, na kilala na ngayon bilang si Jake Xyrus, ang suma-ilalim din sa hormone replacement. Bumaba na ang boses nito na parang nagbibinata, kaya malayung malayo na sa boses niyang hinangaan sa buong mundo noong siya pa si Charice. Pero patuloy pa rin siyang umaawit, at kamakailan ay nag-concert pa at may bagong album, dahil ang pag-awit lang din ang pwede niyang gawin upang matulungan ang pamilya. 

PAOLO, NAKIPAG-BREAK SA TEXT?
Usap-usapan ang pakikipag-break daw sa pamamagitan ng text message ni Paolo Ballesteros sa kanya umanong boyfriend na si Sebastian Castro na isang commercial model at indie actor. Ipinost ni Sebastian ang mensaheng natanggap niya mula sa pinangalanan niyang “Root Word”: “Hey good morning. Ive been thinking for the past few days about us.  Im sorry i have to break your heart again. im really sorry.  I dont want you to finish ur song for me and i cant be that person. Its too much for me i guess. i dont know what else to say, but im really sorry.”

Kinumpirma rin niya na nagkaroon siya ng three- month relationship sa taong hindi niya sinabi ang pangalan. “I have no intention of confirming or denying rumors about who I was dating. For my own peace of mind, I’ll just acknowledge it’s over. Call it practicality, but it’s simply easier to say so once publicly than over and over again when asked. I had a brief 3-month relationship. It didn’t work out.

Madramang pagpapaalam sa alaga

Pero isang taon pa lang si Olive sa bagong amo ay pinabalik na siya ng mga dating amo sa kanilang bahay sa Fortress Hill.

Katatapos pa lang niya ng panibagong kontrata sa kanila nang mahulog siya mula sa isang tuntungan at matumba, at kinailangang dalhin siya sa ospital. Doon ay nakita na may malubha siyang sakit sa matris, at kinailangang operahan agad.

Pagtapos ng operasyon ay may nakita namang bukol sa kanyang sikmura, at sinabihan siyang magpatingin muli para masigurong hindi malubha ang kanyang kundisyon. Na-homesick bigla

Malungkot ang malayo sa sariling anak. Ito ang isa sa mga dahilan kung bakit marami sa mga nanay na nasa ibang bansa ang na ho-homesick. Kabilang sa kanila si Rose, na kadarating lamang sa Hong Kong, at mabigat sa loob ang pag-iwan sa dalawang anak na apat at anim na taong gulang sa pangangalaga ng asawa. Naisipan niyang magtrabaho sa ibang bansa dahil hindi sapat ang kinikita ng asawa mula sa pinagtatrabahuang pabrika. 

Mabait naman ang kanyang mga amo at pati na ang apat na taon na bata na kanyang inaalagaan. Dahil sa bibo at magiliw ang bata ay nababawasan ang kanyang lungkot. Sinisikap niyang ituon ang isip sa trabaho at pinagbubuti niya ang kanyang pagsisilbi sa amo upang maiwasan ang ma homesick. Iniisip na lang din niya na anak niya ang batang inaalagaan upang maiwasan ang pag iisip ng husto sa mga anak.

Kamakailan, araw ng Linggo, paglabas ni Rose sa sala upang mag day off ay nadaanan niya na gising na ang kanyang alaga at naglalaro kasama ang nanay nito. Agad na lumapit ang bata sa kanya at yumakap, sabay sabi ng, “Happy Mother’s Day, auntie. I love you.” 

Napaiyak si Rose at niyakap rin ang alaga ng mahigpit. Nakiyakap na rin ang kanyang among babae dahil sa awa kay Rose na alam nitong lungkot na lungkot sa mga sandaling iyon dahil sa pangungulila sa mga anak. Sinabihan ng amo  ang anak nito na, “Tell auntie to stop crying.” Sinunod naman ito ng bata, at dinagdagan pa ng siya na lang daw muna ang anak ni Rose habang nagtratrabaho sa Hong Kong.

Kapag may pera na daw siya ay kukunin niya ang mga anak ni Rose para may kalaro siya. Natawa na lang si Rose at ang among babae sa sinabi ng alaga.

Si Rose ay tubong Laguna at anim na buwan pa lamang sa among Intsik na naninirahan sa Kowloon.

Kakaibang paraan ng kawanggawa

Mahilig sa negosyo at matulungin sa kapwa si Sheena. Ginagamit niya ang dalawang katangiang ito upang makatulong o makapag-ambag ng kahit na maliit na halaga sa mga grupo na may magandang layunin. Halimbawa, nagbebenta siya ng kahit anong pagkakitaan at sa bawat mabenta niya ay ibinibigay niya ang 5% ng kita sa mga kawanggawa.

Dahil sa kanyang kakaibang pamamaraan at mabuting layunin ay marami sa kanyang mga kaibigan ang bumibili ng kanyang paninda. Suki na niya ang mga kaibigan na gusto rin tumulong kahit na sa pamamagitan lamang ng pagtangkilik ng kanyang produkto. Mula sa kanyang mga naipon na pera ay nakapagbigay siya ng mga pagkain, gamot, alcohol, bulak at iba pang pangunahing pangangailangan ng Anawim, isang bahay-tuluyan ng mga matatanda.

Kasama ang kanyang dalawang anak na edad pito at lima ay dinalaw nila ang mga matatanda, at binigyan ng mga napamiling mga gamit. Tuwang-tuwa naman ang mga matatanda na nakipagsayaw pa sa kanyang mga anak, bilang bahagi ng isang maiksing programa na isinagawa ng mga namamahala sa Anawim upang higit na  maging makabuluhan ang kanilang pagdalaw.

Bukod sa Anawim, nakapagbigay na rin siya ng mga damit sa mga mahihirap sa Pilipinas, na galing sa mga kahon-kahong damit na naipon ng kanyang kaibigan mula sa bigay ng kani-kanilang mga amo. Sinagot ni Sheena ang bayad sa pagpapadala ng mga kahon sa Pilipinas at nakipagtulungan para maipamigay ang mga damit ng maayos. Ayon kay Sheena masarap sa pakiramdam ang tumulong. Hindi naman daw sagabal ang kawalan ng malaking kayamanan sa pagtulong dahil marami naman ibang paraan.

Si Sheena, 28 at tubong Maynila, at may asawa at dalawang anak. Nasa ikalawang kontrata na siya sa among Intsik na may isang anak at nakatira sa Kennedy Town.

Duterte’s ‘stupid God’ remark draws ire of religious leaders

It took President Rodrigo Duterte to describe God as “stupid” for the country’s religious leaders to speak up in almost unison against what one of them considered not only as blasphemous in the highest order but also as a violation of the Constitution.

Duterte, in his usual rambling remarks delivered in mixed English and Filipino in an event in Davao, called God “stupid” and questioned the logic of the allegorical Bible story of the temptation of Adam and Eve.

“Who is this stupid God? The son of a bitch is really stupid,” Duterte said, eliciting angry retorts in social media. It also sparked outrage in the predominantly Christian nation. 

Eddie Villanueva, founder of the Christian group Jesus is Lord Movement, said Duterte’s remark calling God stupid was a violation of the 1987 Constitution because the document “believes in God.”

“It’s very clear for the sake of argument, that is already a violation of the constitution because the very constitution, the soul of the Filipino people, believes in God,” he said.

Villanueva, who has in the past been generally supportive of the president, said that Duterte was “wittingly or unwittingly” violating the soul of the nation by disparaging God. He also labeled Duterte’s comments as “a kind of blasphemy in the highest order.”

The JIL founder and leader, whose son, Sen. Joel Villanueva, is part of the Duterte-aligned majority bloc in the Senate, said that he felt “holy anger” upon hearing the president’s remarks.

Despite the denunciations, Duterte stuck to his remarks on Monday but clarified that he was criticizing the God of Catholics. His spokespersons have justified the comments as freedom of expression and as a critique of Catholic teachings.

Duterte, who has in the past cursed Pope Francis and former US leader Barack Obama, also claimed that his God has common sense while that of his critics is stupid. He did not say which god he meant, but mentioned a “universal mind”.

While clarifying his “stupid God” remarks, Duterte lobbed another attack at Catholics, this time questioning the Lord’s Supper and why those who were with him became saints.

In the same speech, Duterte, who has been slammed for his demeaning remarks on women, said that creating the first woman, Eve, and was God’s “greatest mistake.”

Duterte’s daughter, Davao City Mayor Sarah Duterte, asked critics to ignore her father’s rants on the Bible, saying he is not a priest to be an expert on religion. She said people should judge Duterte based on his work as president and not on his “talkkalese.”

“Please do not listen to him interpret the Bible or Quran, he is not a priest, a pastor or an imam. He is the president, listen only when he speaks about his work,” she said in a statement on her social media account.

Carpio said that whatever the president said was his opinion and is protected by his constitutional right to freedom of speech and expression.

In an attempt to calm down angry criticisms, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque

Dismissed the religious leaders’ outrage over the remark a consequence of the “mutual dislike” between Duterte and the Catholic Church leaders who supposed a different candidate during the 2016 elections.

Roque also said the Catholic Church should be ready to receive criticisms since it had been slamming the president’s words and actions in the two years that he had been in office.

“What I said, let’s not be onion-skinned. It’s not possible for the Catholic Church to be the only one issuing criticisms and then when the president criticizes it seems they are unacceptable,” Roque said in Filipino, pointing to the pastoral letters and statements of bishops against the chief executive.

“Just like what I said, let’s be frank about this, both sides dislike each other. Let us just accept that the Catholic Church does not like President Duterte. Let’s not be coy about it,” Roque said.

Even then, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, the archbishop of Manila, called for calm amid the religious outcry against Duterte’s remark, saying the faithful should not be distracted from other pressing issues confronting the country.

“[L]et us not be distracted from addressing other pressing concerns with fervor of faith and love, for example, the increasing prices of goods, job security, exploitation of women and children, violence in homes and neighborhoods, different types of addictions, crimes, vulnerabilities of OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) the daily paralyzing traffic in big cities, flooding, reconstruction of destroyed cities, combating terrorism, corruption and others,” the soft-spoken cardinal said in a letter to priests on Wednesday.

“Be at peace. Be calm. Don’t let things disturb your inner peace. Let us read the situation with the eyes of faith,” said Tagle, who was in Geneva for a UN conference on migrants and refugees.

Filipina seeks High Court nod for tech court to hear Tribunal case

A Filipina who has left an unfinished claim against her former employer in the Labour Tribunal, is appealing in the High Court the tribunal’s rejection of her application to use a “technology court” to pursue her case from the Philippines.

A favorable decision by the High Court could pave the way for other foreign domestic workers who have gone home  to pursue their cases against their empoyers in Hong Kong by “appearing in court” electronically via video-conferencing.

The landmark appeal was heard on Jun 22 with the Help for Domestic Workers appearing on behalf of former worker Joenalyn Mallorca, who had gone home after her initial victory in the tribunal against her employer Ng Me Shuen.

Justice Carlye Chu who presided over the hearing, told the applicant’s lawyer that she will release her judgment after studying the implications of holding of such a special hearing.

The judge said the applicant must satisfy the court about the inability of the worker to return to Hong Kong to pursue her case.

The lawyer said Mallorca had to go home because her mother, who was looking after her three children, was afflicted with blood cancer and was in hospital. Another reason was her lack of financial ability to return to Hong Kong because she had no income.

Judge Chu said the Tribunal is looking to the High Court for guidance on setting up a technology court for Mallorca’s case because of related issues, such as how to ensure no lawyers are advising or preparing documents for the litigant overseas, and where to set up a technology court.

But the Labour Tribunal, which is housed in an old building in Yau Ma Tei, has no such special court.

The lawyer told Judge Chu that setting up a technology court would be less expensive than bringing back a domestic worker to give evidence in Hong Kong.

Ng terminated Mallorca’s work contract on Sept 15, 2016, just three months after the Filipina started working for her. The worker took her case to the Labour Tribunal after a meeting with Ng at the Labor Department failed.

The lawyer said Mallorca went home in December 2016. That was shortly after Ng paid the worker arrears in wages totaling $1,824.37 and $1,300 for her one-way airline ticket in a settlement in the Tribunal.

But four unsettled items totaling $8,707.33 remain in Mallorca’s claim, including wages in lieu of notice. These would have been taken up in a second hearing scheduled for Feb 2, 2017, but she could not return and authorized Help to represent her.

Help case manager Raquel Amador told The SUN the appeal is very important because, if granted, many foreign domestic workers who have returned home can still pursue their cases against their employers.

The Judiciary set up in 2015 a technology court in the High Court in Admiralty. It is equipped with user-friendly features and facilities, including video conferencing, multimedia presentation of evidence, a documentation and exhibits handling system, and interpretation services all integrated into a centrally controlled network.

A Filipino professional boxer earlier reported as having mauled a compatriot during a brawl in Central says he’s been threatened by unknown men because of the “fake news.”

Jay Primo Solmiano claims he has been keeping a low profile since TV reports in the Philippines of the Jun 17 incident had accused him of using his superior might to beat up Filipino driver Ricky Lizo.

“Dahil doon napeligro buhay ko kasi madami naghahanting sa akin na mga Pinoy,” Solmiano said. “Pati asawa ko nabantaan dahil sa fake news na iyon.”

Solmiano said a group of Filipino men even dropped by his place of work and hinted to the office receptionist that they were there to avenge the beating of Ricky and his brother, Denise Lizo.

The boxer insisted he merely tried to pacify the Lizos who had ganged up on his friend, muay thai instructor and Hong Kong resident Sebastian Chancell Wong. 

After news spread that he had gone into hiding after the brawl, Solmiano said he went to the Central police station to clear his name, but was told that there was no case lodged against him.

Instead, the police arrested Wong and the Lizos on a charge of fighting in a public place, and were allowed bail pending further investigations.

In addition, Wong, 38, was booked for assaulting a police officer.

He and Ricky, 50, and Denise, 47, both family drivers, were all taken to Queen Mary Hospital in Pokfulam after police were called in.

A statement from the Police Public Relations Bureau issued on Jun 20 stated:
”Police received a report on June 17 that several men were fighting at D’Aguilar Street in Central.  Police arrived at scene and arrested one local and two NEC (non-ethnic Chinese) males aged between 38 and 50. During the course of arrest, a local male assaulted a police officer leading to injury on his wrist.

The case is classified as “fighting in a public place” and “assaulting a police officer”.  All the arrested persons have been released on Police bail and required to report back in late July. The case is being investigated by the District Investigation Team 5 of Central District.”

Pictures of the Lizos and Wong, with their faces all bloodied and their eyes puffy from the beating, circulated on social media shortly after video footages taken during the actual fighting were posted online.

In several interviews, Ricky Lizo had claimed the trouble started when they told Wong off for slapping his Filipina companion at the corner of D’Aguilar and Stanley streets in Central.

Ricky said he hit Wong on the head with a beer bottle after the muay thai fighter took a swipe at his brother.

The elder Lizo claimed Solmiano had felled him with one punch when he saw his friend Wong being attacked.

But in a separate interview on Philippine TV, Wong denied hitting his woman companion, saying he was just pacifying her because she was drunk and was out of control. 

Wong said the Lizos had attacked him first, and Solmiano who had tried to pacify them at first, only came to his rescue after he was badly injured by the broken bottle.

Wong’s friends posted pictures of his stitched broken lip and head wounds to prove that he was himself badly wounded from the scuffle.

Wong and Denise Lizo were discharged from the hospital after two days, while Ricky had to stay for another day. Despite being allowed to go home, Ricky said he is due to return to the hospital early next month for surgery on his broken nose. He has also been told to rest for a few days before going back to work.

A Filipina domestic helper has appealed for help in locating a compatriot who was caught on CCTV while apparently taking off with her handbag from a shop in Central the other Sunday, Jun 17.

Milagros A. Galvan, 49, said all her important documents were in her purple-colored bag, including her passport, HK ID card and employment contract, apart from $2,000 cash, some coins, a bunch of keys, bank passbook, octopus card, and a power bank.

She said she had all her documents with her as she needed them to update her records with Metrobank.

“Hindi naman niya kailangan ang mga dokumento ko, bakit niya kinuha? Sana ibalik niya sa Philippine Consulate. Kahit kunin na niya ang pera kung kailangan niya,” Galvan said.

Galvan says she just wants her documents back

The alleged theft happened between 6:20-6:30pm on Jun 17 in a ground-floor shop in Eurotrade Centre on 21-23 Des Voeux Road Central. Galvan she momentarily placed her bag on a clothes rack so she could take out her phone and read messages on what she was supposed to buy there for her child, but found it gone the next time she looked.

“Ang bilis,” she said in a message.

Galvan said that the shopkeeper helped her look for her bag, but when they couldn’t find it, checked the store’s CCTV camera. There they saw another Filipina-looking woman in a blue shirt discreetly putting Galvan’s bag strap around her wrist, before quickly moving away.

Galvan immediately reported the theft to the Central Police station, and showed them the footage from the shop’s CCTV. The police reportedly told her to wait a week for an update but she had yet to receive a call from them.

Galvan, who lives in Yuen Long and has been working in Hong Kong for 24 years, said she just wants her documents back as it will take time to replace them all, and she has difficulty moving around without them.

Cebu's disabled paddlers win anew in HK Dragonboat race

PADS is no 1 for the second consecutive year

Paddlers of Cebu-based PADS Adaptive  Dragonboat Racing Team retained their crown in the paradragon event of the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival on Jun 24 by handily defeating the competition in the 400-meter championship race.

Another team of Filipino men and women, Triton, won a gold trophy by ruling the women’s 400-meter race on Jun 22, then snared a silver trophy in the 200-meter women’s event of the three-day festival on Victoria Harbour in Central.

To loud cheers of “Pilipinas! Pilipinas!” and “Go! Go! PADS!” from OFW fans on the promenade on Sunday, defending champions PADS charged ahead at the boom of the cannon and progressively left its five challengers behind as it raced to the finish line.

The victory won a large gold trophy and a bunch of gold medals for the physically challenged men and women of PADS.

Yas San Kam Ying took second place and NAAC Top Brilliance finished third.

“I’m overjoyed. We did it again. Once more, we have proved the capability of the Filipino,” said coach and drummer Christian Ian Sy as he waded through the crowd of screaming and flag-waving fans who pressed towards the paddlers.

Minutes later, members of the team posed with bevies of tearful Filipinas and a few locals who shared the pride and joy of the hardy bunch who overcame their disabilities to become champions in one of the events of the annual dragon boat festival.

Consul Paulo Saret, who was present at the awarding ceremony, also beamed with pride at the achievement of PADS.

“Last year, they came here without support and won. Now they came back and they won again,” the diplomat told The SUN when asked to comment.

“Physical disability is not a hindrance to success. But they need the all-out support of our kababayans, and the PCG is always there to give our all-out support as long as we are informed in advance,” he said.

This year, PADS came to Hong Kong with a bigger contingent of 44 paddlers and four coaches as the team has expanded, manager JP Ecarma told The SUN. Last year, there were only 33. He was on hand to assemble his paddlers at Pier 9 for their semifinal race at 11:10am.

He said the team had prepared for three months for the event, initially training four times a week and then doing it every day as the tournament neared.

The team was also better off now than last year, when members had to scrounge for plane tickets and pocket money. Now it has a few corporate sponsors such as IMG and Alaxan, which sent their own media teams to document PADS’ glory quest.

This year, PADS surprised everyone when it competed in the heats on Jun 23 and finished in the top five to qualify for Sunday’s International Open Championship. The team, however, failed to win a place in the final.

Meanwhile, Triton bested five other teams from Hong Kong, China, Japan, India and New York in the 400 meters race to capture the International Women’s Championship.

It also took silver in the small boat category of that event.

Triton also competed in the International Mixed Championship 200-meter small boat event on Sunday afternoon, but its boat was struck by Hubbis Stormy Dragon’s when the Hong Kong team suddenly veered left from Lane 2.

Antonette Suyao, Triton manager, said her team had to slow down, causing it to lose time. She protested the incident with the organizing committee and, after reviewing a TV footage, the panel disqualified Stormy Dragon.

But she said the committee refused to let the team do a time trial race.

Ilegal ang gawain niya

Si M.J. na isang Ilongga, 42 taong gulang at dalaga ay nahuli ng Immigration noong Mayo 3 habang nagbabantay sa kaha ng isang spa sa Hunghom na pag-aari ng amo niya.

Matagal na sigurong sinusubaybayan  ng mga autoridad ang shop bago ito pinasok at hinuli siya kasama ang apat na Thai na masahista. Na-deport yung mga Thai pero ipinaglaban ng amo ang kaso ni M.J. marahil ay nangangamba ito na masasabit din, depende sa sasabihin ng Pilipina.

Isang kaibigan ni M.J. ang nagsubok na kamustahin siya dahil nanghihingi ng tulong ang pamilya nito sa Iloilo, pero ayaw magsalita ng amo, at ang sabi ay may abugado nang humahawak sa kaso nila. Kaya ganoon na lang ang gulat nung kaibigan ni M.J. nang malaman na nakakulong ito sa Lowu Correctional For Women. Nasentensiyahan na pala siya ng hanggang apat na buwang pagkakulong magmula nang mahuli siya noong Mayo 3. Hindi na siya pinalabas at pinayagang magpiyansa habang dinidinig ang kanyang kaso.

Tinawagan ng kaibigan iyong kulungan sa Lowu at ang sabi sa kanya ay wala na doon si M.J. at kinuha ng Immigration para kunan muli ng pahayag, pero hindi daw nila alam kung saan na siya dinala. Kasalukuyan ngayong nakikipag-ugnayan ang kaibigan sa assistance to nationals section ng Konsulado para malaman kung nasaan na si M.J. at para mabigyan din ng tulong kung sakali.

Itinanong din ng kaibigan kung walang matatanggap na long service pay si M.J. dahil 15 taon itong nagsilbi sa amo, pero ang sabi sa kanya ay malabo dahil ilegal ang trabaho niya.

Matagal nang pinagsasabihan si M.J. ng kanyang mga kaibigan na itigil na ang pagtatrabaho sa spa dahil delikado. Wala din namang ekstra na sahod ang binibigay sa kanya ng amo, at alam nilang pareho na ayon sa kanilang kontrata ay sa bahay dapat nagtatrabaho si M.J.

Ayon pa sa kuwento ng mga kaibigan niya, may isang Thai na trabahador sa spa na biglang pinaalis ng amo at nagbabala ito na magsusumbong sa mga awtoridad. Malamang ay iyon ang nagsuplong. Dapat ay noon pa lang daw ay tumigil na si M.J. sa kanyang ilegal na trabaho at hindi na hinintay na mahuli pa siya at makulong. Kasalanan din naman niya ang nangyari, ang sabi pa nila.

Karanasan ng nag-overstay: TNT ng 19 taon

May 19 taon nang naninirahan ng ilegal sa Hong Kong si M.L., tubong Bisaya at 45 taong gulang nang makumbinsi siyang sumuko. Nakatagal siya dito dahil may mabait na mag-asawang kumupkop sa kanya at binayaran siya ng tama kaya napatapos niya sa pag-aaral ang tatlong kapatid. Sa tagal ng panahon na lagi siyang nagtatago sa maykapangyarihan ay napagod na siya, kaya gusto na niyang sumuko para makauwi na at makapiling ang pamilya. Ang tanging inaalala niya ang mag-asawang itinuring siyang parang isang kaanak.

Taong 1997 nang dumating siya dito para magkatulong na walang hangad kundi ang matulungan ang pamilya na makaahon sa hirap. Nakatapos ng high school si M.L. pero hindi na nagkolehiyo sa kagustuhang mag abroad at kumita agad ng malaki. Iniwan nya ang trabaho sa Pilipinas na may maliit na sahod. Umabot sa P50,000 ang nagastos ni M.L. bago makarating ng HK at binawas unti-unti sa kanyang suweldo kaya halos wala siyang kinita sa kanyang unang kontrata.

Sa pangalawang kontrata, na terminate siya ng amo pagkatapos ng tatlong buwang pagtatrabaho sa hindi niya malamang dahilan. Binayaran naman siya ng amo at tumira siya sa isang boarding house habang naghahanap ng bagong employer. Sa kasamaang palad may nagnakaw ng kanyang pasaporte at pera doon. Isa sa kanyang mga kasamahan doon ang nagyaya sa kanya sa parke, at pagbalik niya ay wala na ang kanyang mga gamit.

Balak daw niya noon na mag report sa Konsulado para makakuha ng bagong dokumento, pero may apat siyang kasamahan sa boarding house na TNT (tago nang tago), na nagyaya sa kanya na manatili na lang sa Hong Kong ng walang pahintulot katulad nila.

Sa unang dalawang taon niya bilang overstayer sa Hong Kong, nagpalipat-lipat siya ng boarding house at tumanggap ng trabahong ilegal para lang may maipadala sa pamilya sa Pilipinas. Tiniis niyang hindi makalabas ng Hong Kong para hindi maputol ang kanyang sustento sa pamilya.

Suwerte naman na pagkatapos noon ay may nakilala si M. L. na mag asawang Intsik na may anak na nag-aaral sa Canada, at kinuha siya ng mga ito bilang regular na parttime.

Dalawang beses sa isang linggo kung magtrabaho siya sa kanila noon, at agad na naging magaan ang loob ng mag-asawa sa kanya at itinuring sya na parang anak, siguro dahil malayo ang kanilang nag iisang anak at kailangan din nila ng kausap at kasama sa bahay.

Hindi naglaon ay kinausap ng mag asawa si M. L. na kung pwede ay sa kanila na siya magtrabaho at babayaran siya ng tamang sahod kahit wala silang kontrata dahil alam ng mag-asawa na ilegal siya sa Hong Kong. Dahil sa kanilang kabaitan ay nakapagpadala ng regular si M. L. sa pamilya sa Pilipinas sa pamamagitan ng isang kaibigan.

Sa panahon ng kanyang pagsisilbi sa mag-asawang mabait ay namuhay na parang regular na kasambahay si M.L. Namamalengke siya at bumibisita sa mga kaibigan, at lumalabas at nagpa-party kasama ang mag-asawa, bagamat lagi silang nag-iingat na wala silang makakasalamuhang pulis.

Sa pagdaan ng mga panahon ay tanging si M. L. na lang ang natirang TNT sa kanilang magkaibigan sa dating boarding house dahil ang iba ay nahuli, nakulong at nakauwi na sa Pilipinas. Dahil sa mga kaibigan, nalaman ni M. L. ang mga lugar na pinagdadalhan sa mga nahuhuli, saan sila kinukulong, ano ang pwedeng dalhin sa loob, at ano ang ginagawa nila habang sila ay nakakulong. Pasikreto niyang pinuntahan ang lahat na mga lugar para daw alam na niya ang mangyayari sakaling sumuko na siya.

Nang makapagtapos ang kanyang mga kapatid ay lalong sumidhi ang pakiusap ng mga ito na sumuko na si M.L. para mapanatag na ang kanyang kalooban at dahil kaya na nila siyang bigyan ng magandang buhay kapalit ng kanyang pagpapakasakit para sa kanila. Ang tanging pumipigil kay M.L. dati ay ang mag-asawa na kumupkop sa kanya at itinuring siyang parang pamilya.

Napadali lang ang desisyon niyang umuwi na sa Pilipinas nang biglang makaramdam ng sakit si M.L. na ikinatakot niya. Walang tigil ang ubo niya at paninikip ng dibdib at kahit gusto niyang magpatingin sa doktor ay hindi niya magawa dahil sa kanyang kalagayan bilang overstayer. Ayaw niyang bigyan pa ng problema ang mga amo kaya humingi siya ng tulong sa isang kapwa Pilipina na nakikilala niya lang sa Facebook at alam niyang tumutulong sa mga OFW. Pumayag naman ang kapwa na Pilipina na samahan siyang magpatingin, bagamat pinayuhan din siya nito na sumuko na. Sa araw ng kanilang pagkikita ay parang himala na nawala ang lahat ng kanyang sakit. Dito naisip ni M.L. na panahon na nga siguro para siya ay sumuko. Nagkasundo sila na lumapit sa Konsulado para matulungan siyang sumuko, at baka sakaling mapagaan din ang kanyang parusa. Sinamahan si ML ng bagong kaibigan hanggang sa General Investigation Section ng Immigration sa Kowloon Bay kaya hindi siya masyadong kinabahan.

Nang magkita silang muli pagkatapos makulong si M.L. ng dalawang linggo ay masaya nitong ibinalita na malamang na makalabas na siya at makauwi sa Disyembre para makasama na muli ang pamilya. Malaya na rin siyang patuloy na makipagtalastasan sa mag-asawang kumupkop sa kanya, kahit sa pamamagitan lang ng FB.

Payo ni ML sa mga kapwa OFW, huwag hayaang maging ilegal ang kanilang pananatili sa Hong Kong dahil may mga paraan naman para sila makapanatili dito na hindi kakakaba-kaba at laging tago nang tago. Iba pa rin ang pakiramdam ng isang malaya.

Dinuraan ng kolektor

Si Althea, tubong Bisaya, ay 37 taong gulang pa lang ngunit biyuda na. Binangungot ang kanyang asawa wala pang isang taon ang nakakaraan kaya dumaan siya sa malaking pagsubok. Bukod sa tatlo ang anak nilang naiwan na walang tatay ay gumastos pa si Althea ng malaki para sa pagpapalibing sa asawa.

Dahil dito ay dalawang buwan na palaging kulang ang perang naihuhulog niya para sa kanyang utang sa isang financial company.

 Hindi naglaon ay tinatawagan na siya ng kolektor, noong una ay nakikiusap, pero nitong Hunyo 11 ay inakyat na siya sa bahay ng kanyang amo at dinuro-duro sa mukha. Hindi pa siya nakuntento, at biglang dinuraan sa mukha si Althea, mabuti ay nakailag siya kaya hindi siya tinamaan sa mukha.

Bago umalis ay binalaan pa siya ng kolektor na babalikan siya sa gabi para kausapin ang kanyang amo.

Nanginginig at maiyak-iyak na tumawag siya sa isang kaibigan para manghingi ng tulong. Tinulungan naman siya nito na pumunta sa assistance to nationals section ng Konsulado at doon ay pinayuhan siya na isumbong sa pulis ang ginawa ng kolektor.

Kapag bumalik daw pang muli ang kolektor ay bumalik siya sa ATN para magawaan ng sulat na ipapadala sa asosasyon ng mga financing company dito para ireklamo ang kumontrata sa bastos na kolektor.

Batid ni Althea na marami nang mga katulong ang nawalan ng trabaho dahil sa mga salbaheng kolektor ng mga pautangan. Naging leksyon daw sa kanya ang nangyari. Ngayon ay tinatantiya niya kung ano ang balak gawin ng kanyang mga amo na binulabog ng kolektor. Alam niya na maaring hindi na siya muling pirmahan ng kontrata pero handa na raw siya dahil may nakita na siyang amo na maari nyang lipatan, doon din sa North Point kung saan nakatira ang kasalukuyan niyang amo. – Merly Bunda

Making siomai and kutsinta

Around 200 Filipina domestic workers joined a free siomai and kutsinta making session held on Jun 10 at Bayanihan Centre in Kennedy Town, as part of the livelihood training program by Card Hong Kong Foundation.
The workshop was conducted by Card trainors Emilia L. Dellosa, Madelia S. Galve, Joan Cabodil and Rechel Montoya. They told the participants that siomai and kutsinta are among the easiest delicacies to make, and could be a good source of income for them when they go back home to the Philippines.
At first, the participants had difficulty forming the siomai, but they were smiling in no time once they got the hang of doing it.
Siomai and kutsinta are among a number of easy-to-make delicacies for which training is offered by Card Hong Kong. We are sharing the simple recipes for them here.

Siomai 

Ingredients:
2 1/2 lbs ground pork
1 cup shrimp-minced
2 cups water chestnuts or turnip, minced
5 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp ground black pepper
1 cup onion or shallots, minced
1 cup carrots, minced
1 1/2 cups white mushroom, minced
1 pack wonton wrapper (recipe is below if you can’t get them from the grocery)
1/4 cup spring onions, minced
2 tsp salt
1 raw egg
water for steaming

Procedure:
1. Combine all the ingredients except for the water and wonton wrapper, and mix thoroughly.
2. Wrap the mixed ingredients in the wonton wrapper.
3. Using a steamer, steam the wrapped siomai for 15 to 25 minutes. The time depends on the size of each individual piece (larger size means more time for steaming)
4. Serve hot with soy sauce and calamansi or lemon dip. Share and enjoy.
(Recipe yields 100 pieces of siomai).

Siomai or wonton wrapper

Ingredients:
2 cups flour
1 egg
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup water

Procedure:
1. Sift the the flour and salt in a mixing bowl and make a well at the center.
2. Put the egg and water into the well and mix together, then knead well until the mixture becomes firm but not sticky.
3. Let it rest for 45 minutes to allow the gluten to relax, making the dough easier to roll out.
4. Sprinkle cornstarch or flour on the space where you will knead the dough. After 45 minutes, divide the gough into halves, then use a rolling pin to knead the dough, then flatten it as thin as you can to make the siomai wrapper. While still working on the first half cover the other half to avoid from drying.
5. Trim the sides to make a big square or rectangle, then cut into siomai wrappers.

Kutsinta

Ingredients:
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/8 cup +1 tbsp tapioca flour
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup water
1 tsp lye water
1 tsp annatto/ achuete powder for coloring

Procedure:
1. Slightly grease your kutsinta molds with oil and set aside.
2. In a bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, tapioca flour and sugar.
3. Add in the water and stir until sugar is dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
4. Add the annatto/achuete powder and mix well. Then stir in the lye water.
5. Fill the molds about 3 quarters (3/4)full and steam for 40 minutes or until the top is set when touched.
6. Remove from heat and allow to cool before removing from the molds.
7. Serve with grated coconut.

Three Pinoys in Central brawl arrested for fighting in public, allowed to post bail

Three men – two Filipino drivers and a Chinese-Filipino muay thai instructor - who figured in a much-publicized brawl in Central on Jun 17 (Sunday) night have been arrested for fighting in public and told to report back to the police in late July.

In addition, Sebastian Chancell Wong, 38, the muay thai fighter and Hong Kong resident who speaks fluent Filipino, was booked for assaulting a police officer.

He and brothers Enrique “Ricky” Lizo, 50, and Denise Lizo,  47, both family drivers; were allowed to post police bail while they all recuperated from their wounds in Queen Mary Hospital in Pokfulam where they were taken shortly after the melee. They reported back to the police yesterday, after being discharged from hospital.

A statement from the Police Public Relations Bureau issued earlier today (Jun 20), stated:
”Police received a report on June 17 that several men were fighting at D’Aguilar Street in Central.  Police arrived at scene and arrested one local and two NEC (non-ethnic Chinese) males aged between 38 and 50. During the course of arrest, a local male assaulted a police officer leading to injury on his wrist.

The case is classified as “fighting in a public place” and “assaulting a police officer”.  All the arrested persons have been released on Police bail and required to report back in late July. The case is being investigated by the District Investigation Team 5 of Central District.”

A fourth person tagged by the Lizos as the one who mauled Ricky - professional Filipino boxer Jay Primo Solmiano - was not arrested. Despite this, Solmiano apparently reported to the Central Police station on Wednesday, Jun 20, to clear his name, after being accused in some reports as having gone into hiding.

Wong posted a picture on Facebook of Solmiano and himself outside the police station, saying it was meant to dispute reports that his friend Jay was in hiding.

Pictures of the Lizos and Wong, with their faces all bloodied and their eyes puffy from the beating, circulated on social media shortly after video footages taken during the actual fighting were posted online.

According to Ricky, who said he and his brother have both been working as family drivers in Hong Kong for about 11 years, the trouble started when they saw Wong slap a Filipina companion along D’Aguilar Street, near Stanley Street.

“Sinampal ni Sebastian yung babae. Sabi ko huwag mo saktan yung babae please…umupo na yung babae.. nag-iiyak.. Bigla nya sinugod brother ko.. nagulat ako.. eh may hawak akong bote.. pinalo ko sa ulo.. kasi alam kong muay thai fighter sya,” said Ricky in a chat message.

Ricky said the bottle came from a Filipino-owned pub they had just left. He also said Wong’s group had come from the same pub but were told to leave earlier after figuring in another fight.

His heftier brother reportedly helped stop Wong by elbowing him on the mouth, but the fighter retaliated by hitting Denise with a belt buckle.

Solmiano, who was initially seen in videos trying to stop the fight, ended up hitting Ricky to defend Wong, leaving the driver black and blue, his lips busted, and with his nose bloodied and apparently broken.

But in a separate interview with a Philippine TV news station, Wong denied that he had hit his woman companion. He said the woman was drunk and was out of control so he tried to pacify her by holding her by the hand.

Wong said Ricky must have misinterpreted his actions, but instead of asking what was going on, the driver who was apparently drunk, hit him on the head with a beer bottle. Solmiano went to his rescue when the driver allegedly hit him again with the broken bottle.

Wong’s friends posted pictures of his stitched broken lip and head wounds to prove that he was himself badly wounded from the scuffle.

Wong and Denise Lizo were discharged from the hospital after two days, while Ricky had to stay for another day. Despite being allowed to go home, Ricky said he is due to return to the hospital early next month for surgery on his broken nose. He has also been told to rest for a few days before going back to work.

Solmiano, who had posted an apology on his Facebook page for his involvement in the brawl, has since deactivated his account. He has declined all requests for an interview.
