The accused policewoman was charged in Kwun Tong court today

A Hong Kong policewoman was charged with 12 counts of assault and one count of theft in Kwun Tong Court today, Sept 27, for allegedly attacking her 47-year-old Indonesian domestic helper in June and July this year.

The 43-year-old defendant, So Po-yee appeared before Magistrate Bina Chainrai this morning. Earlier reports said she has been suspended from the force pending a resolution of the case.

So was charged with assaulting the helper, named Choiriyah, 10 times in a unit in Yau Mei Court, Lei Yue Mun Road, Kwun Tong from Jun 23 to Jul 2, and again, on Jun 19 and Jul 4. The attacks allegedly caused physical injuries to Choiriyah, including her mouth.

The defendant was also charged with stealing the helper’s Samsung mobile phone in the same unit on Jun 19. In all, she faces 10 counts of common assault, two counts of assault causing bodily injury, and one count of theft.

No plea was taken from her, and the case was adjourned until Nov 22. The court was told the defendant plans to hire a private lawyer.

The magistrate extended the defendant’s $500 bail until the next hearing and ordered her to stay at her given address and not to contact the prosecution witnesses.

The alleged victim, meanwhile, has taken refuge in a shelter run by a non-government organization after fleeing the employer’s house.

The helper sought treatment at Queen Mary Hospital after the alleged attacks

Reports earlier today said the defendant and the helper had a dispute that led to the former attacking the latter with her hand, causing her injuries. The helper went to Queen Mary Hospital afterwards for medical treatment.

The reports also said a preliminary investigation by the police found out that the employer had repeatedly assaulted the Indonesian woman at home and confiscated her mobile phone.

Police arrested the female police officer on Jul 6 for suspected “assault causing actual bodily harm," and was subsequently suspended from work.

The case was handed over to the Regional Crime Squad of East Kowloon for follow-up, and the mobile phone confiscated from the helper was recovered.

In the reports, the police said they attach great importance to the conduct of police officers. Any police officer who commits illegal acts will not be tolerated by the police.
