Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac led the guests at the closing of the OWWA Cup: Ang Liga ng OFW, held at Southorn Stadium in Wan Chai yesterday, Aug. 30.

The competition in basketball and volleyball was meant to celebrate the unity, sportsmanship and community spirit of overseas Filipino workers in Hong Kong. It was held a day before National Heroes’ Day was celebrated in the Philippines.

In his speech, Secretary Cacdac highlighted the importance of unity among OFWs, as well as their contributions as the country’s modern-day heroes.

PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE

Eto po talaga ang gusto ng mahal nating Pangulong Marcos – na magsama-sama tayo para ipagdiwang ang inyong pagiging bayani para sa National Heroes Day,” Secretary Cacdac said.

(This is what President Marcos really wants – that we all get together to celebrate your being heroes on National Heroes Day).

Cacdac says it's a good time to honor the country's modern-day heroes

Also among the guests were OWWA Administrator Patricia Yvonne M. Caunan and other key officers of the Department of Migrant Workers and the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong.

Labor Attache Cesar Chavez, Jr. said in his welcome remarks that taking part in sports is a good way for OFWs to recharge after working indoors the rest of the week.

Professional basketball player Calvin Abueva and volleyball player Abigail Maraño were also around, and even took part in exhibition matches, to symbolize the spirit of sportsmanship and unity.

The winning team in men's basketball

Taking the crown for men’s basketball was the visiting team from Macau, while their counterpart team in the women’s division for volleyball also took the top spot in the exhibition game.

The day-long activities went on until early evening that some of the participants in the best muse competition were unable to stay on because of their employer’s “curfew”.

We will update the list of winners as they are supplied officially.
